Why is there an

extra candle on our altar?

Father Jeff's family will be home soon from his sabbatical. All of us miss them but are regularly reminded they will soon return.

There is a lighted candle on the altar for every service they are away. Father Jeff also has a candle that we gave them to remind them of our bond to each other and our special prayer that they make a safe return home to us.

Please look for the candle at our next service and keep all their family in your daily prayers.

What a glorious day August 9th will be to celebrate our renewed commitment to each other and their safe return home.

BackSnacks

The Outreach Committee has become involved in a new project for the upcoming school year. There are children in the county who go home on weekends and have little to eat until they are back at school Monday morning. The BackSnacks project is an attempt to show God's love and care by proving two healthful breakfasts, lunches, dinners on weekends to identified children's families. This is in cooperation with other county churches.

St. Nicholas has been asked to be responsible for the collection of snacks for 3-4 children. Through contributions of snacks and monetary contributions (that will be used to buy snacks), snacks can be sent home every Friday throughout the whole school year.

The Outreach Committee would like to begin this venture at the Blessing of the Backpacks on August 2.

Those wishing to contribute are asked to bring their contribution to the church and place them in the black container in the narthex on July 26 and August 2.

Please see the list of single serving, nonperishable items below. There will also be a backpack for monetary donations. Checks should be made payable to St. Nicholas with "BackSnacks" noted on the memo line. Father Bob will bless our BackSnacks along with the other children's backpacks.

Food items needed: Individual macaroni and cheese, granola bars, fruit cups, individual boxes of cereal, and pop tarts.

As this will be an on-going project, please watch for new lists and chances to contribute throughout the year.

This is a good time to invite a friend to St Nicholas

Jonathan  Daniels

  Pilgrimage on August 15th.

Johnathan Daniels  (March 20, 1939 - August 20, 1965) was an   Episcopal   seminarian and civil rights activist.
In 1965 he was murdered in  Hayneville, Alabama   while in the act of saving a young woman, Ruby Sales, who was a civil rights activist with Johnathan and others.

They both were working in the  Civil Rights Movement   in  Lowndes County registering people to
vote .

In 1991 Daniels was designated as a martyr in the Episcopal church, and is recognized annually. He is memorialized in the Civil Rights Movement and other venues. The Diocese of Alabama and the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast organize an annual pilgrimage to Hayneville - this has been happening for at least 13 years. Many people from the Diocese of Atlanta go.

This year our area Episcopal Churches are arranging for our parish groups to go together. Rt Rev Michael Curry is scheduled  to go - He is our new Presiding Bishop. It is a time of unity and remembrance. The city of Hayneville welcomes and embraces this pilgrimage as well.

More details will be posted about this trip as time gets closer.

CVEM will be taking reservations for travel to the Pilgrimage honoring the 50th Anniversary of Jonathan Daniel's Death in Hayneville on  Aug. 15.
Vans will leave from St. Thomas at 8:15 a.m. and return around 4 p.m.
Box lunches will be catered to All Saints Parish in Montgomery where The Rev. Matthew Grunfeld is rector. Lunches will be $10 for an option of a Hoagie Veggie or Hoagie Club with slaw, chips, cookie, a pickle & a drink (if you would like to purhcase lunch). Bring your $10 cash with you and pay when you check in.
RSVP by Aug. 2 at cvemjubilee.org or call CVEM at 706-327-0400

Steward of the Month for July

David Walker

The vestry would like to recognize this month, our friend David, posthumously, for his extensive body of stewardship work at St. Nicholas. As we grieve with Barbara and their family, we recognize that David leaves a strong St. Nicholas legacy in the fields of diversity, hospitality, and service to the community.

A fearless recruiter, David enlisted the help needed to bring about our new monthly service program at Bright Way Personal Care Home in Pine Mountain. A believer in local community, David sought to strengthen St. Nicholas by sharing our gifts with those unable to come to us. Although David loved music, and sang with the choir, enjoyed planning and serving on the new building committee, and maintained a practical, no-nonsense attitude in his Vestry work, his passion was bringing others to church, or in the case of Bright Way, taking our church to others.

We celebrate David's commitment to those whose lives he reached and to St. Nicholas Episcopal, who was honored to call him a member.

" Well done good and faithful servant!"

Stewardship
Thought of the Month
for July

"Love is faith in action. The two most important questions we can ask ourselves are "Whom do I love?" and "Who loves me?"  We put faith into action by extending our concern for people beyond ourselves. We show our concern for others in our actions and relationships."

Mobile App Installation Instructions

Church members can view the St. Nicholas Church Directory from their iPhone, iPad, Android or Kindle Fire by downloading the free Instant Church Directory Members App.

You may search for "Instant Church Directory" in the Apple App Store, Google Play, or Amazon Appstore, or use this link:

After installation, open the Instant Church Directory icon (it looks like a church).  It will ask for your email address.  If your email address is in our church directory, the program will generate a password for you and email it to you.

This worked great for most, but if you have any problems make sure you first check to see that your email address is in the church directory.
