What a month for our varsity dance team !
  • Advanced to the semi-finals in both the small varsity jazz and pom divisions during the Universal Dance Association National Championship in Orlando
  • Cara Westcott '18 and Katherine Kuchem '18 finished 6th and 15h, respectively, in the Missouri Dance Team Association (MDTA) State Solo Competition at St. Charles High School.
  • Katie Horack '19, Sophie Laposha '19, Ashley Liberto '19, Anna Powell '19, Brooke Schwartz '18, Ashley Stephan '18, Allie Walsh '19, Brooke Westcott '20 and Cara Westcott '18 earned Academic All-State recognition.
  • Finished in first place in both the Division 4 pom and mix performances during the MDTA State Dance Team Championship
  • Named Division 4 State Champions at the MDTA State Dance Team Championship!

UA Bearbotics will compete in their first of two regional FIRST Robotics Competitions in both St. Louis (March 8-9) and Des Moines (March 22-23). Good luck to Elizabeth Edmunds '20 (electrical leader), Anna Gonsalves '19 (promotions leader), Caeley Kates '18 (business leader), Amanda Kohne '18 (safety leader), Emily Reiss '19 (awards leader), Libby Trn '19 (programming leader), Mary Weissert '20 (promotions), Madison Yakstis '18 (mechanical leader), Ali Ziemianski '19 (mechanical) and Kelly Zipfel '20 (strategy leader). In addition to preparing for competition, these students have been sharing their talents with others including students in grades K-4 during the FIRST Lego League Jr. Expo held last month.
Gabby Anderson '20, Abigail Biscan '19, Emerson Brazile '18, Maggie Fix '18, Maria Forsythe '19, Kiley Freesmeier '18, Sophia Hilmes '19, Kathleen Hubeli '19, Natalie McDonald '18, Grace Nolan '19 and Julia Stahlhuth '18 , accompanied by Mrs. Annie Hilmes (French) and Mrs. Caroline Springer (Spanish), will travel to New York during spring break to participate in the 62nd annual Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations . The priority theme for this year addresses the challenges and opportunities in achieving gender equality and the empowerment of rural women and girls, with the review theme of participation in and access of women to the media, and information and communications technologies and their impact on and use as an instrument for the advancement and empowerment of women.
Nataleigh Liddy '20 (finalist in poetry), Gabby Anderson '19 (finalist in storytelling) and Carrie Steingruby '18 (finalist in prose) represented UA during February's Christian Interscholastic Speech League Finals competition (right).

The video about Bissinger's Handcrafted Chocolatier made by Lauren Bernhard '18, Paige Broyles '20, Caroline Kozeny '19 and Kate McDonough '18 was selected as one of five finalists in the Show-Me Manufacturing Video Contest sponsored by the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry . Our UA team presented their plan and prototype for an online marketplace to buy and sell personally-owned UA items during  World Wide Technology's annual STEM Student Forum . Although they did not place this year, we congratulate Reagan Becnel '18, Grace Breeding '19, Megan Catlett '18, Olivia Goldkamp '19, Anna Gonsalves '19, Caeley Kates '18, Sophie Laposha '19, Libby Trn '19, Anna Vuch '19  and  Kelly Zipfel '20 on their outstanding efforts and $1000 award.
The varsity softball team earned Academic All-State recognition for their average team GPA of 3.65. Individual honors were also awarded to Chloe Baize '20, Megan Catlett '18, Grace Eisenbarger '18, Shelby Petrus '19, Maddy Schneider '18 and Abigail Tepen '19 .

Soccer players Allison Hackett '18 (University of Illinois-Springfield), Julia Stahlhuth '18 (Missouri Western State University), and Kaetlin Wurdack '18 (Maryville University) who signed letters of intent on February 4 to continue their athletic careers in college. These seniors are pictured at right with their parents.

Emerson Brazile '18, Emily Broughton '18, Jess Garcia '19, Ellie Kelleher '18, Elissa Schmidt '18 and Kara Steinbrecher '18 made a big splash during the MSHSAA State Swimming & Diving Championships held at the St. Peters Rec Plex in mid-February. Jess advanced to the second day of competition in the 500 freestyle , and the 200 medley relay team of Emerson, Emily, Jess, and Kara set a new UA record of 2:02:41.
The cheer team competed in the Amateur Athletic Union Rumble in the Jungle competition in Collinsville, Illinois, where they placed first in Senior Level 2 and won the Level 2 Grand Champion Award (for earning the highest score out of all level 2 teams) in addition to the Best Dance Award (for earning the highest dance score out of the entire competition)!
The 2018 Missouri High School Racquetball Association State Team Championships were held recently and we congratulate Chloe Weaver '20 (first place, JV1 singles), Jenna Mikitin '19 & Natalie Bianchino '19 (third place, varsity doubles), Abby Schaeffer '20 (third place, JV3 singles 1), and Morgan Jones '21 (third place, JV3 singles 2). Chloe went on to compete in the National High School Racquetball Championships in Portland, Oregon. She is pictured here with coaches Mrs. Debbie Miller and Mr. Kevin Reid (English).
Dancer Cara Westcott '18 is a semi-finalist in the 8th Annual St. Louis Teen Talent Competition sponsored by the Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation . She is one of 46 selected to advance from an initial field of 100 high school acts. Semi-finalist acts include singers, musicians, dancers, a baton twirler, aerialist, juggler, and musical theatre performers, and acts are judged on technical ability, interpretation, stage presence and originality. The semi-finals will be held on March 26 at Kirkwood High School with the finals at the Fox Theatre on April 28. Read more here.

What's happening in the classroom?

Mrs. Hilmes' advisement , led by Katie Antonacci '18 , made Valentines for residents at Nazareth Living Center which will be delivered after school. Next week her Honors French III students will prepare and enjoy a five-course French meal at the Dierberg's School of Cooking.
Abigail Lawhorn and Margaret Houghland  represented our  Leadership for Diversity Team at the Diversity Prayer Service  held at St. Louis University High School last month.
The second annual spring performing arts assembly was held recently featuring our instrumental ensemble and drum duet, entire dance classes as well as solos, theatrical monologues, a choral presentation, and solo performances of both opera and show tunes, in addition to the work of our student choreographers and stage crew. It can be a challenge to perform before your peers, and we congratulate our students on their confidence, hard work and stage presence.
