Education and Ministry Highlights

The Arts Guild presents...
a new art exhibit
Peace in the Storm
Cafe and Art Hallway
As we are all recover from the effects of Hurricane Harvey, the Vineyard Church of Houston Arts Guild invites artists to give expression to our emotions and thoughts through the visual arts, writing, or music. We know we need the Lord's grace, his provision and daily mercies to bring restoration, healing and wholeness.

The focus of the artwork should lift our eyes and hearts to the hope that we have in God's refuge through the storm. This fits well with the current sermon series on Philippians.

The children will also be participating in this exhibit with pieces that they create in children's church.

Medium: Collage, sketches, written work, paint, photography, or music to play at the exhibit open house.
Process: Submissions can be from all ages, from all Vineyard congregations in the area.

Ideas to be submitted ASAP to Penny Robinson.

Harvey Response -
ONE MONTH POST-HARVEY
We are a little over a month past Harvey, and your response has been awesome! From giving financially to helping all over the city, our folks have been participating in the work of Jesus - recovery and restoration.

Here at home base, we are still distributing the huge number of donations that we received. We have been able to supply a number of local non-profit organizations, as well as individual families, with essentials during this month. It has been a joy to connect goods with people in need.

Harry and Megan have been working on distributing the generous financial donations to families as they rebuild. We will continue with that in the months to come, as needs come to light.

Many are wondering how they might continue to serve in these days, since much of the immediate need has passed. Below are a few ideas to keep in mind. We'd love to hear how you are staying involved!

* Vineyard Mercy Response continues to respond to the need for gutting and mucking homes. If you have a family that needs this service, fill out this request help form. This service will end on October 21. They have teams coming from around the country ready to help!

* HIM Food Pantry, of which we are a partner church, needs food donations. The pantry is not receiving their weekly delivery from the Houston Food Bank and is functioning with an extremely low inventory. You can drop items in the red shopping cart by the nursery any Sunday, and we will get those donations straight to the pantry. When shopping, keep in mind the items needed: canned soups, beans, peanut butter, pasta, powdered milk, and cereal. Folks who are already in vulnerable situations (with little safety net) tend to suffer the most after natural disasters due to lost wages, loss transportation, and the higher demand on social services. Let's continue to help where we can.

* Do you know a family that has been directly affected by Harvey? Consider serving them in some simple way this month. Although much of Houston is getting back to normal, we know that the thousands of families who are in the midst of reconstruction are experiencing anything but normal life. Their budgets are strained and many are still living in modified conditions or have been completely displaced. Consider dropping off a home-cooked meal one evening, putting together a gift basket with household essentials, sending an encouraging note in the mail, giving a gift card for groceries or other necessary items, offering to cut their grass or babysit for a few hours. Be creative!

For questions about our participation or how to get involved, email Megan.

YOUTH NEWS

Attention all youth!
As young followers of Jesus, one of the transitions that some of our teens struggle with is when they graduate high school. The transition from attending youth classes to joining the adults in service on Sunday mornings can seems strange, odd and maybe a little boring.

Over the past several years we have used Communion Sunday (first Sunday of every month) to host our Bella Girls meetings and Cross Trainer meetings for the guys. These classes have been fun and engaging for or teens. However one of the draw backs is that it has taken away an opportunity for our young people to make a gradual transition into our regular Sunday service with the adults. After talking with Michael about it, we think Communion Sunday is an ideal way for our teens to get a taste of life as an adult follower of Christ.

We have discontinuee Bella Girls and Cross Trainers and ask all the youth to join the adults in Sunday service.
I made an announcement to the youth to make them aware of the change, but we will need your help.
If youth classes don't meet, some teens will go to the Cafe or to a 2nd Cup. The youth should only go to the children's department if they have cleared it with Veronica or Jill. Please help us by encouraging your teen to stay in the service on Communion Sunday!

Thank you for your help as we make this transition.

Tuesday night youth gathering is weekly at 6pm.
