CHERRY TREE LANE LAUNCHED

AT CENTRE ISLAND

Cherry Tree Lane

Friends of Toronto Islands (FOTI), in cooperation with Toronto Island Park representatives, held an inauguration ceremony on June 11 for Cherry Tree Lane at Centre Island.  Steve Fry, President of FOTI, welcomed the acting Consul-General of Japan, Mr. Nobuaki Yamamoto, for the ceremonial tree planting.  Working with FOTI, the Consulate-General of Japan donated 30 Japanese flowering cherry trees as a symbol of goodwill and friendship between Canada and Japan.

The trees line Cherry Tree Lane, a pathway near the fountain at the south end of the bridge on the way to Centre Island beach.  Cherry Tree Lane promises to be a spectacular site during cherry blossom season. The trees could begin to blossom as early as May 2012.

FOTI is a local not-for-profit organization established in 2009. The group provides support to the City of Toronto in maintaining and improving the Toronto Island Park experience. In addition to organizing social and recreational activities throughout the year to encourage the use of the Toronto Islands, FOTI is looking at other projects to enhance the Toronto Island experience.

A WELCOMING PLACE FOR ALL

This year, Harbourfront Community Centre (HCC) celebrates its 20th Anniversary. With two decades of quality programming and unfailing community service support, we truly have a lot to celebrate. And so do the thousands of devoted and energetic volunteers who have been essential to HCC's success.

HCC grew from humble beginnings when we ran just a handful of programs out of 3 portables. Now operating out of a multi-purpose, multi-agency building, last year we were able to offer over 1,866 program sessions and welcomed more than 346,000 visitors!  We look forward to even greater success in the next 20 years by continuing to be a hub of community activity for young families, children of all ages, youths, adults and seniors.

HCC

Please help us make our 20th anniversary party - Have A Ball! - a huge success.  We need event volunteers, corporate sponsors, and silent auction/raffle donations. This is going to be the community party of the year, so join us on Saturday, October 22 for an evening of fun, food and friendship. For more information contact Karen at karen@harbourfrontcc.ca.

YOUR MOUTH... YOUR LIFE!

Heart disease, stroke, diabetes and Alzheimer's: there's no escaping the fact that the health of your mouth affects your entire body.

Your mouth plays host to thousands of bacteria, many of which cause cavities and periodontal (gum) disease. These bacteria travel from the mouth into the rest of your body through inflamed tissue walls. The bacteria then settle in susceptible areas of the body including your heart and blood vessels, which leads to what can be major systemic problems.  For instance, people with diabetes are three times more susceptible to gum disease, and new research shows that gum disease actually increases one's susceptibility to diabetes.

Pregnant women who have gum disease may be seven times more likely to have a baby that is premature or of low birth weight. Other research has associated poor oral health with higher incidence of breast cancer in women and respiratory infections in the elderly.

Your team at Infinity Dental is dedicated to providing the best treatment options possible for your oral health so that your mouth does not adversely affect your life.

A HIP DESTINATION

Lusso Restaurant

The best bar/lounge/restaurant/patio you may never have heard of is quickly becoming the most popular destination on Toronto's bustling Waterfront.

Recommended by no less than the New York Times and sweetspot.ca, and hailed as "your only lakeside option when looking for fine wining and dining" by Eye Weekly, Lusso Restaurant in Queen's Quay Terminal is a hip bar with a perfect menu and an inviting lakeside patio.

Executive Chef Ryan Kowalyk's concise menu ranging from Salad Niçoise to Fish and Chips, to Beef Tenderloin and Burgers from The Friendly Butcher, is designed to offer a quality dining experience to be enjoyed under the expansive umbrellas sheltering more than 150 lakeside patio seats or on the upper level where the seating is reminiscent of the deck on a luxury ocean liner.

Complement the great food with a martini, cocktail or a glass of wine and you'll swear you're vacationing in South Beach, Miami and not on the shores of Lake Ontario.

MAKING WAVES ON THE WATERFRONT

Have you ever walked by a marina and wondered who lives on all those boats or what it would be like to live there too, even for just a few nights? Well now you can! As Toronto's most unique bed and breakfast (B&B), Making Waves Boatel offers a vacation holiday, romantic weekend getaway or a refreshing change for business travelers.

Today Diane and Ted share their lifestyle and passion for boating with their guests aboard their 65-foot motor yacht moored at HtO Park West on Queens Quay. Guests are gently rocked to sleep and wake up to the smell of freshly brewed coffee and a gourmet breakfast while surrounded by a postcard view of the city and Toronto's Waterfront.

Now you too can experience life on the water.

100 YEARS ON YOUR WATERFRONT

More than just the city skyline has changed since Toronto was founded in the 18th century. Not only has it become Canada's financial heart, but it now boasts Canada's most diverse population. Change is a constant for the big TO, but there are some things that have stayed around as well. The Toronto Port Authority (TPA, formerly Toronto Harbour Commissioners) has been a proud business on Toronto's Waterfront since 1911.

Today, the TPA runs the popular Billy Bishop Airport, the Outer Harbour Marina, and is responsible for the Port of Toronto and Harbour of Toronto. It's also been keeping the waters of Toronto's harbour clean and clear of debris for a hundred years.  To mark its centenarToronto Port Authorityy, the TPA is participating in several events. It is this year's Lead Summer Partner of Harbourfront Centre's Hot Spot Summer and also recently participated in Doors Open Toronto for the first time in several years.

The TPA is looking forward to another 100 years of serving Toronto and Canada.

SWEET PERFECTION

Visiting Vineyards Estate Wines is like walking into a Niagara-On-The-Lake winery, only better, because it sits in the middle of our beautiful Waterfront.

Of course Vineyards Estate Wines only carries the best wines and that means that our shelves are stocked exclusively with wine from Ontario's famous Niagara-On-The-Lake region. Wines from Peller Estates, Hillebrand Estate Wines and Thirty Bench Winery are world-renown.

Vineyards Estate Wines has become a waterfront destination because of our wide selection of Icewines. This elegant dessert wine is unique to the Niagara region, as it is selected from naturally frozen grapes picked on the coldest nights of our Canadian winters. Frozen grapes produce only a few pin drops of sweet perfection, but the wine that Niagara frozen grapes produce is known internationally for its complex and luxurious aroma and taste.
