What Do YOU Want in SP's New Parklet?Parklet

Tell SPBID What Should Be in this New Public Space

As you may be aware, SPBID has applied for a parklet on the SW corner of 11th and Hope St.

A parklet is a small park that takes over 2-3 parking spaces.  There are 4 pilot parklets in LA, two of which are on the Historic Core's Spring St between 6th & 7th.

We want to hear from all of you - what would you use a parklet for, and what would you like to see in it?

City Council will hold a hearing about the incoming parklets in the next few weeks.  Should it move forward as anticipated, we want this to be the best space it can be for our locals.  With your help, we can build a great community asset!
ChocoChicken to Open this WeekChoco

New Fried Chicken Sports Bar on 12th & Grand is Sure to Please

Golden fried chicken, melting chocolate, bacon biscuits, custom cocktails.  If your mouth isn't watering already, it should be.  ChocoChicken, from the man who brought you Umami Burger, is officially opening its flagship location in South Park this week.

With a twist on traditional fried chicken, the menu of chocolate-infused American favorites and unique drinks (plus no less than 5 TVs for all the game-watching you could want), this place is one most of us can't wait to try out.

Taking over the space on the corner of 12th and Grand previously occupied by Cork Bar, this out-of-the-ordinary spot is just below high-end condo building Evo, and in a perfect location to hang out before, during, or after the game.

For more info and updates on ChocoChicken, check out their Facebook page or their website.

Give Feedback on Utility Infrastructure Loans & Business Promotion

Did you know that the LA Dept. of Water and Power (LADWP) has a Utility Infrastructure Loan program?  How about a Business Promotion plan and program?

Local business owners and residents are highly encouraged to fill our surveys for both of these programs, even if you had not heard of them in the past.

These programs can do great things for our city and local community, but first the LADWP needs to know how they can best serve you.

Fifield, Developer of AVANT Apartments, to Sponsor

The first district banners to ever go up in South Park will be installed today!  Check out Flower between Pico and Venice, and Pico between Figueroa and Flower to see this first installment.

More banners to come soon on more of the streets in the neighborhood.  The goal is to help tie the district together, and give a strong sense of identity for both locals and visitors.

A HUGE thanks to Fifield, who is sponsoring these inaugural banners in a commemoration of their new building, AVANT.  Fifield, with their partner Century West Partners, has been integral to not only their building, but is committed to the success of the community as well.

Green Alley Study to Start This SummerGreen

SPBID Works with LA Sustainability Collaborative on New Initiative

green alley Our community received a myriad of great ideas on improving the built environment of South Park from the ULI TAP study, completed in November of 2013.  One of the many concepts was the greening of alleys in the district, a task which SP BID is now tackling with the help of the Los Angeles Sustainability Collaborative (LASC).

With a fellow from LASC dedicated to cataloging, analyzing, and understanding our alley network, we hope to have a plan for next steps and implementation ready this autumn.  Greening of the alleys can take a tiered approach, from adding wall plants and permeable pavers to opening up for sidewalk dining.  Our hope is to increase the usable public and pedestrian space while making our community more sustainable and not negatively impacting traffic flows.  More to come as our new fellow is chosen and begins their work!

Take DLANC's Short Survey to Help Direct the Future of DTLA

The community of downtown and DLANC (The Downtown LA Neighborhood Council) are embarking on an arduous but important task: to gather all of the visions of the people of DTLA and create a vision plan for the future, based on the needs and wants of those who are here now.  Via a grant from the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG), DLANC is shepherding a planning exercise to articulate the community's vision for downtown Los Angeles.

The success of such an exercise hinges on YOUR participation!  This is not a qualitative survey, where answers will be put into a graph.  This is an effort to obtain specific thoughts and opinions about where DTLA is and where it should go.

Its only a few questions long, and could help start the changes each of us would like to see.  Take the survey today at dtlavisionplan.nationbuilder.com.
Local Pastor Says Goodbye to South ParkSandie

Rev. Sandie Richards To Transfer After 9 Years in the Community

You may not have known Rev. Sandie Richards personally, but as a member of the South Park community, you have probably been touched by her work.

For many years, she was the pastor of First United Methodist Church, whose offices are in the Petroleum Building on Flower and Olympic.  Working with the homeless, local children, after school programs, and community events, in addition to leading her congregation, Rev. Richards has been an integral part of South Park, and will truly be missed.  She also was a member of the SOBO Committee at SPBID, helping to make decisions on the safety, maintenance, and sidewalk issues we face here.

South Park wishes Rev. Richards the best of luck at her new post, which will begin July 1, and encourages her to come back and see the many changes coming to the neighborhood in the coming months.

Community Outreach & Closures Evaluated Before Approval

Thanks to the leadership of Councilmember Huizar and his staff at CD 14, a committee has been formed to vet events with street closures, making sure they do much more community outreach and consider the local residents and businesses.

With representatives of the BIDs of DTLA, DLANC, the Mayor's office, and other important entities, coming to this committee is now a part of obtaining the Councilmember's approval for the event.  After an initial meeting to set up the guidelines of such a group, we have had a first successful evaluation meeting with the representatives from eight incoming large events in the area.  With the influence of this committee, we hope to make events more friendly to the existing and growing community in the downtown area.

This group does not discuss closures due to filming or contraction at this time.  For more information on filming-related closures and to sign up for e-notifications, check out filmla.com/enotifications.php.

BIDs and Small Business Leaders Come Together to Be Prepared

Last month, the LA BID Consortium and SBA (U.S. Small Business Administration) came together through Mayor Garcetti's office in order to learn about preparing for potential catastrophe events.  SPBID took the lead on organizing the BID contingency and coordination with the Mayor's office.  Taking place in the prestigious Tom Bradley Tower in City Hall, the group heard from Lucy Jones, a premier earthquake expert and current advisor to the Mayor, as well as a panel of representatives from various state, local, and federal agencies.
BID clean and safe team representatives were in attendance, as it is likely some of those staff members will be on duty in their district during a disaster event, and may need to act as first responders.  This event has helped catalyze the SPBID into action, and our next Neighborhood Watch meeting will reflect the need to be prepared for possibly emergencies on a large scale.
BIDs Come Together at CA Downtown Conf.CDA

California Downtown Assoc. Shares Best Practices Across the State

Last month, SPBID staff attended the California Downtown Association's "West Coast Urban District Forum", which brought together professionals from around California and western states who work on improving downtowns.
With walking tours and discussions in beautiful downtown San Diego, attendees learned best practices in business attraction, infill development, housing, and bettering the lives of all those who call a downtown home.

South Park BID's ED Jessica Lall spoke on a panel on social media and marketing, while other LA area BID leaders Kerry Morrison and Kent Smith spoke and led panels as well.

Staff also spoke with businesses that could be interested in opening up another location in South Park, and discussed policy issues that impact BIDs across the state.  As a valuable networking and skill-honing event, we hope to implement much of what we've learned in the coming months.

Retail & Restaurants Wanted

As you all are aware, South Park is currently in a stage of positive change and growth, including new developments and infrastructure projects.

Despite the large scale investment happening, there are still vacant storefronts and buildings that are in need of activation.  The BID has a focused effort working with local property owners and leasing brokers to fill our vacant spaces with a combination of  short and long term retail/restaurant space.

If you are a business looking to open a location in this vibrant area of Downtown LA, or a property owner or leasing agent looking to tell the bigger picture story of South Park, please contact Jess Mandelbaum in our office today at:  jmandelbaum@southpark.la
