Southwestern Newfoundland 
Regional Workshop, Oct. 26

This regional workshop is a unique opportunity to come together with Memorial University community members and regional stakeholders to brainstorm ideas and solutions for your region - social and economic. 

There will be a Memorial Presents public forum the evening of Tuesday, October 25 followed by a day-long workshop on Wednesday,  October 26, 2016 in Stephenville.

Newfoundland and Labrador's Vital Signs Report
2016 Report Available Online

In this edition of Vital Signs, you’ll find all kinds of interesting charts and graphics, but also many stories. You’ll learn what a Mental Health Association regional office re-opening means for inmates of the West Coast Correctional Centre, and how a family of newcomers from Syria are settling in to their new home in Gander. 

A partnership between the Community Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Harris Centre, Vital Signs is an illustrated, cross-province look at the state of life in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Funding Opportunities

The Harris Centre – MMSB Waste Management Applied Research Fund

Do you have a project that could address NL's solid waste management challenges? We have funding to help you! Open to all faculty, students and staff at Memorial, the Harris Centre - MMSB Waste Management Applied Research Fund provides up to $15,000 per project/per year to investigate waste management issues in Newfoundland and Labrador. The deadline is November 10, 2016 and more information can be found here.

David Curran Award for Memorial University Undergraduate Students

This scholarship was established by the Harris Centre, Newfoundland and Labrador Regional Economic Development Association, and Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador in recognition of David Curran, a passionate advocate and tireless champion of rural Newfoundland.

The award will recognize one Memorial University undergraduate student who embodies that same spirit of community development innovation. The deadline is October 28, 2016 and more details about the scholarship can be found here.

Semester in Dialogue -
Information and Consultation Sessions

The feasibility study for the proposed Semester in Dialogue program is well underway, as the study team has begun their jurisdictional review and environmental scan. The initial information and consultation session took place Tuesday, October 4, and saw a rich discussion with a great deal of valuable input from members of the university and the community alike, all of which will be recognized in the final report. The team will be visiting the west coast for workshops and consultations at the end of the month, spending October 24-25 in Corner Brook and October 27-28 in Happy Valley-Goose Bay— be sure to look out for further information soon!

Event Design for Long-term Change

Save the date: Event Design workshop on November 1, 2016

What is the role of emotional knowledge in event design and strategic planning? Harris Centre staff Taylor Stocks will deliver a workshop on embodied emotional knowledge in event design. Without acknowledging this key piece, strategic planning initiatives can fall apart before they begin. This workshop will explore how to integrate the emotional with the rational.

The Lifelong Impacts of Adverse Experiences in the Early Years

On June 1, 150 people from academia, government, community, and civil society came together for a half-day workshop, The Lifelong Impacts of Adverse Experiences in the Early Years. Participants worked together to identify priority issues, key stakeholders, and possible solutions.

This summary report of those conversations will help guide those from the workshop who have opted to sit on a working group begin meaningful action addressing the needs of the community. A Framework for Better Understanding Drinking Water Quality in Happy Valley-Goose Bay

Drinking water must not only be safe, but also palatable and aesthetically acceptable for human consumption. This research was undertaken in response to concerns raised by residents in the Valley area of Happy Valley-Goose Bay about drinking water quality.

Funded by the Harris Centre - RBC Water Research and Outreach Fund, the goal of this project is to assist the municipality in providing safe and aesthetically pleasing water for consumers.
