Dear Valwood Family,

I hope you and your loved ones weathered hurricane Michael safely. After assessing road conditions, property damage, and power outages, we made the decision for school to remain closed tomorrow, Friday, October 12. We will reopen Monday, October 15. Again, our top priority is the safety of our students, employees, and families. Thank you for your continued support and understanding!

This issue of the Valwood View is an abbreviated one due to the hurricane. Additional information about upcoming events will be sent out next week. If you are able to, please stop by Panera Bread for the Valwood Fine Arts event tonight, more details are below.

Volleyball (23-1)
The Valwood Valiant Volleyball team continues its dominance in region play with another win over the Frederica Academy Knights on Thursday, October 4th . The Knights were looking to be the first team in Region 2 to notch a win versus the Valiants, but the Valiants were too skilled and overpowered the Knights with tough serves and solid defense. The Valiants made quick work of the Knights by winning the first two games 9-25 and 7-25. The final game challenged the Valiants, but the final score had them on top 17-25. Standouts for the Valiants included senior Erin Moss with 4 aces and 4 kills, Sophomore Kennedy Kimbro with 7 aces and 3 kills, Junior Gracyn Sanderlin with 5 kills and 2 aces, and Makayla Yates leading the defense with 3 digs. The Valiants improve to 23-1 overall and 7-0 in the region. Their final home game was scheduled for Friday, October 12 th at 5 pm vs FPCA for the Region Championship.

Safety Update - Hurricane Michael (final update)
From Lowndes County EMA - We will continue to monitor local conditions and conduct assessments to determine the level of damage and any ongoing needs for assistance to allow our community to return to pre-disaster conditions. We have approximately 10,000 residents in Lowndes County without power. Crews are going to begin working to restore power as quickly as humanly possible but everyone should understand that due to the devastation experienced by all of our neighbors West of us, plus the uncertainty of the extent of damage and required repairs it may be a while before everyone’s power is completely restored. Please exhibit as much patience as you can and know that every available crew is working as hard as possible to get all utilities restored. If you are aware of any issues, please let us know so we can make sure it is properly documented and any available assistance is properly referred. A huge thanks to everyone who played a vital role in our community’s successful preparation in anticipation of this storm. Although we were extremely fortunate that the local impacts were nowhere close to the severity levels predicted, even if they had been I feel we would have fared exceptionally well thanks to the tremendous efforts put forth on the part of each of you and our citizens. Without every member of our team doing their part, even minimal impacts would prove devastating. I am extremely fortunate to be part of such an amazing group of service minded individuals and a supportive community. If you know someone who responded or assisted in any way either to prepare for or respond to Hurricane Michael please let them know their service is greatly appreciated. That is not why they do what they do but everyone appreciates recognition for a job well done. Again, thank you for all your hard work and I look forward to continuing to work together with all of you as we fully restore our community and prepare for the next big emergency.
Valwood Parents Association Update

Volunteers are still needed for Extreme Team Day!

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help with Extreme Team Day on November 9th! For our new Valwood families, Extreme Team Day is our lower school academic field day. Students are put on teams and work together to solve various challenges. Parents explain the directions and observe each group as they attempt to complete the assigned tasks. This is a fun way to get involved! Extreme Team Day takes place in Rodgers Performance Hall. Students in Kindergarten through second grade participate from 8:30-10:30 am , and students in third through fifth grade participate from 12:30-2:30 pm on Friday, November 9th. Pre-K students do not participate in Extreme Team Day. If you are interested in helping with Extreme Team Day and haven't already signed up, please contact Tori Holmes ( [email protected] ) or Julie Godbee ( [email protected] ).

If you are a middle or upper school parent and have an Extreme Team Day t-shirt that you are not using anymore, please contact Tori Holmes.

Ella Grace Spell's Charity: Water Birthday Campaign
Many of us have no idea what it's like to be thirsty. We have plenty of water to drink -- even the water in our toilets is clean! But many people around the world don’t have that luxury. Every day, about 1,400 children die from diseases caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation. But it doesn’t have to be that way. There are simple solutions like drilled wells, spring protections and BioSand filters that help provide clean water to communities around the world.

I started this fundraising campaign to help charity: water build these types of projects around the world, and I'm looking for anyone who can help me. Please donate to my campaign -- anything you can give is a huge help. 100% of the money will be used to build clean water projects, and when they’re complete, charity: water will send us photos and GPS coordinates so we can see the exact community we helped.

HISTORY BOOKS ARE STILL AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE

Emily Anderson has written about Valwood's first 50 years in an entertaining book celebrating the rich history of our institution. In addition to her research and personal memories of her time at Valwood, Mrs. Anderson has also collected memoirs from former headmasters, students and parents. Colorful accounts of Valwood's infancy along with stories and pictures throughout the years portray how Valwood evolved without losing the Valiant Spirit it retains today. Get your copy in the Spirit Store for $25.

Click here to order your copy today or complete this FORM and turn it into Crane Hall.
