Being in Service

I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who will
have sought and found how to serve.
Albert Schweitzer

Dear Friends,

There are big changes coming for all of us on this beautiful blue planet. It doesn't matter if you are rich or poor, young or old, black, white or yellow, the changes are coming and they are coming fast. They will affect each and every one of us as well as generations to come. Even the least aware of us feel it: a quickening of our life style, a churning in the stomach, a tenseness in the air. The old world order is rapidly changing and the new one is still undifferentiated. Regardless of our attempts to work harder, be smarter or do things differently the complexity and magnitude of change that is needed to meet the escalating challenges of the future are coming towards us like a runaway freight train. The automatic knee jerk response is to protect our families and ourselves; to take care of "our own". But, this reaction only reinforces the myth of separation that is at the heart of the suffering, despair and habitat destruction that has been growing and threatening all life on this planet. We are all in this together.

We are in the time of what Joanna Macy calls the Great Turning, the shift from our current industrial growth society to a life-sustaining civilization. Our fragile earth can no longer sustain the perpetual growth cycles of our global economic system. We have the tools and resources to transition to a social economic system which supports all life and can lead to a more deeply connected, egalitarian and peaceful world. To be in service to the Great Turning is to overcome our habitual behavior and be in action towards the kind of world we want. But, even more important than that, we need to live the dream now, by focusing our intention on what we want to bring forth in this time of transition. Our thoughts, words and actions need to be aligned with a larger vision, one that encompasses all life. What would our lives look like if we were able to see the light in all people, while acting in service to our common dream of a world that works for the children of all species, for all time? Are not our actions today the most important gift we have to give to our descendants?

"Service is the only possible response to a world in chaos that is
falling apart in every way..."

Organizational Shamanism
I am currently writing a book that integrates my shamanic practices  with three decades of Organizational Development work. Organizational Shamanism (OS) is the practice and application of ancient shamanic techniques to solve contemporary organizational and community challenges. It is a whole systems approach to gathering information that can help us to revitalize and energize the spirit of our organizations and tap into new levels of creativity, intuition and wisdom not available with contemporary perception. OS focuses on transforming inner states of consciousness to bring about outer change, and taps into a creative potential beyond limiting beliefs and assumptions.
I am looking for organizations that are interested in trying these new approaches to solving organizational issues. If you and your organization or any one you know are open to applying this pioneering work in your company to bring about organizational change please give me a call. Or email 530.277.0937 or

The Neuroscience of Self-Transformation through Story
Remapping Your Mind:
By Lewis Mehl-Madrona, MD

Lewis Mehl-Madrona is a brilliant psychiatrist, teacher and author who has been studying traditional healing and healers since his early days and has written about their work and the process of healing.  His primary focus has been upon Cherokee and Lakota traditions, though he has also explored other Plains Cultures and those of Northeastern North America. Lewis has been at the forefront of developing a whole new approach to healing using what he calls Narrative Medicine, based on the ancient teachings of indigenous tribal healing methods.

The non indigenous world is just starting to catch up with the Lakota in recognizing the power of story in the healing process. Lewis has combined these techniques with the latest revelations in neurology to show how our brain patterns and pathways can be rewired through the use of this narrative methodology. He steers his patients away from drugs which often have harmful side affects, and works to deconstruct the stories that are at the root of our pain and suffering and reconstruct more empowering and enlivening ones that nourish us towards wholeness. He has written many books on this subject and I highly recommend this one.

The Pleasure of Serving
by Gabriela Mistral
All of nature is a yearning for service:
The cloud serves, and the wind, and the furrow.

Where there is a tree to plant, you be the one.
Where there is a mistake to undo, let it be you.

You be the one to remove the rock from the field,
The hate from human hearts,
And the difficulties from the problem.

There is joy in being wise and just,
But above all there is the beautiful,
The immense happiness of serving.

How sad the world would be if all was already done.
If there was no rosebush to plant,
No enterprise to undertake.

Do not limit yourself to easy tasks.
It's so beautiful to do what others dodge.

But don't fall prey to the error that only
Great tasks done can be counted as accomplishments.
There are small acts of service that are good ones:
Decoratively setting a table,
Putting some books in order,
Combing a little girl's hair.
That one over there is the one that criticizes,
This other one is the one that destroys.
You be the one that serves.

Serving is not a labor just for inferior beings.
God, who gives fruit and light, serves.
His name could be rendered thus: He Who Serves.

And he has his eyes on our hands,
And he asks us at the close of day:
"Did you render service today? To whom?
To a tree, to your friend, to your mother?"
-Gabriela Mistral

O Divine Mother,
In this extreme danger,
when we and all sentient beings
and nature,
Your glorious body,
face unprecedented misery and destruction,
inaugurate in fierceness and tenderness
the splendor of
Your Age of Passionate Enlightenment.
Bring us into the fire of Your sacred passion for reality,
rejoin the severed mandala of our being,
infuse our bodies, our hearts, our souls, our minds,
with the calm and focused truth of Your highest illumination
that brings each of those things into mutual harmony.
Engender in the ground of all of our beings
the sacred marriage,
that union between masculine and feminine
from which in each of us the Divine Child is born,
that Child that is flesh of Your flesh,
heart of Your heart,
light of Your light,
That Child that is free from all dogma,
free from all shame,
free from all false divisions
between holy and unholy,
sacred and profane,
free to burn out in love,
free to play in love free to serve in love,
as love
for love
In the heart of Your burning ground of life,
Teach us, O Divine Mother, directly
at every moment in this hour of apocalypse
the appropriate action that heals
and preserves
and redeems
and transforms.
