You're invited to a night at the theater!
Catalyst Miami and friends will get an advanced viewing of the play Race. Two lawyers--one black, one white--defend a wealthy white executive against the charge of raping a young black woman. The riveting drama leads us to wonder what more we can do to create a just and equitable society. We will also honor two of Miami's greatest advocates--Miguel Milanes, former communications chief for DCF, now vice president of Allegany Franciscan Ministries, and Dr. Marvin Dunn, historian, psychologist and founder of Roots in the City, two tireless champions for justice in our community. We will gather after the play for a cocktail reception at the piano bar.
When: July 6, 7:30 p.m.
Where: GableStage, The Biltmore, 1200 Anastasia Avenue Coral Gables, Florida 33134 Click here to purchase tickets.

Call to action: oppose HOME program funding cuts
HOME funding is critical to financing a number of affordable housing developments, including those for the homeless, seniors, people with disabilities and other low-income people. As Congress debates the spending bill, several Representatives are expected to recommend cuts in funding to the HOME program. Call your Representative NOW and let them know we can't live with cuts to affordable housing in Florida.

Voter education and registration just got easier!
At Catalyst Miami we believe in self-empowerment, so we support people to self-register to vote and to get timely voter updates. We don't do the registration ourselves because new Florida legislation makes it very difficult for organizations to do so. However, together with TurboVote, Catalyst Miami makes registering to vote and signing up for voter alerts as easy as renting a DVD from Netflix. To self-register or to get alerts, text the word "Catalyst" to 313131 or visit our registration site; it's that easy! Not only can you register to vote, but we will also send text and email reminders so that constituents don't miss elections. For more information about this initiative, including how your organization can set up a voting education center, contact Lori Deus.

Community catalysts connecting for good
Parents making change
Dina Weinstein, a Parent Leadership Training Institute graduate, remembers a time during her childhood when majority of kids from her Massachusetts neighborhood walked or biked to school. Fast forward to Miami-Dade County in 2012 where the roads are heavily trafficked with cars and the streets are less pedestrian-friendly. Florida has one of the highest numbers of injuries and fatalities due to children being hit by cars. Most parents cite safety issues as one of the primary reasons they are reluctant to allow their children to walk to school. The desire to change this reality inspired Dina to initiate a Bike and Walk to School Day that advocates alternative transportation for children going to and from school as her final project for PLTI. Thanks to Miami-Dade leaders who support the DREAM
Thanks to the leadership of many incredibe people from South Florida, President Obama passed an executive order granting work permits to young adults brought to the United States before they turned 16, who have been in this country for at least five years, with no criminal record, who graduate high school or serve in the U.S. military.
Catalyst Miami salutes the many people, including immigrant activists Gaby Pacheco, Carlos Roa, Felipe Matos and Juan Rodriguez, as well as the organizations and lawmakers who supported them, in making this DREAM a reality for hundreds of thousands of youth in this country. We know there is still a lot of work to be done, but we join you in celebrating this important victory.
