South Park & LASC Release Green Alley Report

New Form of Public Open Space Considered for the NeighborhoodGreenAlleys

Green Alleys LASC Report

The South Park BID is excited to present out "Green Alleys in South Park-Visioning Report," an effort to redefine and activate public space, which came from a partnership with the LA Sustainability Collaborative. With a focus on creating a robust "green alley initiative" for the South Park area, the the goal is to provide a roadmap for local developers, city departments, and third party groups to work together on cultivating this new form of open space.

The report is a follow-up study to the Urban Land Institute Technical Assistance Panel (TAP) Study of South Park, which was completed in Fall 2013.  In the TAP Study, the establishment of green alleys was suggested as a way to better connect people across South Park's long urban blocks, as well as a way to create more flexible-use space in a park and public-space poor area.

Taking these initial studies into consideration, the creation of the Green Alleys Report was initiated this year by LASC and the South Park BID, and was written by graduate student Fellows Alexander Jung of UCLA and Clare Eberle of USC.  The Fellows were assisted by the following expert Technical Assistance Committee: Tanner Blackman, Council District 14; Sarah MacPherson Beasley, Hollywood Property Owners Alliance; Mark Wareham, Mack Urban; Elizabeth Wendall, Gensler Architects.

As a myriad of development projects are currently scheduled for the South Park area, the opportunity to create better alley environments is coming at a perfect time.  The BID will be taking this report, and turning it into an action plan for 2015, which will also be shared with developers and the city departments.

Sidewalk Repairs Begin in the DistrictSidewalk

Councilman Huizar of CD 14 Helps South Park on Hope & Pico

On October 17, crews came to take away and replace the broken sidewalk on the west side of Hope St. just north of Pico. The South Park BID worked with Councilmember Huizar and his staff on this endeavor, who made the repair possible at no cost to the BID.

This sidewalk repair is one of many coming soon to the district, as the South Park BID has been working diligently on a plan to saw cut uneven sidewalks throughout the area.  This plan will be heard today at the Board of Public Works.

As developers will be repairing and replacing the sidewalks in front of their projects, the BID focus on the sidewalks  needing help in between developments.

We'll keep you updated as the sidewalks in South Park become better and better!

New Banners & Billboard Grace South Park

Huge Thanks to Packard Lofts for Sharing Their Space on OlympicBannersnBillboard

Have you seen the new billboard welcoming everyone to your community?  Thanks to the generosity of Venice Investments, owners of residential building Packard Lofts, everyone coming into South Park from the north know they've entered our neighborhood.

The sign is 34 feet tall, and is located on the east-facing wall of Packard Lofts, facing the intersection of Olympic Blvd. and Grand Ave.

Street banners have also been installed along Grand Ave., and are being placed this week on Flower St. near the Pico Metro station.

These projects are both part of a larger branding campaign, which was created by the South Park BID to foster more community and district identity.  With the tagline of "This is Our Time, This is Our Place", the BID's goal is to show both locals and visitors the potential for engagement and connectivity that is possible in our neighborhood.  We've also been on the radio - hear our recent KCRW spot here.

Learn more about Packard Lofts, which provided the space for the billboard, here.

More Trees to Be Planted Across DistrictTreeWalk

SPBID Meets with City Departments and Specialists on Trees

The South Park BID has been working on a plan to bring more trees across the neighborhood.  Our maintenance crew, from LA Conservation Corps, has mapped at all of the empty tree wells and potential places for new trees in the area.

Last month, our team met with LACC, City departments including the Environmental Services Group, and landscape architects from Melendrez and Mia Lehrer & Associates.  Using LACC's list and walking the entire district, the team looked at all empty wells and places for potential wells.

We now have 18 locations for new trees, as well as a palette for future trees.  Letters have been mailed to all the property owners, who must respond if they do not wish to have the tree planted near their property.

If you are a property owner and interested in having a tree planted in front of your property, please email us!

Be a Local Hero - Help Stop Illegal DumpingBulktItems

Help Your Community Keep the Streets and Alleys Clean

Attention South Park! Our clean team has noticed an excess of bulky items left in the alleys of our community. The City is responsible for picking up bulky items - all you have to do is call and leave your belongings on the curb. Once you have called the City, please contact us, and we will assist when necessary.  Click here for all bulky item pickup info.

While we are here to keep the district clean and safe, when you dispose of bulky items in the alleys, it takes time and often multiple trips with our trucks to remove these items, our time and ability to pressure wash sidewalks, empty trash cans, and do regular maintenance is diminished.

If you see illegal dumping, SPEAK UP!  California Penal Code 374.3 makes illegal dumping on public and private property punishable by a fine of up to $10,000. Also, pursuant to Section 117555 of the California health and Safety Code, a person who dumps illegally is punishable by up to six months in jail.  Report it by calling 1-888-8-DUMPING or report it confidentially online here.  You can receive up to $1000 in rewards!

On March 28, 2015, California Hospital Medical Center (CHMC) will host the 3rd Annual Heart of the City 5K, an exciting event that will draw close to two thousand walkers, runners, and volunteers to the heart of Los Angeles to support an essential community resource.

The race will give participants the opportunity to experience the blossoming downtown along an exhilarating, dog-friendly course, culminating in a race expo on the hospital's campus.  I invite you to be our partner in this great community-wide effort by becoming an event committee member.

Help support this community event by joining us on the event planning committee!  You will have the satisfaction of being part of a great fundraising event that helps

provide the high-quality, patient-centered healthcare-available to all in need, regardless of their ability to pay-that has always been critical to the safety and vitality of this community we all share.
