Athletics Update
Volleyball (13-1)
The Valwood Valiants swept the Sherwood Lady Eagles in front of an enthusiastic crowd during their first home game of the season (25-12, 25-13, 25-19). Energized by the student section, the Valiants dominated early in the first set with 3 kills from sophomore, Korinne Johnson. Freshman, Ellie Griner led the Valiants offensively during the second set with 4 kills and 1 ace. During the final set, freshman Anna Alvarado stepped up to the service line and led the Valiants on a 7 point run. Ultimately aggressive serving proved to be more than the Lady Eagles could handle as aces were tallied by Nicole Manwell (6), Erin Moss (3), Kennedy Kimbro (4), Makayla Yates (1), and Marleigh Carson (3). A solid and consistent Sherwood team couldn't compete with the offensive connection between sophomore setter, Kennedy Kimbro and senior middle, Erin Moss. This duo connected contributed 7 aces, 17 kills, and 23 assists. The Valiants improve to 13-1 on the season and will play again at home TONIGHT, Thursday, September 20th against Colquitt County at 4:30pm & North Florida Christian at 7:30pm.

Story by senior, Erin Moss.
Football (4-1)
The Valwood Valiants rallied from a nine-point fourth quarter deficit to beat the Heritage Hawks 28-24 on Friday night in Newnan. Trailing 24-15 in the fourth quarter, the Valiants hit the comeback trail. A 50-yard TD pass from Burns brought the Valiants within two, 24-22 with 11:34 left in the fourth quarter. Burns connected with Tyler Cross for the go-ahead score with 2:24 remaining and the Valiants held the rest of the way. After scoring just seven points in last week's loss to North Florida Christian, the Valiants scored 13 points in the fourth quarter on Friday. Up next, Valwood is off this week before opening region play on the road at Tiftarea Academy on Friday, September 28th.
Cross Country
Valwood cross country traveled to Americus, GA on Saturday morning to run in the Southland Academy Invitational. The varsity girls placed 1st overall and they all ran season best times. Brenna Clark (3rd place), Jolie Green (7th place) and Jordan Green (10th place) finished in the top 10. The middle school girls ran as well and both Emma and Ella Burnett received top 10 medals, as well as season best times placing 7th and 9th. Kendyl The middle school boys also ran well. Ethan Burnett (5th grader) ran a PR for the 3200 and placed 16th out of 95 runners!
Softball (8-4)
The Valiants defeated the Deerfield Windsor Knights 14-1 on Tuesday in Albany in five innings . The Valiants started out hot scoring four and tallying at least one run each inning scoring two in the second, one in the third and fourth, and six in the fifth to secure the win. Thirteen hits were earned by the Valiants and just four combined hits allowed by pitchers Ansley Bennett and Darcee Brown. Bri Fosdick, Mary Clare Martin, Ansley Haskard, and Darcee Brown all had two hits during the game. All other Valiants in the lineup had one hit each. The Valiants will be back home at 4 pm tonight, as they host Brookwood. They stand 2-1 in region play.

Story prepared by the varsity softball team.

HISTORY BOOKS ARE STILL AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE

Emily Anderson has written about Valwood's first 50 years in an entertaining book celebrating the rich history of our institution. In addition to her research and personal memories of her time at Valwood, Mrs. Anderson has also collected memoirs from former headmasters, students and parents. Colorful accounts of Valwood's infancy along with stories and pictures throughout the years portray how Valwood evolved without losing the Valiant Spirit it retains today. Get your copy in the Spirit Store for $25.

Click here to order your copy today or complete this FORM and turn it into Crane Hall.
Legacy Family Spotlight
Jane, Alexandra (10th grade), John ('81) and Mary Peeples.
Legacy families consist of one or both parents who are alumni of Valwood School. Valwood currently has seventeen second-generation students enrolled and one third generation student.
When my older brother, Bill, and I enrolled in Valwood in the fall of 1970 the school was starting its 2nd year of operation. It had no history, no tradition, and no legacy. We knew that much, but we didn't understand that we weren't only joining a new school, we were joining a family. As any family does, Valwood has struggled at times to "make ends meet" and argued about the best ways to "raise the children." Yet, the proof is in the pudding: just look at Valwood's graduates--our grown-up kids. Seriously, that's a good looking "group photo!"

Bill and I are thrilled with the way Valwood has shaped our kids--they'll soon have 39 years as Valiants between them spanning 28 years at the school. Many other nuclear families have lived these events as part of the larger Valwood family in which every member has both the privilege and the responsibility to impact the future of the clan. Family histories, traditions, and legacies are born in this manner, and thus it is with our school.

Valwood. It's a good family; one I am proud to embrace just as it has hugged my family close for 48 years.

John C. Peeples, '81
