"Have You Heard?"
Sermon Text: Romans 10:5-17
Pastor Ben Roberts

There is a good reason God created us with two ears and one mouth. We are designed to listen, especially to God's message of salvation in Jesus.  Those who believe have heard...what about those who haven't?  How will they hear the message of Christ?

Old Testament: Job 38:4-18
Gospel: Matthew 14:22-33

Pastor Ben Roberts

In A Man Named Martin - Part 1: The Man viewers encounter a 15th-century religious reformer from Germany who broke ranks with the Catholic Church.  This Bible study from Lutheran Hour Ministries is the first of a three-part series devoted to Martin Luther - a monk whose Spirit-inspired grasp of God's justification of sinners through faith in the Savior was the cornerstone of the Protestant Reformation.

Sunday Children's Message
8:00 and 10:45 a.m.
We may not think our feet are beautiful, but the Bible tells us that they are beautiful when they bring the Good News of Jesus to other people.  Jesus sends us many places to share His love and when we share His love, He says even our feet are beautiful.  Where is Jesus sending you to share His love this week?

August Mission Cafe Donations 2017

Sunday, August 13:   The Mission Café donations for August will benefit Lutheran Church Charities.  The flood waters have receded, therefore the total impact the flood waters have had on homes and businesses is a lot.  LCC continues to receive requests to other areas to assist families who have experienced loss due to the storms. LCC Disaster Relief teams have been sent to Grays Lake, Hampshire, and homes along the Fox River.

LCC’s Mission is to share the Mercy, Compassion, Presence and Proclamation of Jesus Christ to those who are suffering and in need.  Please keep the people whose lives have been affected by these flood waters in your prayers.

Lutheran Church Charities operates with a Dollar In – Dollar Out funding process where EVERY dollar given for a cause goes directly to that cause or need, with LCC acknowledging the gift and overseeing that the money is used as intended.
TRIP PROGRAM

Whether you are starting your back to school shopping, or updating your wardrobes for the new school year, don’t forget to order your TRIP cards! If you are planning on dining out, or just treating yourself, start your shopping with TRIP cards. There are many choices for local grocery stores, dining establishments and department stores.

Why not receive a tuition reimbursement and take care of your household shopping needs and school supplies at the same time? Remember to check the website www.shopwithscrip.com for any special promotions, retailers such as Office Max/Depot, Staples, Mariano’s, Whole Foods, Jewel, or your favorite retailers may be running.

Great Lakes Scrip Center offers PrestoPay, a method we are currently enrolling school families and others interested in supporting the AH Miller Scholarship Program here at St Johns.  The steps to get setup for PrestoPay to get scrips sent to your device for immediate use or to a computer to print out bar codes to be used at restaurants, retailers or other providers are on the website. Also on the website are GLSC videos and more information about the process.

To learn more, pick up information in the school office or church narthex wall file folders or ask us: Amy Buonassisi (630-290-0268) and Sandra Pauley (708-362-2197).  It is completely free (you buy a $25 gift card or $100 gift card for the retailer of your choice and receive that gift card) AND easy!  You can take advantage of this program for your own family or you can donate it for another family - - it’s simple.

We will be placing then beginning school year  TRIP order for your shopping needs on this upcoming date: Aug.28, Sept. 5 (Tuesday), 11, 18, and 25.  Have your order in the green order boxes, either in the school office or church narthex by the Sunday prior to the order date to participate.

A Week at VBS 2017

90 children and 55 volunteers experienced the joy of Maker Fun Factory VBS.  The children learned that God made them special and He has a plan for them.  They got to destroy idols and see the empty tomb. Snacks were delicious and fun and reinforced the lesson.  S'mores made out of graham crackers, cool whip, and chocolate chips was a favorite.  We learned that there will always be some more of God's love and we used the chocolate chips to make a cross.  The children loved the games and enjoyed spending time with our comfort dog Angel.  Catapulting pom poms during craft time was not only fun, but helped them remember Gideon's battle.  The children formed relationships with their crew leaders as they opened their Bibles and learned to follow Jesus.

St. John's works together to make VBS a reality.  Thank you to everyone who made this week a success. Thanks to those who moved chairs, made name tags, or worked to make the set.  Thank you to those who brought graham crackers or paper towel tubes, helped the children with crafts, or told Bible stories. The list goes on and on. God assembled exactly the right team to make this week’s VBS a time of growing and sharing for the children and the adults.

Let us pray that the seeds planted during VBS continue to grow.  Let us thank God for our Maker Fun Factory VBS.
