Alaska- It’s a National Sell

It’s safe to say the Lower 48 has always had an infatuation with Alaska, and this past year we saw some national brands enhance their presence by leveraging the Last Frontier into a marketing campaign.

Taco Bell “Thinks Outside” in Bethel

Taco Bell took what started out as a social media hoax in Alaska and turned it into a one-of-a-kind PR opportunity for its national audience. They created a commercial series, “Operation Alaska,” showing an airlifted food truck bringing thousands of tacos to the remote town of Bethel. While the commercials may seem silly to Alaskans, they create a “good neighbor” feel to the Taco Bell brand.

Walmart Gets the Last Laugh

A Facebook campaign backfired when Walmart announced it would send music artist Pitbull to a store location that received the most Facebook “Likes” by a certain date. A comedic website called Something Awful thought it would be funny to send the rapper to the most remote Walmart in America and launched its own informal social media campaign to win the “Likes” contest for the Kodiak, Alaska location. The #ExilePitbull campaign paid off generating more than 60,000 Facebook Likes (almost 10 times the island’s population) for the Kodiak Walmart. The Miami rapper held his end of the deal visiting Kodiak and the event generated tons of national media coverage for Walmart.

So what if these companies had responded differently to their social media challenges? They probably would have missed out on a great opportunity to share their brand in a fun and impactful way. It’s important for companies and organizations to consider how their public engagement can transform into something unique and memorable, and be launched across a variety of platforms. But don’t sweat it, that’s what Solstice Advertising is here to help you do!
