Being a Light in the World

Deep in their roots, all flowers keep the light
Theodore Roethke

As we enter into 2016 I feel called upon to invite us all to step fully into our Divine Purpose in being here at this time in our evolution, and to shine our light as brightly as possible. It is time to remember our own song and sing it out to the world. This is what the planet needs at this time of change and transformation. This is what it means to be human and express our contribution to life, honoring our relationship to the web of life. The luxury of whining and complaining about our circumstances makes no difference. The transformation of our inner world is the only thing that is going to alter the outer world. The year of the universal human is upon us. It is time to let our heart shine light brightly into the universe.

Given people around the world have been celebrating the birth of Jesus, perhaps it is a good time to explore what he has said about light. In the Christian teachings, the Transfiguration is a pivotal moment, and the setting on Mount Hermon is presented as the point where human nature meets God: the meeting place for the temporal and the eternal, with Jesus himself acting as the connecting point, acting as the bridge between heaven and earth. Jesus "was transfigured before them; his face shining as the sun, and his garments became white as the light." We all have the capacity to be that bridge. Jesus said "You are the light of the world." But, what does it mean to be the light?

As we are a reflection of the creator, light is who we are.
There is nowhere to go to experience our radiance.
We just journey within to our true nature.
Sandra Ingerman

Organizational Shamanism
I am currently writing a book that integrates my shamanic practices  with three decades of Organizational Development work. Organizational Shamanism (OS) is the practice and application of ancient shamanic techniques to solve contemporary organizational and community challenges. It is a whole systems approach to gathering information that can help us to revitalize and energize the spirit of our organizations and tap into new levels of creativity, intuition and wisdom not available with contemporary perception. OS focuses on transforming inner states of consciousness to bring about outer change, and taps into a creative potential beyond limiting beliefs and assumptions.
I am looking for organizations that are interested in trying these new approaches to solving organizational issues. If you and your organization or any one you know are open to applying this pioneering work in your company to bring about organizational change please give me a call. Or email 530.277.0937 or

"Light cannot see inside things.
That is what the dark is for:
Minding the interior,
Nurturing the draw of growth
Through places where death
In its own way turns into life.

In the glare of neon times,
Let our eyes not be worn
By surfaces that shine
With hunger made attractive.

That our thoughts may be true light,
Finding their way into words
Which have the weight of shadow
To hold the layers of truth.

That we never place our trust
In minds claimed by empty light,
Where one-sided certainties
Are driven by false desire.

When we look into the heart,
May our eyes have the kindness
And reverence of candlelight.

That the searching of our minds
Be equal to the oblique
Crevices and corners where
The mystery continues to dwell,
Glimmering in fugitive light.

When we are confined inside
The dark house of suffering
That moonlight might find a window.

When we become false and lost
That the severe noon-light
Would cast our shadow clear.

When we love, that dawn-light
Would lighten our feet
Upon the waters.

As we grow old, that twilight
Would illuminate treasure
In the fields of memory.

And when we come to search for God,
Let us first be robed in night,
Put on the mind of morning
To feel the rush of light
Spread slowly inside
The color and stillness
Of a found word."

John O'Donohue, "For Light"

"Last Night As I Was Sleeping"
by Antonio Machado,

"Last night as I was sleeping,
I dreamt - marvelous error! -
that a spring was breaking
out in my heart.
I said: Along which secret aqueduct,
Oh water, are you coming to me,
water of a new life
that I have never drunk?

Last night as I was sleeping,
I dreamt - marvelous error! -
that I had a beehive
here inside my heart.
And the golden bees
were making white combs
and sweet honey
from my old failures.

Last night as I was sleeping,
I dreamt - marvelous error! -
that a fiery sun was giving
light inside my heart.
It was fiery because I felt
warmth as from a hearth,
and sun because it gave light
and brought tears to my eyes.

Last night as I slept,
I dreamt - marvelous error! -
that it was God I had
here inside my heart."
