Florida Courier: St. Petersburg AKAs to celebrate 60th anniversary 
 
The Zeta Upsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (AKA) will celebrate 60 years of service Dec. 18-20 at the St. Petersburg Hilton Hotel. The St. Petersburg chapter was chartered on Dec. 15 in 1955 by 15 women.

The chartering members were Annie Barton, Ruth Batson, Pauline Besselli, Lena Brown, Mary O. Brown, Claronell Griffin, Bertha James, Rubye Wysinger, Dorothy Johnson, Elizabeth Jones, Annie McLin, Willie M. McMurray, Eloise E. Perkins, Verdya Robinson, and Florence Williams. Lena Brown was the first president.

Tampa Bay Times: St. Petersburg ponders decriminalizing small-time marijuana possession  
 
In an effort to reduce the ranks of nonviolent offenders in local jails, City Council members asked Pinellas commissioners Thursday to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana.

But council members also authorized city attorneys to draft their own proposal in case Pinellas doesn't act and follow the lead of Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties in reducing the punishment for the offense from possible jail time to a mere fine.

Tampa Bay Times: Much of historic bank building on Central Avenue might see wrecking ball, new apartments 
 
A decades-long wait to redevelop a key block on Central Avenue might be nearing an end after a city commission approved the demolition of most of the historic 89-year-old Union Trust bank building.

The redevelopment of the block downtown was a priority for Mayor Rick Kriseman.
