This is our inaugural newsletter-- I hope it finds you well!  The 

last year has seen tremendous growth and change at The 

Smithy.  In addition to a new After-School Arts Program that 

includes theatre, painting, dance, and pottery, we also launched 

Community Art Night, Books We Love to Watch Film Class, a 

Concert Series and the Writer's Circle.  

 

This summer, we have even more wonderful things in store: our ever-exciting gallery exhibits, concerts, theatre, film, storytelling, classes & workshops... Enough to keep you busy straight through September!  So read on-- there's something for everyone!

Dante's Alley by Margaret Krug
Currently, Margaret Krug's (former senior lecturer at The Whitney and author of An Artist's Handbook) Memory & Presence and solo shows by Edmond Rinnooy Kan and Karen Rosasco, as well as the Pottery Teacher Show, are on view until June 23rd. Margaret Krug works entirely using Renaissance techniques, creating her own pigments and paints, and using materials such as silver leaf, beeswax, distemper, egg tempera, silverpoint and graphite to create stunning paintings and drawings.

Baye Kouyate
A summer full of performing arts awaits you at The Smithy!  Our Courtyard Concert Series includes rockin' performances from Reggae Vision (6/25), internationally acclaimed Malian drummer Baye Kouyate (7/9), and Patti Van Tassel (7/30).  
In August,
the stage is set for Midsummer Madness-- Shakespeare workshops & performances led by Melinda Hall-- as well as two performances of Beauty Shop Stories, the 2010 Fringe Festival winning musical, and a storytelling workshop with the writer/star Faye Lane.  And speaking of stories, don't miss our Storytelling Series: three free evenings of Heroes, Travelers' Tales, and Mischief Makers!

 

Cooperstown Film Festival
The First & Soon-To-Be Annual!

The one thing Cooperstown is sorely lacking is  a movie theatre. Well, we're doing one better:  a film festival!  The Smithy is thrilled to be teaming with Brewery Ommegang to present Cooperstown Film Festival August 19th & 20th.  Schedule & special guests to be announced very soon- keep it on your radar!
