Submit your recommendations and together we can create change

LADOT Transit Services Bureau has begun a new Transit Service Analysis entitled  "Moving Forward... Together" to improve service around the city.  During this crucial analysis period, we invite South Park stakeholders to send in recommendations on how to improve DASH service in South Park.

As a growing urban neighborhood with high transit needs, we hope that LADOT will consider the following changes to the DASH system in South Park:

Increase Service Times

  • Increase service past 6 PM, especially on weekends
  • Improve bus reliability and capacity

 Broaden Destinations & Access

  • Strengthen east-west connectivity across Downtown LA, particularly along Olympic Blvd., Pico Blvd. and 12th St.
  • Add routes throughout Downtown LA leading to the LA Convention Center and L.A. LIVE to serve tourism, and retain visitors in the Downtown area
  • Focus on connecting destinations, bringing routes from South Park through to the following places:
    • Music Center
    • Disney Concert Hall
    • City Hall
    • Union Station
    • Arts District
    • Historic Core
    • 7th St. business corridor

Escalate Marketing & Connectivity

  • Use existing local organizations (BIDs, Neighborhood Councils, Council Districts, etc.) to spread information that keeps locals informed
  • Continue real-time bus information, and consider building into stops
  • Continue physical stop updates, which make locations increasingly more clear
  • Connect with community organizations on social media, and cross-promote businesses, organizations, and specials along routes

The South Park BID is thrilled that LADOT is reevaluating their bus lines, and looks forward to bus services with the new growth of Downtown LA in mind.  Participate in the crucial analysis by submitting your suggestions here or by attending one of the six public open houses during Phase I of the survey.

SP's Newest Mural on Pico&Figueroa Celebrates Special Olympics 2015 Mural

Artist Cryptk Paints in SP, Thanks to Branded Arts

S outh Park BID is proud to announce that a 6th mural was just  added to the neighborhood collection, thanks to Branded Arts!  Artist Cryptik painted a portrait of fighter Muhammad Ali on the wall on the corner of Pico and Figueroa.  The portrait, overlaid with inspirational words, will commemorate the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games coming to Los Angeles this summer.  Learn more about Cryptik and his beautiful art by following him @CRYPTK.

With six murals now completed and a utility box art project underway, the community art  collection  is growing every day-- in large part thanks to partnerships with art organizations like the DoArt Foundation. If you snap a picture of any mural in South Park, be sure to tag it #SPDoesArt!

South Park Development Continues to Gain International Attention

One of the priorities of the South Park BID is to attract retail of benefit to both residents and visitors. Jessica Mandelbaum, Director of Retail & Real Estate, helped put South Park on the global map at  this year's high-profile ICSC Real Estate Convention (RECon) conference in Las Vegas--the annual global convention for the retail industry that provides networking and deal making opportunities for retail real estate professionals from around the world. As one of 35,000 attendees, Mandelbaum met with  companies representing retailers such as J.Crew, Topshop,   Billabong, Kate Spade, Panera Bread, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Jersey Mikes, and more, to make sure that South Park was on the top of their lists of places their companies need to be!

Along with Mandelbaum's attendance at ICSC RECon, South Park's growing reputation as a hub of intense development and real estate activity was complemented  in a  two-page spread in the May 2015 edition of  Chain Store Age , the nation's leading provider of retail news and analysis for retail headquarter executives . This issue was also featured at the ICSC RECon in Las Vegas.

The South Park BID and Chain Store Age are partnering on a summer  retail  tour to showcase the opportunities in the neighborhood, as well as those across Downtown LA.  If you are a retailer who is interested in being involved, click here to ensure you receive an invitation and check out our commercial vacancies page for more opportunities.

City Council Economic Development Committee Wants DTLA Input 6/18

Street vending impacts Downtown LA and South Park very acutely, relating to issues of public health, trash, maintenance, safety, and the health of local businesses.  Should it be legalized, it must be efficiently and effectively regulated.

Councilmembers Price and Huizar, who authored the motion and represent South Park together, need to hear our opinions on the matter.

Please continue to weigh in on this important matter and join City Council representatives at one or all of the following meetings:

  • Thursday, June 11: 6 - 8 PM, Van Nuys CIty Hall
  • Thursday, June 18: 6- 8 PM, Los Angeles City Hall
  • Thursday, June 25: 6 - 8 PM, CD 9 Constituent Services Center

Thank you to the South Park stakeholders who attended the DLANC street vending meeting on May 27. Because of our presence, no action was taken at that time.

South Park Initiative Brings Attention to Spike in Downtown Bike Thefts

Bike thefts in downtown have soared nearly 60% in the past year. That means Central City riders are on pace to have more than 400 bikes stolen in 2015.

Through a robust partnership with LAPD, South Park is working to reduce the number of bike thefts in the Downtown LA area by launching a pilot program for registering bicycles. The program, along with LAPD's  proactive "Lock it, hide it, keep it" campaign on social media, should help prevent and recover stolen bicycles.

Spearheaded by our security program manager, Sergio Urena, the South Park Business Improvement District's efforts were highlighted in an article by the 'Downtown News'

To register your bike, please contact Sergio Urena  or find our friendly kiosk at the many events around South Park.
Convention Center Redesign Competition LACC

South Park Advocates For Integration and Use of Public Space

Despite setbacks with Los Angeles City's proposed Farmer's Field NFL stadium project, the city continues to move forward with redeveloping the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC).

As an international tourist destination located here in South Park, the BID recognizes the potential that a vibrant convention center brings to the district. Representatives of the BID attended a June 2 public meeting to express thoughts on an integrated public space that serves neighborhood needs, such as a farmer's market.

Winners are expected to be announced at the end of the month. The South Park BID looks forward to the results and will continue to apprise stakeholders of any developments.

South Park Continues the Conversation Around Street Trees Best Practices

The South Park BID has been meeting regularly with the Mayor's Office, Councilmembers Curren Price and Jose Huizar's respective offices, and various city departments. The discussions are centered around determining the best way to plant new trees, maintain current trees, and meet developer requirements in a way that continues to benefit the district community. We'll keep you updated as the conversation continues!

CoCo Fresh
Enjoy Fresh Drink Specials All Summer Long

Founded in Taipei, Taiwan, CoCo Fresh has nearly 2,000 locations worldwide and is reputed to be the largest boba tea store chain globally. What is boba, you ask?

Boba is a reference to the tapioca pearls or tapioca balls derived from the starch of the cassava root, as well as the drink itself. The drink, also referred to as bubble tea, comes in many flavors, most popularly in the form of milk tea--which is exactly what it sounds like: milk and your choice of deliciously flavored tea.

The popularity of the drink is taking off around the world. We are ecstatic to welcome CoCo Fresh into the neighborhood and co-host our August Green Carpet together. For the month of June, CoCo Fresh is having a seasonal buy one tropical special, get the second half off, so if you haven't tried it yet, now's the perfect time to try it--and bring a friend!
