A new restaurant opens in South Park DTLA at the corner of 12th and Grand Ave,  403 W. 12th St . Barcito LA celebrated its Grand Opening on Tuesday, September 8. H ours are 5 PM to 12 AM Tuesday through Thursday, and Friday and Saturday 5 PM - 2 AM.

The tapas-style menu focuses on Argentinian specialties from chef Chuck Abair, featuring everything from empanadas to asado to veal sweetbreads. Owner Andrea Borgen, who used to work for Hillstone Restaurant Group before moving onto Danny Meyer's Blue Smoke in New York, draws inspiration from childhood trips to Buenos Aires, Argentina. The restaurant was designed by Andrea's family member, who focused on fusing the traditional elements into a contemporary space.

The South Park BID is thrilled to welcome Josh Kreger to the team on September 17, 2015 as the new Director of Real Estate and Planning, replacing Jessica Mandelbaum. Josh will be spearheading economic development efforts for the BID including retail attraction and key infrastructure projects. 
 
Prior to joining the South Park BID, Josh worked at Jones Lang LaSalle, Kosmont Companies and the Downtown Center Business Improvement District (DCBID) in Downtown Los Angeles. In his previous roles, he tracked new Downtown LA development projects, produced quarterly market reports covering the residential, office, retail and hotel markets, and worked to attract new business and investment to Downtown LA.  Josh holds a Juris Doctor from the University of San Diego School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Maryland. 

A big thank you to Jessica Mandelbaum, who worked for nearly two years with the BID, leaving behind the Green Carpet Event series, the commercial vacancies page, and much more. South Park New Mural Completed  Mural
 New Public Art on Hope St. by Aly Timbuctustate
 
  

On August 11th, community members joined together for a public meeting on the proposed artwork and installation timeline for a new mural in South Park. The mural artist, Aly Timbuctustate, completed the mural on September 1, 2015.  Timbuctustate's mural is the 8th in the South Park district.
 
The new mural is the next step in a formal effort between the South Park BID and the  Do Art Foundation. The South Park BID will continue to prioritize improving the community through art and culture.

Board Elections, LACC Redesign, & More!
 
 

Save the date for the next South Park Stakeholders Group Board Meeting on Thursday, October 22 from 8:30 AM - 10:00 AM.   South Park Board and Committee meetings are open to the public. 

Change of Location: The October Board Meeting will be hosted at the Los Angeles Convention Center at 1201 S. Figueroa Street. Free parking will be available to meeting guests. 

The meeting will feature South Park Stakeholder Group Board Elections. Other topics will include: the LA Convention Center redesign contract, economic impact study presentation from an outside consultant, hotel RFI update, and a financing plan update from the CAO. Don't miss out!

Hotel Transylvania Screening & Fun Events 

 
 
Join the South Park BID for the next Family Day at L.A. LIVE. Dracula, Frankenstein and their spooky friends will take over Regal Cinemas L.A. South Park's Hotel Figueroa Hosts Public Art Talk  ArtTalk
The First Event of a Series Featuring Varenye
 
 

The South Park Business Improvement District (BID), L.A. Fashion District BID, Do Art Foundation, Think Tank Gallery, and The Do LaB hosted the first event of the Public Art Talk Series on September 10, 2015. The Art Talk took place at the  Hotel Figueroa in South Park, LA as an extension of the Downtown LA Art Walk. 

This month's featured artist was Russian artist group, Varenye. The conversation was moderated by contemporary American painter, Kimberly Brooks .

Take Action on Homelessness in Los Angeles Homeless

This year, City Council created the Homelessness and Poverty Committee, spearheaded by Councilmembers Jose Huizar and Marqueece Harris-Dawson, to address the ever-growing crisis of homelessness in Los Angeles. Community members are encouraged to attend these meetings and offer public comment on how homelessness is affecting you.

DASH & LADOT Upgrades in Store  DASH
City Reviews Bus Systems After Extensive Survey
 
 
 
After months of collecting community feedback, LADOT Transit Services Bureau  is now reviewing DASH and other LADOT survey feedback.  DOT hopes to finish the study and present recommendations to LA City Council by early 2016. 

The South Park BID worked hard to engage the Downtown LA community to recommend a select list of improvements for the DASH routes, such as increased routes and frequency. To view the full list of BID recommendations, click here

South Park August Board Meeting
The South Park Stakeholders Group hosted its quarterly Board Meeting on Thursday, August 27, 2015.  Special guest speakers included Jessica Borek, Associate with Rodriguez Strategies, and Dave Whitton, who presented on a new restaurant in South Park, Prank Bar below Luma Lofts, with a potential grand opening in January 2016.

On September 9, 2015, the South Park District Identity and Marketing Committee (DISI), a division of the South Park Board of Directors, met to discuss the proposed South Park Public Art Strategic Plan, the growing exposure of the new South Park website, the dismantling of the South Park app, and more.

Homelessness & Poverty Committee Meetings
On September 9, 2015, LA City Council's Homelessness and Poverty Committee convened to discuss issues surrounding housing for the homeless. Community members voiced their concerns about the ever-growing issue of homelessness across Los Angeles. Some City Council members suggested that homelessness be declared a State-of-Emergency, while others recommended long-term solutions for the persistent crisis at hand.

On August 26, community members convened at the Homelessness and Poverty Committee meeting at City Hall to discuss Section 56.11 of the Los Angles Municipal Code related to the storage of personal property in the public's right-of-way including streets, sidewalks, and alleys. The community voiced opinions both for and against motion 56.11, and proposed amendments to motion 56.11, during public comment.

Non-Profit Helps 1st Generation College Students Ultreya
Kid City Hope Place Hosts Fundraiser 

Kid City Hope Place, located in South Park LA, hosted its "Ultreya" fundraiser event on September 2, 2015. The funds support Kid City's  continued efforts to provide resources for first-generation college students. Kid City is a program of the Los Angeles United Methodist Urban Foundation and First United Methodist Church of Los Angeles. 
 
The BID was proud to attend the Ultreya event and help Kid City Hope Place realize their fundraising goal of $30,000.

SP Clean Team's Monthly Focus CleanFocus

Maintenance Crews Keep South Park Clean 


 

Starting in 2015, South Park's Clean Team focuses on a monthly special project in order to increase the overall cleanliness of the neighborhood.

 

This month, the Clean Team focused on cleaning alleys.

 

Earlier this year, the Clean Team pressure-washed every trash can in the district, removed weeds from all local tree wells, removed graffiti, touched up walls with paint, and cleaned the utility boxes.

 

Stay tuned for information on special projects from the South Park BID Clean Team in the coming months.

SP Safety Ambassadors Arrive in a Time of Need

On August 22 after a late night concert at the STAPLES Center, a community member called the South Park 24/7 hour dispatch hotline when her car engine would not start. South Park Ambassadors Gonzalez and Funes located the community member; Gonzales helped determine what was wrong with the car and ultimately jump-started its dead battery, while Funes took the community member's 10 year old daughter to the restroom.
 
The community member expressed her gratitude to the Ambassadors and passed her story on to the South Park BID staff.
 
Thank you to the South Park Clean and Safe Team Ambassadors for their continued support to residents and visitors alike in an effort to keep the community clean and safe.
