Rector's Reflections

The Righteous Live by Faith

Faith is the theme for Sunday's readings (see below), but not just any faith. It is a life-transforming faith, one that demonstrates the very presence of God moving, alive, and active in God's people.
  • In response to Habakkuk's oracle, the Lord answered him that "the righteous live by their faith" (Hab. 2:4b). But just what does it mean to be righteous? It's a righteousness imparted by God, who creates and claims each of us as God's own sons and daughters, bringing us into this family by our baptisms and by the faith God gives us makes us holy children. Being part of this divine family gives us our worth, even at those times we may not think of ourselves as worthy.
  • In 2 Timothy, the author writes a history of the faith in Timothy's family, beginning with his grandmother and then passed on to his mother and himself. This is how many of us were first brought into the family of God: we had faithful parents who knew of their own God-given righteousness and then passed this gift on to their children. But again, it's all God's doing!
  • Finally, Jesus' disciples boldly ask their teacher to "Increase our faith" (Luke 17:5). They knew that faith was something needed, and Jesus explains that even a small amount of faith can do great wonders. What does it mean to have this sort of faith, a faith that can serve God's purposes here to truly be God's work and yet it's done with our hands?  [Sundays and Seasons 2016]

We gather this Sunday where we will share our commitment of time/talent/treasure for 2017 and bless animals who are our beloved companions to help us experience this faith that God has given us. Faith is a gift and connection to our God. See you in worship when we celebrate the abundance of God's blessings!

Readings and Psalm for Sunday, October 2, 2016
Habakkuk 1:1-4; 2:1-4 - Wicked surround the righteous; wait for the Lord
Psalm 37:1-9 - Commit your way to the Lord; put your trust in the Lord. (Ps. 37:5)
2 Timothy 1:1-14 - Guard the treasure entrusted to you: faith and love in Christ
Luke 17:5-10 - Faith the size of a mustard seed

Francis of Assisi, renewer of the church, died 1226

Tuesday, October 4, 2016
Born into the family of a wealthy merchant, Francis gave up his inheritance to serve poor people. He formed the Order of Friars Minor (called Franciscans), who took on poverty and the task of preaching "using words if necessary." Francis had a spirit of gratitude for all of God's creation.

Pastor Bill will bless animals at both 8:00 and 10:00 am services this Sunday and for All Saints' Preschool this Tuesday and Wednesday at 11:45 am.

Hope House Meeting Here on Thursday, October 6th

Hope House, Wolfeboro, a transitional housing facility proposed to help homeless families in the Governor Wentworth Regional School District (GWRSD), has recently been delayed due to a Carroll County Superior Court appeal by a Wolfeboro resident. In order to keep residents of the GWRSD informed Maureen Beauregard, Founder and President of Families in Transition (FIT), will be speaking at an open meeting next Thursday, October 6 at 7:00 pm in the Parish Hall.

Wolfeboro Reads October Book

In "But I don't see you as Asian: Curating Conversations About Race," Bruce Reyes-Chow curates a collection of cringe-inducing statements about race such as, "If they can say it, why can't I?" " "Do you know martial arts?" and "He's a different kind of Black," hoping to turn awkward moments into a dialogue between friends.
Sitting in the sweet spot between lectures in academia and activism on the streets, Bruce invites the reader into a salon type of atmosphere where he directly addresses thoughtless words and diversionary tactics, such as dismissing racial discussions as being impolite or avoiding race conversations altogether. He invites the reader to chuckle, gasp, and perhaps nod in understanding as he lists the kinds of statements often used against persons of color in a predominantly white culture. But rather than stopping there, Bruce asks readers to swap shoes with him and reconsider their assumptions about race.
Join us on Tuesdays, October 11th, 18th and 25th 4:00-5:30 pm at First Congregational Church Wolfeboro as Pastors Bill and Gina facilitate community discussion of one person's joys and struggles for dissection and discovery.

Blessing of the Animals

You are invited to bring your beloved one(s) who bark, meow, chirp, squeak, or don't make any sounds to worship on Sunday, October 2nd. Blessings for larger animals can be arranged with Pastor Bill and you may bring a picture to remember a beloved pet that is deceased or unable to attend for any reason.
Phoebe VanScoy-Giessler
Phoebe's exemplary ministry as editor of the eNews extended over 5 years.  Her new job adds additional hours to her work day, and necessitated that she give up this position.

It will take a team (Carolyn Sundquist, Ralph Simons, and Phil Wasmuth) to replace her. Our goal is to provide the same  quality of service that Phoebe brought to this task each week.

Job well done, Phoebe.  Well done.

Phil Wasmuth, editor

Mass near the Grass
Sunday, September 25th

Because the temperature was in the mid 40 degree range, the mass on the grass was moved to near the grass in the undercroft.

The mass was followed by a potluck brunch.

