Upcoming Events
Webinar: Remote Control - Lessons in Governance as a Resource for Rural and Remote Regions
Thursday, February 4 (12:30pm NST)

Join the Harris Centre's Dr. Rob Greenwood as he presents a webinar on behalf of the Rural Policy Learning Commons.

The globalization process offers potential for rural individuals and groups but does not guarantee it. It is critical to understand how the ‘local’ can be mobilized for maximal benefit and the role local governance assumes in achieving these benefits. How can local capacity be developed? What are likely to be the most important agents? What role do local governments, and governance in general, play? How can isolation, smallness and marginality in an increasingly global world be advantageous?

Synergy Session: The Problem with Pesticides
Friday, February 12 (12:00 pm to 1:30 pm NST)

Pesticides – insecticides, herbicides and fungicides – have played a role in expanding agricultural production for seventy years. Although there are benefits to the use of pesticides, there are also drawbacks, such as toxicity to humans and other animals. What is the situation regarding pesticides in Newfoundland and Labrador? What alternatives are there to pesticide use that might have less impact on health and agriculture? Are new policies needed to establish a better balance between the use of pesticides and their negative impacts on populations and crops?
