Summer at the Lake: The Gift of Faith When You're Drowning
During the hot Summer months, many families head to the lake for a time of renewal, refreshment and bonding. Jesus also spent some time at the lake, but what He did there was far from just lounging around in an inflatable. Some of His greatest miracles He ever did was on or around the lake…all in the presence of His disciples…all during times when they felt like they were “drowning”. And He did these in order to renew the disciples’ faith, refresh their trust in Him and bond them to Himself and His all-powerful presence. During this 4-week sermon series, as His disciples, we’re going to head to the “lake”. We do this in order to have Jesus strengthen our faith in Him.

7/15: Faith…to Follow Jesus (Luke 5:1-11)
7/22: Faith…to Weather The Storms (Mark 4:35-41)
7/29: Faith…to Trust the Lord Provides (John 6:1-14)
8/5: Faith…to Get Out on the Water (Matthew 14:22-33)

Growing and Going: A Look At The Heart of God
(A study of the book of Philippians)

Paul’s letter to the church in Philippi is often called “the epistle of joy”. But what “joy” was Paul writing about? It could be summed up in two ways: the HEART of God and the FAITH of the church. In other words, the Gospel of Jesus Christ that they had received was overflowing towards others…especially those who had not received the Gospel at all. In this 6-week study, we will be looking at the letter to the Philippians through that lens. How does the Gospel reveal the heart of God? And how does that Gospel inform our mission to reach out to others who do not belong to a Christian community?

Week Two (7/8): Chained or Unchained? (Philippians 1:12-30)
Week Three (7/15): Completed Joy (Philippians 2:1-11)
Week Four (7/22): Shining Like Stars (Philippians 2:12-18)
Week Five (7/29): Extra-terrestrial Living (Philippians 3:12-21)
Week Six (8/5): Actually Going (Philippians 4:1-9)

SHARE ...with Your Service
What Does Four Hours a Month Mean to You?
To a person in need, it can mean the world. BEDS is in need of volunteers for their Summer Shelter Program. Summer Shelter is a bit more informal and a great opportunity to share a shift with a friend or family member, work with more flexible schedules, and try one or a few shifts without having to commit to a monthly shift.

Don't forget that St. John's is hosting the BEDS Summer Shelter from July 16 to July 22!

If you are interested in volunteering, please visit the link below:
You Can Help!
Shipwrecked - Rescued By Jesus VBS Needs You!
The most important thing you can do for VBS is pray. Pray that  volunteers' and children's lives will be impacted for eternity. Helping hands are needed to make this work. We are looking for people to serve on the music team and craft helpers. We also need crew leaders that will lead the students to the different stations. Shipwrecked - Rescued by Jesus is an adventure that will help kids and adults deepen their faith by discovering that Jesus cares about them personally and rescues in life's toughest circumstances. It is our prayer that Shipwrecked - Rescued by Jesus VBS will allow Jesus' loving care for each person to come to life as never before. Mission Focus for July:
Military Outreach USA was founded in 2010 as Military Outreach Greater Chicago by a group of caring individuals who saw a need to be filled for our Military Community. That need was to ensure there was awareness among, initially, houses of worship, and later businesses and centers of education, to have an awareness of issues that could affect those men and women returning from service in Iraq and Afghanistan. Once that awareness was created resource materials were provided to help serve those men and women who served us.

The template for this outreach worked so well that in November of 2013 the decision was made to change the name from Military Outreach Greater Chicago to Military Outreach USA and take our programs nationally.  Today, Military Outreach USA stands at the forefront of service organizations in providing through our partners 10's of thousand of needed items for our Military Community.  Thank you for supporting this wonderful organization that provides support to those who have served to protect our country.

CHURCH OFFICE INFORMATION
QCD...What's This?
A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) is a direct transfer of funds from your IRA custodian, payable to a qualified charity. When planning your annual IRA Required Minimum Distribution you might want to consider a contribution to St. John's. The amount of the contribution is not taxable to the tax payer, as long as the payment comes directly to St. John's from your IRA Custodian. A number of members are using the QDC and find it a good way to reduce taxable income while making a contribution.

In you are 70 & 1/2 or older and have an IRA Required Minimum Distribution, you might be eligible for a QCD. For more information you should consult your Tax Advisor. Also, Bob Roth and Jeff Baker can provide more information on this IRA approved program.

Contact information: Bob Roth, Chairman, Board of Finance, (630) 325-7305 or Jeff Baker, Treasurer, (708) 446-9567
