CONNECTING COMMUNITY AND GARDENS

Digging in the dirt was great to do when we were kids and it's still fun today as adults! The Harbourfront Community Centre  (HCC) knows firsthand how beneficial gardening is for one's health, offering volunteers of all ages the chance to get dirty! HCC currently has a community vegetable garden plot at Fort York and seniors also grow herbs in our courtyard. The demand for garden space continued to grow and now we have begun to bring life back into an overgrown, vacant space next to the Community Centre!

Vote for the Harbourfront Community Centre

The Community Connect Garden will be an interactive space with butterfly-friendly, drought-resistant plants; a kitchen garden for herbs/veggies; a children's story garden, original art, seating and wheelchair-accessible raised planting beds. The Garden will be volunteer-built and funded through donations.

HCC is competing for funds in the Share Your Care contest offered by Fido and Evergreen. You can help by voting daily until August 14th  to support HCC's garden! For more information, contact Karen here.

GOT HALITOSIS? WE CAN HELP!

Halitosis is also referred to as oral malodor, but most of us know it quite simply as "bad breath".

Bad breath can be distressing and a bit of a social handicap. It's not a wonder that we spend millions each year on efforts to freshen our breath with various gums, mints, sprays, and mouthwashes.

According to an Oral-B survey, 44% of Canadians cite bad breath as the "most offensive oral misdemeanour in the workplace" - and 1 in 10 say they will miss meetings in order to avoid speaking to colleagues with bad breath!

The most common cause of halitosis is bacteria on the teeth and tongue that can produce unpleasant and very toxic chemicals. There are a plethora of other causes including smoking, alcohol, dentures, and more.

The awkward irony of halitosis is that many people aren't aware they have it. This is because the cells in the nose that are responsible for the sense of smell actually become unresponsive to the continuous stream of bad odour.

 Infinity Dental

Proper care of the mouth and teeth and regular visits to the dentist are important and are the most effective way to control bad breath. Regular brushing, flossing, rinsing, and tongue scraping can help prevent problems.

At Infinity Dental we can help with the identification and treatment of bad breath. We will evaluate and analyze your halitosis concern and ensure that you will be confident about your breath.

Receive a free electric toothbrush! Call for more details. Offer ends Aug. 31, 2011.

FEEL REFRESHED AND UPLIFTED

Life can be stressful. One way to reduce the stress in your life is to find a spa that works for you and your lifestyle. Kalena Aroma Boutique and Spa is a favourite mini-getaway in the waterfront area, located at the base of Spadina Avenue.

Combining a spa and boutique for her organic product line, owner Elena Kalyuzhnaya has been helping to relax and rejuvenate Torontonians for the past several years. One favourite treatment, "Wrapped Up in Seaweeds," is 90 minutes of pure bliss, ending with a rainfall shower and cup of Wild Seaweed Garden Tea.

Many of the featured organic products are made on location. Clients can purchase healing products like Rose Facial Tonic Hydrosol, a gentle spray that can be used as a quick spritz during a "hot flash," or to soothe anxiety.

Kalyuzhnaya points out, "My products are meant to complement rather than replace medical treatments." Her knowledge of aroma therapy allows her to guide her clients to the best solutions for their needs.

Waterfront Experience Card holders receive 10% OFF all regular priced spa and services (RMT excluded) at the Waterfront Location this August.

AN HISTORICAL TREASURE ON
TORONTO'S WATERFRONT

There is a quiet, unassuming earlier period masterpiece right on Toronto's Waterfront that has been having adventures for 68 years!

It's Nautical Adventures' Tall Ship, the Empire Sandy.

She was built in England as an Englishman/Larch class Deep Sea tugboat (not a Tall Ship!) and went into service on July 14, 1943.

Empire Sandy - Before

Empire Sandy: Before

She sailed on war duty in the Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, Indian Ocean, Bay of Bengal and the English Channel. Learn the Sandy's complete story and view Official Log Books of her voyages in WWII here.

Empire Sandy - After

Empire Sandy: After

In 1982, a metamorphosis was complete, changing the WWII tugboat to a grand 1800-style Tall Ship. As a Tall Ship, the Empire Sandy has sailed in all the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence Seaway, Boston, New York, Bermuda, Bahamas, Cuba, and other Caribbean seas.

Be a part of history and sail on one of the Sandy's cruises! The 2011 sailing season includes two afternoon Air Show Cruises on Sept. 3 and 4; call for details. Check out our website for our program for the War of 1812 celebrations!

QUEENS QUAY BOULEVARD
DESIGN UPDATE

Waterfront Toronto has completed 60% of the engineering drawings for the revitalization of Queens Quay Boulevard from Lower Spadina Avenue to Bay Street. After an extensive series of meetings with stakeholder groups, City of Toronto and TTC staff and a public meeting, the detailed drawings have been submitted to the City for review. The project will transform the dysfunctional street into a grand boulevard on the waterfront.

The City's funding commitment for the project is expected to be in place in September and then the first stage of construction can begin in the fall.

Waterfront Toronto

The public is invited to review the detailed design at our office. Please contact us to arrange to see the drawings.

YORK QUAY CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Excavation continues for the York Quay underground parking garage next to Harbourfront Centre and crews have begun to prepare for the construction of the parking garage.

During the last month, approximately 20,000 cubic metres of soil and rock have been excavated and construction crews are now 10 metres below grade in most of the construction site.  The majority of the excavation will be completed in August and the first stages of construction will begin. The construction will involve waterproofing of the excavated area, concrete works and the construction of the footings for the tower crane that will be used to move materials for the construction of the garage.

WHERE YOU ARE MORE THAN A PATIENT

Waterview Dental is pleased to announce that we are opening our 3rd office in the Waterfront area!

After launching our first location on Queens Quay six years ago, we opened Cityview Dental at Spadina & Bremner just three years later. We are expanding once again to include Parkview Dental at Lakeshore and Bathurst, near the statue of the Fallen Soldier.  All three offices are proud to serve Toronto's waterfront community, offering regular dental services as well as Invisalign clear aligners and Zoom! bleaching treatments.

Waterview Dental

Parkview Dental is expected to open on August 22, and we continue to provide service in all phases of dentistry at our other two locations. You'll enjoy a warm and inviting atmosphere during your visit with us. Our patients often tell us that our office feels more like a spa than a dental office - and we wouldn't have it any other way!

YANKEE LADY CAME TO TOWN

Toronto's Yankee Lady Yacht Charters has been operating for over 28 years, starting in the early 80s when cousins John and Jim Greeley partnered up to purchase their first cruise boat, the Yankee Lady I. Soon after, the 100-passenger Yankee Lady II was added and began cruising in the Toronto Harbour.

With dreams of providing a larger venue to the Toronto community for weddings and corporate functions, John began to design the Yankee Lady III in the mid-90s while attending the Marine Survey School in Florida.

Slowly over two years, what was drawn on paper became a reality, and John and Jim, with the help of others, built the Yankee Lady III with their own hands. In 1997 the 300-passenger Toronto cruise boat was named the most beautiful passenger ship in the harbour.

Six years later, the Greeley cousins built a fourth addition to the Yankee Lady family that included heating and air conditioning. The Yankee Lady IV began operating the summer of 2006, the same year that I and II were sold.

 Yankee Lady

Today, as in the 80's, Yankee Lady Yacht Charters takes pride in providing great service for 2 to 300 people on its Toronto owned, designed and built yachts.
