The Valwood View
"Connecting home and school"
Upper School Student Council officers and representatives.
Dear Valwood Family,

It has been a busy week filled with student and family activities. We've had yearbook pictures taken, sporting events, student council elections, service projects and more. I have been so impressed with the student council election speeches in the middle and upper school. Parents and teachers should be proud because our hallways are filled with leaders and public speakers with bright futures ahead of them.

In this issue you will find helpful links, upcoming events, student spotlights, important announcements, safety & security updates, ways to give back and more, so be sure to scroll all the way through.

Have a great week!

Sincerely,
John L. Davis, Sr.
Head of School

Summer in Waldsee : A German Language Immersion Program
by George Tidmore
During the summer, I participated in a German immersion program for four weeks. My interest in learning German began with the “Geography Fair” in the sixth grade. I was assigned Germany and became intrigued by its culture, history, scenery, politics, and language. I decided that, in order to most authentically experience the German culture, I would learn the language. While studying with a German professor from Valdosta State University during the eighth grade, I began to search for an immersion program in which I could advance my German language skills. Eventually, I found a Concordia Language Villages German immersion “village” called Waldsee , which is located in Bemidji, Minnesota.

Athletics Update

IMPORTANT: All volleyball games scheduled for Saturday, September 15, have been cancelled due to the Hurricane. We will send out new dates and times once available.
Volleyball (12-1)
Tuesday night, Valwood Volleyball traveled to Tallahassee and swept the Community Community Christian Chargers 25-22, 25-21, 27-25. In the first set, the Chargers challenged the Valiants with their tough serves, holding the Valiants at 4 points for the first 13 serves of the game. Soon the Valiants came charging from behind to regain control of the game, assisted by Senior Erin Moss's 12 kills. Set 2 began much like Set 1 with the Valiants trailing behind the Community Christian Chargers. After a timeout, Freshman Outside Ellie Griner registered a kill which jumpstarted a 7-0 run for the Valiants. Carrying the momentum from Set 2, the Valiants dominated the Chargers for the first half of the third set, garnering 6 aces and 18 kills. The Chargers crept from behind, threatening to steal a Valiant victory, but the Chargers could not withstand the force of Junior Gracyn Sanderlin's two crater-making kills. The Valiants improve their record to 12-1.

Come out tonight for their first home game against Sherwood at 6 pm, let's fill the gym!

Story by senior, Erin Moss.
Football (3-1)
Turnovers, busted protections and fatigue setting in on a weary defense — nothing seemed to go right as the Valwood Valiants couldn't keep pace in a 31-7 loss to North Florida Christian Eagles on Friday night. Valwood players of the week are Ashton Moorman (offense), Blaine Cooper (defense) and Zach Paulk (special teams).

Up next, t he Valiants travel to Newnan Friday night to face the undefeated Heritage Hawks (4-0).
Cross Country
Saturday the cross country teams, parents, and a few friends met at Four Freedoms Trail in Pinetta, Florida. A great time was had by all! Lots of food, fun, and fellowship.

The runners divided up and participated in a 1 mile, 2 mile and a 5k race based on their age group. The runners did great and then relaxed and had fun climbing trees, skateboarding, playing volleyball, soccer, and cornhole. We all had so much fun and we plan to create another opportunity like this one soon. Please watch for our next event.
Softball (7-3)
The Lady Valiants started the game strong Tuesday against Brookwood School to claim their first region victory in a 17-1 win. Ansley Bennett was on the mound for Valwood striking out 6 and capitalizing on many key defensive plays. She only allowed 3 hits. The Valiants return home against their region rival Southland Academy Thursday at 4:30.
They are 1-0 in the region.

Story prepared by the varsity softball team.

Safety Update - Hurricane Florence

Thursday, September 13, 2018 at 9 a.m. from Lowndes EMA

T he latest forecast track for Hurricane Florence has it shifting back to the north a little which puts it back closer to the forecasts earlier in the week. It is still expected to make a slight turn to the South once it makes landfall before turning back North and moving off to the Northeast US. Despite decreasing in intensity a little, Florence has increased in size and is still expected to bring devastating storm surge and rainfall to the Carolinas, Virginia and possibly portions of Northeast GA. The good news is that I did not mention South GA, specifically Lowndes County, in the impacted areas. We are no longer in the error cone so the likelihood of us receiving anything other than a little rainfall is extremely low. The probability of Tropical Storm Force Winds (39 mph or greater) reaching as far South as Lowndes County has fallen to 5%-10%. Local hotels are at 100% capacity as evacuees have come in seeking refuge from the potentially impacted areas. Be mindful that with all these visitors we may see higher than normal traffic counts and many of these additional motorists may not be familiar with where they are going so pay extra close attention and watch out for the other guy. In addition to being extra careful as you travel around town, also be mindful that these visitors aren’t just here on vacation but are stressed out from the fact that they are hours away from home, spending money they didn’t expect to have to spend and uncertain what they will find when they return home. So be sure to exhibit a little extra patience and some of the hospitality that makes Lowndes County and Valdosta a great place to live. You never know what impact a simple act of kindness may have on someone.

We will still continue to monitor the storm as it moves closer to land and pass along any pertinent information as we receive it. We are also closely monitoring the influx of evacuees and potential needs they may have related to shelter and other basic needs.

School officials will stay in contact with local emergency management and will provide updates as often as necessary to keep everyone up to date.

Emily Anderson has written about Valwood's first 50 years in an entertaining book celebrating the rich history of our institution. In addition to her research and personal memories of her time at Valwood, Mrs. Anderson has also collected memoirs from former headmasters, students and parents. Colorful accounts of Valwood's infancy along with stories and pictures throughout the years portray how Valwood evolved without losing the Valiant Spirit it retains today. Get your copy in the Spirit Store for $25.
