Thanks for Celebrating the Hope St Parklet With Us

Over 150 members of the community came together last Tuesday to celebrate Los Angeles Department of Transportation's People St Program receiving the prestigious National Planning Achievement Award for the Hope Street Parklet.

The award was made possible by the strong partnerships between LADOT, SPBID, Neighborhood Councils, The Office of Councilmember Huizar, and The People St Program.

The Block Party featured delicious food by Chef Mario Christerna of local favorite, The Briks, and a musical performance by the incredible Festival of Masks.

Thank you to the above organizations and the many sponsors who helped make the Parklet a reality!

LADOT Proposes Changes to DTLA DASH Serviceladotdashhearing
SPBID Attends Public Hearing on Behalf of Neighborhood

SPBID staff attended a public hearing held by the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) to discuss proposed additions and changes to the Downtown DASH service.

Changes proposed by LADOT include extending service hours to 9 PM, extending DASH B to Pico Blvd and extending DASH F along 7th St to the Arts District. SPBID staff gave feedback that the modifications do not go far enough in addressing the inadequacies in the current system for South Park stakeholders.

Specifically, the SPBID recommended later hours, more weekend service and an East-West route to the Fashion and Arts Districts, south of 7th St.  LADOT staff has agreed to meet with Downtown stakeholders to further discuss the needs of the neighborhood in order to refine the proposal. The SPBID will be developing a fact sheet, so stay tuned for updates.

South Park Chefs Get Major Recognition spchefs
Chef Ray Garcia and Chef Mario Christerna

Chef Ray Garcia
As a native Angeleno, Chef Ray Garcia draws his culinary inspiration from the city's rich culture, the wealth of Southern California produce, and classic training. Garcia has been consistently recognized for philosophies on environmental stewardship, and commitment to responsible farming and food production, honored with StarChefs "Rising Star" Award for Sustainability in 2010. In 2014 Garcia took home the title of "King of Porc" at Cochon 555, an event celebrating the heritage breed pig.

Chef Mario Christerna
Chef Mario Christerna attended Le Cordon Bleu in Pasadena, studying under his mentor, North African chef Farid Zadi.  "This is not just a torta place or a taco place," Christerna says of the Briks. "I wanted my first restaurant to be a reflection of my struggle. I wanted to transmit my journey through my food, through my art. Coming into here is like coming into my heart, coming into my brain, coming into my palate, coming into my life."
