Grade 7 Visits the Myerberg Center to Begin the Better Together Collaboration with Local Seniors
KSDS has been selected to participate in the Legacy Heritage Better Together Program. The Legacy Heritage Better Together Program is a two-year program designed to encourage meaningful interaction between young and old. Grade 7, under the direction of Ellen Friedman, is participating in the program with Myerberg Center.  KSDS is grateful for being chosen for the Legacy Heritage Better Together Program and looks forward to sharing with our community how this program positively influences our students.

On Friday, September 15, our 7th graders participated in their first Better Together visit with members of the Myerberg Senior Center. The students had prepared for the trip by studying Jewish texts about the wisdom that comes with age. When they met with the seniors at the Myerberg Center, they all did a “gallery walk” where they looked at photos that contrasted the technology, fashions and Baltimore landmarks of 50 or 60 years ago with those of today. Students and seniors exchanged phone numbers, and before the end of the visits the students were already helping their new friends to get the most out of their phones. The conversations were so lively that it was hard to get the students back to the bus when it was time to return to school! We’re looking forward with excitement to the rest of our year-long collaboration!
Celebrate 36 with Middle School Reading Challenge
One of the ways our Middle School students are participating in the excitement for KSDS’s 36th anniversary is by embarking on a Celebrate 36 reading initiative. By the end of this week, each class will have had the opportunity to use our school library to begin this venture of reading in any of 36 categories (click here for details ) . Each student who participates will be able to track the progress of his or her grade and of the Middle School students as a whole in this group effort.

Bunches of Lunches Collection--THIS Wednesday, September 27
We are delighted to announce that this school year's Bunches of Lunches program will begin with our first collection this Wednesday, September 27th. This KSDS program has provided healthy lunches to more than 2,200 individuals since 2015 and focused our students and our community on the important issues of hunger and the isolation of seniors. Please plan on having your children pack an extra lunch for that Wednesday. A brown lunch bag, along with packing guidelines and family talking points, will be sent home approximately two days prior to the collection. Thank you for helping to make this program a great success! If you are interested in volunteering with Bunches of Lunches, including "one and done" opportunities, please send an email to Jill Baldinger at [email protected] .

Help Support the STEAM Showcase by Co-Chairing the Sisterhood Hamantaschen Sale!
Help KSDS and CAC at the same time! The Sisterhood needs a Co-Chair for its next Hamantaschen Sale. Last spring $1,000 of the profits from this successful program were donated to KSDS for its STEAM Showcase. For 2018 the Sisterhood has pledged the same amount of the proceeds to KSDS. The responsibilities of being the Hamantaschen Co-Chair are:

  • Work closely with Co-Chair Andrea Polsky in scheduling and supervising "makes" (Friday mornings 8-11am making dough) and "bakes" (Sunday mornings 9am-1pm baking Hamantaschen). Note: There will only be four weekends of baking.
  • Help coordinate sales, keep updated lists of orders and assist in filling them when baking is done.
  • Help recruit volunteers to participate during TBA scheduled times (January and February 2018) for the “makes” and “bakes”.

This is a great opportunity to make this Fundraiser a huge success in 2018. If you are interested or have questions, please contact Andrea Polsky, [email protected] or Ruth Silber, [email protected]

Boscov's Shopping Passes are available in the Sisterhood Judaica shop! $5 each gives you a Shopping Pass for up to 25% on Tuesday, October 17th, plus the opportunity to win Great Prizes! All proceeds go to Sisterhood, which in turn supports all our schools!
