Letter from the President & CEO

Dear Members:

The Virginia House of Delegates and Gubernatorial races are in full swing. The ads, radio spots, billboards, and talking heads are everywhere.  In contrast, we are bombarded with daily e-mails, tweets and twits about what Congress or the President is or is not doing to Make America Great Again. In the midst of all the vitriol, this week's passing of a political legend, The Honorable Lacey Putney, has reminded many of us about the honor and tradition that one can bring to public service in the Commonwealth.

Former Delegate Lacey Putney served 52 years in the Virginia House of Delegates until just a few years ago.  He was the Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee and served as an Independent from Bedford's 19th House District.  He also held the honor of being the longest serving member of our General Assembly in its storied history and was one of the longest serving members in all of our nation's 99 legislative bodies!

Lacey was a friend to manufacturers.  He was an ally of the VMA and carried legislation for us into his last years in office.  He continued to be a champion of free enterprise in retirement.  But, more than his tenure and leadership, he embodied the statesman qualities that we value in our public servants.  Speaker Bill Howell characterized Delegate Putney as having "possessed an independent voice and always acquitted himself as a wise and effective legislator."  When I think of Lacey, I think of a true Virginia gentleman that was generous with advice and was able to convey it through the best stories.  Lacey has left an indelible mark on our political landscape - one that others can hope to achieve in word and deed.

Delegate Putney will lie in state in the Rotunda of the Virginia Capitol this Saturday.

Best Wishes,
Brett
