"Treasure in Clay Jars: Generosity"
Pastor Ben Roberts

Old Testament: 1 Kings 17:8-16
Epistle: 2 Corinthians 8:1-15
Holy Gospel: Mark 12:41-44
Sermon Series
"Treasures in Clay Jars: Extraordinary Power in Ordinary Lives"
(Week 5 of a 6 Week Series)
“We have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.” (2 Corinthians 4:7)

Clay jars. Back in Paul’s day, they were nothing special; not much to look at or value. That’s what made them especially good for anyone who wanted to hide valuable “treasure” in them!

Being a follower of Jesus Christ is not easy nowadays. In a world focused on displays of power, living perfect lives and having it altogether, others may look down on us when we stumble, suffer and show weakness. But the “power” to live as the Lord’s disciples does not come from our own strength, but from God’s “treasure” that shines forth in our weakness.

In this sermon series based on passages from 2 Corinthians, we will be looking at some of the extraordinary “treasures” that God places within our ordinary lives. Come, receive and be encouraged to “live weak” in a world driven by human power.

Growing and Going: A Look At The Heart of God
(A study of the book of Philippians)

Paul’s letter to the church in Philippi is often called “the epistle of joy”. But what “joy” was Paul writing about? It could be summed up in two ways: the HEART of God and the FAITH of the church. In other words, the Gospel of Jesus Christ that they had received was overflowing towards others…especially those who had not received the Gospel at all. In this 6-week study, we will be looking at the letter to the Philippians through that lens. How does the Gospel reveal the heart of God? And how does that Gospel inform our mission to reach out to others who do not belong to a Christian community?

Week One (7/1): A Work Begun (Philippians 1:1-11)
Week Two (7/8): Chained or Unchained? (Philippians 1:12-30)
Week Three (7/15): Completed Joy (Philippians 2:1-11)
Week Four (7/22): Shining Like Stars (Philippians 2:12-18)
Week Five (7/29): Extra-terrestrial Living (Philippians 3:12-21)
Week Six (8/5): Actually Going (Philippians 4:1-9)

What Does Four Hours a Month Mean to You?
To a person in need, it can mean the world. BEDS is in need of volunteers for their Summer Shelter Program. Summer Shelter is a bit more informal and a great opportunity to share a shift with a friend or family member, work with more flexible schedules, and try one or a few shifts without having to commit to a monthly shift.

Don't forget that St. John's is hosting the BEDS Summer Shelter from July 16 to July 22!

If you are interested in volunteering, please visit the link below:
You Can Help!
Shipwrecked - Rescued By Jesus VBS Needs You!
The most important thing you can do for VBS is pray. Pray that  volunteers' and children's lives will be impacted for eternity. Helping hands are needed to make this work. We are looking for people to serve on the music team and craft helpers. We also need crew leaders that will lead the students to the different stations. Shipwrecked - Rescued by Jesus is an adventure that will help kids and adults deepen their faith by discovering that Jesus cares about them personally and rescues in life's toughest circumstances. It is our prayer that Shipwrecked - Rescued by Jesus VBS will allow Jesus' loving care for each person to come to life as never before. St. John's Family Theater Production
This Summer will mark the 10th year of the St. John's Family Theater and plans are currently underway for a show that will highlight some of our favorite songs from the previous years!
Our cast is made up of a mix of congregation members as well as school families. In addition to just having a lot of fun, Family Theater also makes for a great environment to spend time with and get to know members of the St. John's family that you may not have had the opportunity to meet yet! We would love to have new faces in our cast this year too, so please consider being a part of this fun ministry!
Our rehearsals times are "family vacation & summer activity friendly" so I'm sure we can work around whatever you have going on. Our performance dates will take place during the weekend of August 10-12.
More information will be coming out soon but for now, please contact Heidi Dahlstrand at or (847) 302-3967 to let her know know if you are interested in being a part of this summers show!
