SP's Newest Mural Enhances Olympic & Flower CASEMural

Artist CASE Paints in SP, Thanks to Do Art Foundation, Hotel Figueroa & 1010 Development Corporation

S outh Park BID is proud to announce that a 5th mural was just  added to the neighborhood collection, thanks to the BID's partnership with the Do Art Foundation!  German artist, CASE, painted two adjacent walls on 1010 Development Corporation's Hope Village and Villa Flores, on the corner of Olympic and Flower.  The design of hands, characteristic of CASE's art, represent community, togetherness, and neighborhood warmth.  Learn more about CASE and his beautiful art by following him @case_maclaim.

The pair of murals was made possible by the generous support of the 1010 Development Corporation, and its dedication of the space.  CASE's stay in South Park was accommodated by the historic Hotel Figueroa, eager to support art in our community.  The BID and the community owe a huge thanks to both of these entities for their incredible gifts and helping bring this project to fruition.

This pair of murals is part of a larger public art initiative created through a collaboration with the Do Art Foundation, which helps bring art to communities around the world.  With five murals now completed and a utility box art project underway, the community art collection is growing every day.  If you snap a picture of any mural in South Park, be sure to tag it #SPDoesArt!

Councilmember Huizar's New Motions for DTLA Huizar

SPBID's Alley & Tree Plans Included in Pedestrian-Friendly Concepts

Councilmember Huizar of Council District 14 recently introduced four motions which aim to enhance the pedestrian experience in Downtown LA.  Two of the motions focus on collaborative efforts of the Councilmemeber and the South Park BID, targeting enhancements to local alleys and street trees.

The first motion is a call to formalize a green alley program in the city, drawing from the South Park BID's Green Alleys in South Park Visioning Report and efforts to make LA's alleys more activated.  The second is a call to the Bureau of Street Services' Urban Forestry Division to work with the South Park BID on our street tree palette for the neighborhood.  We're excited to collaborate with the City and developers as we bring consistent, beautiful, and sustainable trees into the neighborhood together, and enliven our alleys and paseos.

Additional motions include requesting a report on Downtown LA's street configuration and pedestrian safety, as well as expansion of the pedestrian "head start" program.  The South Park BID is thrilled to continue working with the Councilmember and his team on moving these pedestrian-enhancement initiatives forward.

Surge in South Park Brings Up Discussion on Public Investment

It's an exciting time to be in South Park, with multiple projects in construction and many more planned to start soon.

However, as developers spend billions on individual projects, what can the city do to ensure the public elements of the neighborhood are taken care of as well?

recent editorial in the L.A. Downtown News calls on city officials to act, discussing the need for job creation, public infrastructure improvements, and a special focus on the neighborhood given this unique time in the area's history.  With such intense growth in the private sector, at the neighborhood will need upgraded public amenities to match the demand of the increasing population.

In order to address these concerns, the South Park BID has convened two meetings with Metro to discuss upgrades to the Pico Station, and reached out to LADOT on their reevaluation of the DASH buses.  The BID also addressed infrastructure issues, completing 800 sidewalk repairs in January 2015 by partnering with city departments, Councilmember Huizar, and a private repair company.  The key to bringing projects like these to fruition is collaboration among all sectors, which the South Park BID is happy to facilitate.

The LA real estate market is exciting, but difficult to navigate and not always profitable.  Why would foreign investors want a financial stake in a market that even the most seasoned developers find difficult to navigate? As it turns out, Los Angeles' real estate market is hot, hot, hot for foreign investors - and has witnessed significant inflows of overseas capital in recent years.

City Council Economic Development Committee Wants DTLA Input 6/25

Share your thoughts on sidewalk vending in Los Angeles at four community meetings in May and June, with one in Downtown LA on June 25.  In late 2014, Councilmembers Price and Huizar proposed a motion to legalize sidewalk vending.  While the Economic Development Committee of City Council discussed the motion in December, it was clear that moving forward would require more research, and feedback from the people of Los Angeles.

Street vending impacts Downtown LA and South Park in very acutely, relating to issues of public health, trash, maintenance, safety, and the health of local businesses.  Should it be legalized, it must be efficiently and effectively regulated.

Please join City Council representatives at one or all of the following meetings:

  • Thursday, May 28: 6 - 8 PM, Boyle Heights City Hall
  • Thursday, June 11: 6 - 8 PM, Van Nuys CIty Hall
  • Thursday, June 18: 6- 8 PM, Los Angeles City Hall
  • Thursday, June 25: 6 - 8 PM, CD 9 Constituent Services Center
