The IRS Says Identity Thieves Hacked Its Systems Again
|
Identity thieves attempted to breach computer systems at the Internal Revenue Service to file fraudulent tax refunds.
The criminals were especially after E-file PINs, which are used by some individuals to electronically file a return, the agency said in a statement released Tuesday. Around 464,000 unique social security numbers were involved, and of that total, 101,000 SSNs were used to successfully access an E-file PIN.
The thieves used personal taxpayer data that was stolen elsewhere to help generate the PINs, the agency said. No personal data was compromised or disclosed by IRS systems, and affected taxpayers will be notified by mail of the attack. "The IRS is also protecting their accounts by marking them to protect against tax-related identity theft," the agency added.

Tough Cookies
Still going strong after 135 years, Otterbein's Bakery has hit on the recipe for success.
Inside a small warehouse in Windsor Mill, the air is rich with the salty-sweet smell of butter and sugar. Here, a wall of refrigerators is filled with pillowy balls of cookie dough, all made in two nearby mixers from an age-old family recipe. The dough is flattened and cut into hearts, flowers, and stars, which slide onto baking trays to be placed on tall racks. Once full, the racks are rolled into floor-to-ceiling ovens, and after 10 minutes, the cutouts come out as cookies, which are cooled and "shuffled" off the trays into stacks, like a deck of playing cards. From there, each paper-thin cookie is delicately placed in a bag by hand, 20 or so deep. The bags are then weighed on a scale, sent down the production line, and packed into boxes, before being shipped out on delivery trucks to be sold across the Mid-Atlantic.

Fed's Yellen cites global risks but says U.S. should motor through
Tightening financial conditions driven by falling stock prices, uncertainty over China and a global reassessment of credit risk could throw the U.S. economy off track from an otherwise solid course, Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen said on Wednesday in prepared testimony to Congress.
In testimony that combined a steady-as-she-goes account of Fed policy with an acknowledgement of intensifying risks, Yellen said there are good reasons to believe the United States will stay on a path of moderate growth that will allow the Fed to pursue "gradual" adjustments to monetary policy.
Family incomes and wealth are rising, domestic spending "has continued to advance," and business investment outside the oil sector accelerated in the second half of the year, she said. Yellen said she expects the labour market to continue to improve and inflation eventually rise towards the Fed's target despite a recent drop in inflation expectations cited by some policymakers as particularly unnerving.
