Community catalysts across the ages: Woodie Pagan
 | | Woodie Pagan is a member of ReServe, which connects the county's nonprofits with professionals 55+ who want to give back to their communities. Learn more |
Contributed by Islara B. Souto, Alliance for Aging Director of Planning & Special Projects
The workshop planned for a recent Tuesday in Little Havana was to train 15 elders in safe-walking behaviors. All arrangements had been made and materials prepared: 15 Certificates of Completion were printed for each "older graduate" and 15 Safety Kits assembled as a graduation gift. The room was set up, the attendance sheet ready, curriculum module loaded on the laptop, a new light bulb in the projector, and all systems a "go."
The trainer for the workshop, a ReServist named Woodie Pagan, called my cell phone the night before the Little Havana event. "Guess how many participants are coming to the workshop tomorrow?" he asked. "Oh, the 15 we planned for," I responded.
"Nope," he continued, "there will be more than 300 elders at the workshop in the Little Havana Activity & Nutrition Center!" Read more.

Celebrations and skepticism after healthcare ruling
On June 25, a group of Catalyst Miami staff members joined small business owners and local nonprofit organizations at Wilkie D. Ferguson, Jr. Courthouse in celebration of the Supreme Court ruling to uphold the Affordable Care Act. Small business owners gave testimonies that expressed their gratitude for tax credits to help provide insurance for workers. Nurses from Jackson praised the Patients Bill of Rights, coverage to Americans with pre-existing conditions and slower cost growth in Medicare.
Governor Rick Scott announced intent to opt out of Medicaid expansion, which would result in additional hardship for the growing legions of uninsured in Florida. Click here to find out more about the status of healthcare reform in Florida.

Family leaders graduate with new civic engagement tools
After 22 weeks of training, our parents, teens and children from the Family Leadership Training Institute have developed tools necessary to become strong advocates for children and communities. Twelve parents, 3 children and 5 teens graduated last week in a beautiful ceremony at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden, increasing membership in our alumni group "Parent Ambassadors" to over 125!
The room was lit up with smiles, laughter, applause and excitement. Class speakers shared their gratitude for fellow classmates, Catalyst Miami staff, Federation of Families, and The Children's Trust. The Youth Move choir, an initiative launched by Catalyst civic leadership alumni, wowed the audience in three languages.

Congratulations to the second class of 2012! One more graduation to come.

Catalyst friends enjoy a night at the theater
Catalyst Miami thanks our many friends and sponsors who joined us for David Mamet's play Race on July 6. Over 139 guests packed the house for our 12th Annual Fundraiser and Award Ceremony at GableStage. Mamet lived up to his reputation as a provocative playwright not afraid to confront prejudices that pervade society. Among the special guests were honorees Miguel Milanes and Dr. Marvin Dunn, who were both recognized as Champions for Equality and Justice. Headline sponsor Weil, Gotshal and Manges LLP and Joe Adler, Artistic Director at GableStage, are our special heroes. Don't miss this amazing production, running until August 5.