Mass Near the Grass
Lynne Moughty and the choir sang the spiritual, "I'm So Glad He Lifted Me, during the service.
Options for Helping Refugees
Currently, there is a record number of refugees in the world. There are families fleeing violence and young children crossing the border into the US alone. Some legal, thoroughly-vetted refugee families are coming to NH to settle. While most refugees are in other parts of the world and few, if any, of those coming to NH will be living in Wolfeboro, there are likely ways that we can help, beyond contributing funds to refugee relief organizations. Please let Warren Muir know if you are interested in exploring options for our community, our parish, or yourself to be involved in helping those displaced from their homes. He will be at the Mission Outreach Fair with information about the Governor Wentworth Area Volunteer Co-op or can be reached at [email protected] or 202-495-1128.
All Saints' Entrances Receive a Fresh Coat of Paint
Peter and Susie Walker painted five entrances to All Saints' Church.  Dianne Wasmuth brightened, with Episcopalian Red, the door to outreach building.  Thank you for visually improving the entrances.

Bishop A. Robert Hirschfeld's visit to All Saints'
Bishop Hirschfeld visited All Saints. on Sunday September 11th. He was the celebrant at both the 8 & 10 am services. Bishop Hirschfeld met with the congregation for Q&A between services and after the second service he was lifted up to the roof on a special lift, operated by Anne Hunt, to bless the new solar panels. You will not want to miss the 3-minute slide show with two video clips of Bishop Hirschfeld being lifted to the "heavens".
This was an important day in the life of our church, and you can see it if you click on the website and then click on Start Slideshow.
The music chosen for the video is a Shaker hymn titled, Lord of the Dance.  This hymn was performed by our choir as the communion hymn at the 10 am service.

Sincerely,
Phil Wasmuth

The Rt. Reverend A. Robert Hirschfeld, Celebrant at All Saints and blessing of the solar panels;

Fair Chair 2017 Search
A committee of recent summer fair chairs is searching for summer fair leaders for 2017. The leaders do not need to be spouses, or even close friends. The fair chairs have met and talked about the terrific experiences that each experienced. Some of the experiences were transformative. Over the last several issues, past leaders have stated in the eNews their positive experiences leading the fair.

This week Charlie Kellogg and Lynne Moughty   relate experiences from leading the fair this year.

Please give leading the fair prayerful consideration. Past fair chairs have pledged to be with the leaders on this journey, and will provide help and guidance each step of the journey.

Sincerely,
Phil Wasmuth
Summer Fair Co-chairs selection committee

"You too can be as happy as we are when you have the experience of being co chairs of the annual All Saints Summer Fair.

We agree with all that has been said and all that will be said in this bulletin about the experience of being chair persons of the Summer Fair. It is indeed rewarding not only for fulfilling an obligation of service to the church but more importantly the satisfaction and happiness that you will experience from working with such a great group of dedicated volunteers. It is truly the great feeling of practicing and living the Christian Life.

Do it. We will all help. You will not regret it.

Charlie & Lynne,  2016 Summer Fair Chairs

UTO is Back!
Do you need a new Little Blue Box? Beginning this fall, All Saints Church will restore its semi-annual United Thank Offering Ingathering of coins that individual Episcopalians give as daily expressions of thanks for their many blessings. Most parishioners keep their Blue Box on their dresser where they can drop in their change at the end of the day. Collected twice a year, the contents of a Blue Box may seem small, but pooled together across the diocese and the wider church, they become a mighty sum that can do great good at home and abroad. The fall UTO Ingathering is held on a Sunday in October so that collected gifts can be presented at Diocesan Convention the first weekend in November. Watch for the date in the next issues of All Saints E-mail. New Blue Boxes are available in the narthex.

A Season of Thankfulness
"I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." John 15:5
Bishop Rob reminds us "when Jesus identifies himself with a grapevine and God the Father as the vinedresser, he's not talking about making grapes.  He's talking about the resilient, relentlessly outstretching, and healthy life that God longs for all of us." With Jesus as the vine, we are the branches that are connected to God and one another. We grow and produce good fruit through our life together for one another and for the sake of the world.

During the coming weeks, we will be focusing on the abundant leaves of blessing, the gifts we are given and give thanks for. Your worship bulletin will contain a green leaf of thanksgiving each week for you to share a blessing you are thankful for and place in the offering plate. We will share some of the blessings in worship and visually connect them to an ever growing vine of interconnectedness. The leaders of All Saints' hope the growing display of our abundant blessing moves us to recognize more and more the many ways we are blessed.

Commitment Sunday
Next Sunday, October 2nd is Commitment Sunday at All Saints' and we will celebrate the abundance of our good and gracious God.. At both worship services we will present our commitments of time, talent and treasure for 2017. Commitment cards will arrive by mail and be available in worship as well. Those individuals/households making a commitment for 2017 will have a bunch of grapes added to our vine covered with the leaves of blessings we have shared as part of our offering during this season of thanksgiving.

Wolfeboro Reads:
Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates

We will meet each week (with some exceptions), from 4:00-5:30pm in the Gathering Space at FCCW, 115 S. Main St. We will spend a few weeks on each book that we read. To start, we have a chosen an award-winning book, also nominated for a Pulitzer Prize by a journalist for the The Atlantic. It is written in memoir style, as letters to his teenaged son, reflecting on the issues of race in America. The Wolfeboro Public Library has several copies available. All are welcome!
