If your family is able, we suggest an annual donation of $500 per child, broken down in payments of $50/month for 10 months. You can make your donation online here, or enclose your check made payable to Friends of King and return in a sealed envelope to the main office or mail to Friends of King, 4201 Fountain Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90029.

NO AMOUNT IS TOO SMALL, so please donate what you can so we can continue to have the funds to keep our school a California Gold Ribbon School and the highest performing middle school in the North East LAUSD region!

Curators Club - Calling All Artists!

Kingsters, did you realize that every magnet on our campus is related to the art? That means you, yes you, should consider entering art into the next student art show.

The curators have decided our last gallery art show of the semester will have a dual-theme of Stereotypes and Music , so think what either of those ideas means to you and make art. All mediums are accepted including but not limited to painting, drawing, photography, mixed media, sculpture, video and performance.
Turn in work to Ms. Roth, room 316, or Ms. Hoefer, 149, by January 10, giving you all the holiday break to create! Work is accepted at all grade levels, all magnets. An opening reception will be held in the new year in the student art gallery where there will be prizes, music, and refreshments, so start creating! Remember art makes you
smart!

Imagine a Sustainable
School Curriculum...

ESM teachers Ms. Grimaldi, Ms. Jones, Ms. Mitsuse, and GAT teacher Mr. Gabriel were guests of the Children's Environmental Literacy Foundation at the Green California Schools and Community Colleges Summit and Exposition.
The teachers attended a breakfast meeting with California State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson.
Also, the teachers worked with Ten Strands founder, Will Parish, along with representatives from Sepulveda Middle School and Wilmington STEAM Magnet to develop sustainable schools curricula.

Save the date fun and soccer enthusiasts!
Our annual Silverlake/Los Feliz community event 'The Los Silver Lake Invitational Soccer Cup' will take place on Saturday, February 10th, 2018 at the Marshall High School Field. There will be a community of local schools coming together to play soccer, cheer, and raise money for our school and three other local schools (Franklin Avenue ES, Ivanhoe ES, and MichelTorena ES)!  Expect a festival atmosphere with food, music, kid's activities, games, demonstrations, and dedicated parent partners showing their loyalties on the soccer pitch!

Come out for scrimmage on Sundays!
Our glorious King Parent Soccer Team has been training on Sundays for a couple of weeks now.  Come out to cheer them up or kick the ball and have fun with your fellow King parents, teachers and staff!  Everyone is invited and all skill levels are welcome. Contact Julie Hall-Panameno at julcool@sbcglobal.net to find out about practice times and locations.

Come out for drinks this Tuesday evening!
Kick off the Los Silver Lake Invitational soccer season with our fellow Eagles, Dragons, Foxes and Lions for an entertaining evening at Hyperion Public this Tuesday, December 6th from 8 pm to 11 pm. Hyperion Public is located at 2538 Hyperion Avenue, 90027.
All you have to do is come, preferably with a spouse or friend, and drink a few. Thanks to our friends at Hyperion Public, a percentage of the receipts goes back to our schools to pay for field and ref fees in the spring.  Parents new to the community -- come out and meet some folks. Veterans, show us the  way.

There were field trips, assemblies, guest speakers, parent meetings and workshops, sport events, community events, etc... Thanks to parents, teachers, students, friends photographers, and our awesome KSNC (King Student News Channel), we have captured some moments in pictures or videos for you, as well as some info you might want to refer back to. 6th grade ESM field trips

ESM Sixth Graders have been on many field trip adventures this past month.  All ESM sixth grades embarked on walking field trips to attend the "Condemned to be Modern" exhibit, part of the citywide Pacific Standard Time art event, at Barnsdall Art Park.  Students examined the exhibits, took part in art activities, and then created their own art pieces.

6th grade ESM robotics

In  Mr. Aleman's Robotics class, students  designed and  built rovers using legos and  also  have been programming sensors, such as ultrasonic and color sensors, to accomplish challenging tasks. Following a line, avoiding obstacles, moving in a square and participating in a sumo wrestling competition are some of the challenges students have completed so far.

7th grade ESM update:
ESM STEAM Magnet students, in Ms. Altounian's 7th grade Math class, e xperienced  the joy of art and math in using scrap they have to create Big Projects.
Their task was to use a common household product or item to design and build a larger scale  model of the item.   You can see the love and joy of learning through their projects. (See photos)

Grade 8 Think-like a Researcher :
Blast to the past as the 8th-graders researched technology they believed to be obsolete, dead, or dying for our annual Day of the Dead Technology Project. To see their memorials to these dearly departed devices, take a look at this slideshow  of the altars. As a celebration of their work and the machines, the 8th-graders invited classes, teachers, and parents to join in on the celebration with a gallery of the altars in the library. See pictures of the event here .

Grade 7 Think-like a Mathematician and Zoologist:
7th-graders were math detectives at work solving a system of equations clue to find who was the thief that stole the ice block needed for a gala. After solving that crime, they headed to the Los Angeles Zoo to collect evidence for their annual Zoopalooza project, a cross-curricular study of animals, their habitats, and the dangers threatening their existence. Students will work in all areas of this research project, from science and history to math and English. See pictures of their zoo adventure here .

Grade 6 Think-like an Art Historian:
After a 2+ hr. bus ride worthy of Odysseus himself, the 6th-grade Gifted Arts/Tech classes of Mr. Purdy, Mr. Piumarta, Mr. Gabriel and Mr. Garnett enjoyed their annual trip to the
galleries of the Getty Villa Museum in Malibu, CA.
They viewed Greco-Roman statues of Zeus and Athena, Roman mummies, ancient coins, pottery, jewelry, and experienced the Family forum where they could act out Greek myths and decorate vases. They look forward to returning next year!
