Girl Talk is a peer-to-peer mentoring program that offers high school girls the opportunity to mentor middle school girls during their most formative years. Meetings are a safe space for all girls to share and gain perspective on common experiences that have the potential to make a permanent impact on their lives. Valwood's chapter was started in 2017.

Valwood Girl Talk Chapter leaders attend summer camp
|
Sophomores Smith Shaw and Clancy Claire Perry volunteered as mentors at Girl Talk Camp over the summer. The camp is a week-long day camp in Atlanta that offers rising fourth through rising eighth grade girls the unique fun, friendship, and possibilities that only Girl Talk can offer! Campers have the opportunity to meet and be mentored by current Girl Talk chapter leaders and alumni and to learn from uplifting female speakers throughout the week. They also participate in a variety of activities that inspire confidence and creativity as well as community service projects that foster a passion for giving back. Valwood students Campbell and Bella Shaw attended as campers. Valwood Girl Talk is held on Wednesdays, during 8
th
period in Ms. McLeod's room; all athletics are excused.

Volleyball (10-1)
“Chewis”. It’s a nonsensical word, but it is the word the Valiant volleyball team used to defeat the Sherwood Christian Eagles last Thursday night in three straight sets (25-11,25-20,25-14). The Valiants rolled past the Eagles in the first set, showing up to total team effort. Combined, the Valiants generated 6 aces, 13 kills, and 2 blocks, earning 21 of their 25 points. In the second set, the Valiants lost some of their momentum in the first half of the game. Exchanging points back and forth with the Eagles, the Valiants struggled to pull away because of several errors. That’s when Sophomore Korrine Johnson yelled, “Chewis”. To outsiders the word may be a mystery, but to the Valiants, “Chewis” is a reminder to let go of your past mistakes and move forward. From then on, the Valiants regained control of the set and the match. Leading contributors from the Valiants include: Senior Erin Moss with 20 kills, 4 blocks, and 5 digs. Sophomore setter Kennedy Kimbro earned 35 assists and 4 digs. Freshman Anna Alvarado totaled 6 aces. The Valiants improve their record to 10-1, and their next game will be tonight, September 6 in Hinesville against FPCA.
Story by senior, Erin Moss.

Football (3-0)
The Valwood Valiants put on an offensive clinic in the first half as they romped past the Notre Dame Irish 35-14 on Friday. The Valiants (3-0) scored all 35 of their points in the first half for their 40th home victory in their last 44 games at Goddard Field.
Looking to preserve themselves after a physical matchup with Frederica Academy last week, the Valiants accomplished their goal of cleaning up mistakes and getting backups into the game early against the Irish. Valwood players of the week are Caleb Burns (offense), Bay Moorman (defense) and Robbie Evans (special teams). The Valiants host the North Florida Christian Eagles tomorrow night. NFC has the distinction of being one of the three teams to defeat the Valiants last season, winning 18-13 in Tallahassee last September.

Cross Country
Valwood Cross Country makes running fun! On September 1st, the varsity team, part of the middle school team and a few parents competed in the Jekyll Island 5k. The course was beautiful and challenging. Competing for varsity was Brenna Clark, Madeline Castor, Jolie Green, Jordan Green and Millie Hollis. Representing the middle school was Louden Castor, Wesley Clark and Jaxson Routsong. Louden placed second in his age division! All of our teams are still working hard and making gains!
The Valwood Cross Country team invites you to run with them this weekend at Four Freedoms Trail in Pinetta, Florida. They will meet at 6:45 am and begin running at 7: 30 am. There is an out and back course marked for 1 mile, 2 miles and a 5k. Call Coach Debbie Green for more information 229-454-6327.

Softball (6-3)
Clutch hits in extra innings on Wednesday brought another victory for the Valwood Valiants over the Brooks County Trojans. The Valiants’ bats were hot as Graceigh Booth, Mary Clare Martin and Darcee Brown all earned one hit. Bri Fosdick, Natalie Rojas and Ansley Bennett had two hits each. Lindsey Browning and Ansley Haskard led the team with three hits each. Darcee Brown pitched all eight innings allowing four runs on nine hits. The Valiants are now 6-3 and will begin region play next week as they face Brookwood in Thomasville on Tuesday and are home to host Southland Academy on Thursday.

HISTORY BOOKS ARE STILL AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE
Emily Anderson has written about Valwood's first 50 years in an entertaining book celebrating the rich history of our institution. In addition to her research and personal memories of her time at Valwood, Mrs. Anderson has also collected memoirs from former headmasters, students and parents. Colorful accounts of Valwood's infancy along with stories and pictures throughout the years portray how Valwood evolved without losing the Valiant Spirit it retains today. Get your copy in the Spirit Store for $25.

Once a Valiant, always a Valiant!
|
Twenty-three years ago I graduated from a little school on Gornto Road with seventeen (17) other classmates. My high school years were some of the best years of my life. I spent them as a cheerleader, homecoming queen, office aide to the best principal (Emily Anderson) and was involved in numerous clubs offered at Valwood. In my opinion, that is what makes Valwood so unique. You can be involved in so many extra curricular activities, in addition to getting a quality education. That quality education led me to graduate from Emory University and later getting my doctorate in physical therapy from the University of Miami.
Although Valwood has changed a lot in twenty-three years, the values are the same. When it came time to enroll my two kids in school, the choice was a no-brainer. I want Cort and Penny Belle to experience the same things I was able to do, on top of getting the best education. When I drop my kids off in the morning, I know they are in the best hands with the most loving staff of teachers, coaches and administrators. Their teachers are a phone call, email or text away. Valwood has become a second family for the Kurries. Go Valiants!!
