Athletics Update
Volleyball (15-1)
Valwood Volleyball swept the competition across all levels at Eager Sports Center Thursday night. The Valiant volleyball team hosted Colquitt County and North Florida Christian for four different
matches. The night began with the Varisty team for the Valiants facing the Colquitt County Lady Packers for the second time this season. The Valiants made quick work of the Lady Packers with the final score 25-7. Colquitt took the second set 25-21. The Valiants refocused to go on and won the next two sets, 25-9 and 25-10. Stat leaders for the Valiants include: Erin Moss with 10 Kills, Kennedy Kimbro with 5 kills and 16 assists, Marleigh Carson with 7 kills, Ellie Griner with 5 kills, and Anna Alvarado with 16 assists. The Volleyball matches continued into the night. The middle school and Junior Varsity teams were given the opportunity to show their skills as both teams defeated North Florida Christian in straight sets. The final match of the night pitted two historically solid teams together with the Valiants having a record of 3-2 with NFC in the past 5 years. The match had potential to be a slug fest. An enormous amount of energy was being brought to Eager Sports Center from the fans allowing the Valiants to come out strong with their serving, passing, and hitting from all players. The Valiants took an early lead in the game and never looked back winning
in straight sets (16-25, 12-25, and 16-25). Georgia Tech Volleyball commit, Erin Moss, lead the Valiants with her presence and performance. Moss earned 10 points in the first game with 6 kills, 3 blocks, and an ace. Moss would earn 25 total kills in the three matches. Other notable players for the Valiants included Kennedy Kimbro totaling 9
assists and 6 digs, Gracyn Sanderlin with 4 kills, and Makayla Yates with 3 digs and 2 kills. The Valiants improve to 15-1 on the season, and they will host Valdosta High School for their next match on Thursday September 27th.

Story by senior, Erin Moss.

On Saturday, September 22, the varsity cross country girls and the middle school boys teams traveled to Albany, Georgia to compete in the Deerfield Windsor invitational. The varsity girls all ran well and all achieved their season best times. They placed 4th overall out of 15 teams. The girls placed individually at 12th, 17th, 23rd, and 35th out of 158 runners. Running for the varsity girls was Brenna Clark, Jolie Green, Jordan Green, Madeline Castor and Millie Hollis.

The middle school boys team also achieved faster running times, running with 229 competitors. Attending this week was Nathan Bozung, Louden Castor, Corey Backe, Wesley Clark, Luke Register, Jaxson Routsong, and Lawrence Smith.
Our next race will be this Saturday at Southland Academy. This will be Middle School runners region tournament and last race of the season.
Softball (10-4)
In a neck to neck game Tuesday in Americus, Valwood defeated Southland Academy 5-0. The game started slow, but in the fourth inning, Natalie Rojas started a three batter hitting streak with a single to center field. Followed by Darcee Brown. With runners on first and second, Lindsey Browning tripled with a line drive to right center field scoring Rojas and Nijem (running for Brown). Bri Fosdick scored the third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to center field. In the top of the seventh, Valwood went on a two out rally when Emily Taylor singled with a line drive to left field followed by a single from Ansley Bennett. With an infield error, the bases were loaded. Another single by Rojas scored Valwood’s fourth run when Taylor crossed home plate. A walk by Brown to score Bennett concluded scoring for the Valiants. Darcee Brown earned the win in the circle giving up just two hits on the day. Mary Clare Martin and Natalie Rojas each earned two hits on the day. Ansley Haskard, Graceigh Booth, Emily Taylor, Ansley Bennett, Darcee Brown and Lindsey Browning all had one hit each.

The win against Southland Academy kept the Valiants in the running for the Region title, bringing their region record to 4-1. They will host Deerfield at 4 pm on Thursday, September 27, at home and Brooks County on October 1 at 4:30 pm. The seniors will be honored in the game against Brooks County.

Safety Update - Internet & Social Media Awareness

The internet is a growing part of our lives, and students are being exposed to a wide range of content as they work and play online. Valwood School will continue to educate students about the risks posed by irresponsible use of the internet. We encourage parents to be a part of proactive efforts to help our youth use their social media accounts in a safe and responsible way. Students also play an important role in alerting their parents and school administrators to any suspicious online behavior that they witness. Here are a few tips for parents and students to keep in mind as they spend time online.

Parents
  • Be familiar with your child’s online activity, including all social media accounts.
  • Talk to your kids regularly about their use of the internet and social media, and create a safe environment for your children to report internet activity or online posts/messages that make them uncomfortable.
  • Be aware of the consequences (legal and school-based) of inappropriate use of the internet, including forwarding or re-posting of inappropriate or threatening content, to your child and your family.
  • Report inappropriate or threatening online content immediately to law enforcement or school staff.
  • Make sure your children know that even though they think snapchat posts or Instagram posts go away, people can and will screenshot these posts. They will fall into the wrong hands or they can show up years later.
  • Stress to your children the permanence of the online world. Make sure your children understand the definition of a digital footprint and the impact inappropriate messages or images can have if a future college administrator or employer were to find them. Remind them that what goes on line, stays on line!  Click here to learn more about digital footprint.

Students
  • Do not make irresponsible, frightening or threatening posts on your online accounts as they could result in serious legal and/or school disciplinary action.
  • NEVER forward or re-post an inappropriate or threatening post or message that you see or receive online. Instead, report that post and/or message to an adult and/or school staff member immediately.
  • Encourage your friends to be responsible internet and social media users and remember what goes online, stays online!
  • Do not post or share anything on social media that you would not want your teachers, college admissions officers, future bosses — and yes, your grandmother — to see.

Thank you,
Mr. Les

Valwood Parents Association Update

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help with Extreme Team Day on November 9th! For our new Valwood families, Extreme Team Day is our lower school academic field day. Students are put on teams and work together to solve various challenges. Parents explain the directions and observe each group as they attempt to complete the assigned tasks. This is a fun way to get involved! Extreme Team Day takes place in Rodgers Performance Hall. Students in Kindergarten through second grade participate from 8:30-10:30 am , and students in third through fifth grade participate from 12:30-2:30 pm on Friday, November 9th. Pre-K students do not participate in Extreme Team Day. If you are interested in helping with Extreme Team Day and haven't already signed up, please contact Tori Holmes ( tori@htwomarketing.com ) or Julie Godbee ( jjgodbee@gmail.com ).

In addition to her research and personal memories of her time at Valwood, Mrs. Anderson has also collected memoirs from former headmasters, students and parents. Colorful accounts of Valwood's infancy along with stories and pictures throughout the years portray how Valwood evolved without losing the Valiant Spirit it retains today. Get your copy in the Spirit Store for $25.
