Living a Shamanic Way of Life

12 steps

Shamanism is a way of life. It reminds us that everything is alive with energy and that we are all connected to and inseparable from a universal web of life.

-Sandra Ingerman

When we teach Medicine for the Earth: How to Transform Personal and Environmental Toxins we talk about living a Shamanic Way of Life. People have been asking me "What does that mean"? So I am dedicating this month's Well of Light Newsletter to exploring twelve key elements that I believe support living a shamanic way of life. Like any practice there will be days when you are fully engaged in all of these steps and others when you only manage to spend a few moments connected to this path. In the end, it's all about love. We must first learn to love and embrace ourselves when we don't do it perfectly. When we love the eternal spirit that lives within ourselves, we learn to love all life, as we are all deeply and profoundly interconnected with the web of life and the Spirit that lives in all things.

Shamanism is the oldest spiritual healing practice on the planet dating back at least 50,000 years. It is a system of Direct Revelation (all the world religions were originally based on this practice). The word shaman means "one who sees in the dark". Shamans enter what is called non-ordinary reality, to access information that is not accessible to the linear mind. While it is useful to have a teacher and outside inspiration, the important thing is to become still enough to hear our inner spirit. The basic principle behind this work is that if we want to change the outer world of form and substance, we must first transmute the inner world of toxic thoughts, beliefs and assumptions into the golden light of loving awareness. We live in a time when the solutions to today's challenges will only be solved by a spiritual awakening on the planet. Without this awakening, future generations (if they survive), will live very challenging lives. Here are some basic practices that can lead us to living in a shamanic way.

Your true home is in the here and the now.

Basic 5Rhythms Immersion Class
Exploring the 5R Energetic Maps of Consciousness
Saturday March 14th 2-4pm @ South Yuba Club

The new 5Rhytms immersion classes are being held from 2-4pm on the second Saturday of the month. This month we will be exploring the maps as they pertain to living an embodied way of life.

5Rhythms is an energetic moving meditation and self-discovery process based on the work of Gabrielle Roth. Dancing the 5Rhythms is a practice-a dynamic way to both workout and to meditate in the same breath. This practice teaches us that life is energy in motion, freeing us from any fixed notions about people, places, objects or ideas. In dancing 5Rhythms the body becomes a spiritual path.

Shamanic Journey and Drumming Circle

6:45-8:45 Thursday Evenings, starts March 12th

We are pleased to announce that we will be starting a Shamanic Journey and Drumming Circle in the beautiful yoga room at Inner Path in Nevada City. This is an opportunity to

discover and internalize the oldest human system of spiritual knowledge and healing on the planet. In this journey practice you will learn through direct revelation, how to live a shamanic way of life. Each week we will drum, dance, sing and travel to the upper, lower and middle worlds to gain insight and heal physical and emotional wounding with the help of Spiritual Guides and Power Animals.

We hope you will join us and engage in these transformational processes, rituals and ceremonies that have been handed down through the wisdom of the ages. This gathering will benefit the experienced shamanic traveler as well as those just beginning on this path of awakening to our true nature as light and love. We will also be working with the Medicine for the Earth material of Sandra Ingerman on healing environmental and inner toxins. This work is based on the ancient alchemical knowledge that we can change the outer world, by transforming our inner landscape.

Organizational Shamanism
I am currently writing a book that integrates my shamanic practices with three decades of Organizational Development work. Organizational Shamanism (OS) is the practice and application of ancient shamanic techniques to solve contemporary organizational and community challenges. It is a whole systems approach to gathering information that can help us to revitalize and energize the spirit of our organizations and tap into new levels of creativity, intuition and wisdom not available with contemporary perception. OS focuses on transforming inner states of consciousness to bring about outer change, and taps into a creative potential beyond limiting beliefs and assumptions.

I am looking for organizations that are interested in trying these new approaches to solving organizational issues. If you and your organization or any one you know are open to applying this pioneering work in your company to bring about organizational change please give me a call. Or email 530.277.0937 or michael@wellofLight.com

The Endless Practice
by Mark Nepo

As a poet, philosopher and beloved teacher, Mark Nepo has been breaking a path of spiritual inquiry for more than thirty years. This new book explores how the soul works in the world, and how by engaging our soul in the world, we are shaped by the endless practice of becoming the person we were born to be. To bring who we are out and to let the world in is a brave and endless practice that clarifies and solidifies the gifts we are born with.

These chapters explore the difficult and rewarding aspects of being human, which are often inter-related, including how to restore our trust in life, when suffering makes us lose our way; how to begin the work of saying yes to life, so it can enliven us; and how to make our inwardness a resource and not a refuge. By unfolding topics such as Exhausting the Struggle, Staying in Relationship, and The Sweet Ache of Being Alive, Nepo continues to reveal how the covenant of being and the practice of becoming strengthen both the inner life of spirit and the outer life of service in the world.

At the heart of each spiritual tradition are the questions: how to be in the world without losing what matters and is living an awakened life is of any use if we don't bring what matters to bear on the world? Though every path offers company and refuge, the journey of every human being is to discover-through their personhood-their own living relationship between the soul and the world, between being and experience, and between love and service. This book helps the reader discover that essential relationship.

Speaking about what led him to this inquiry, Mark says, "I believe and give my heart to the notion that spirituality is listening for and living into the soul's place on Earth. A life of spirit, regardless of the path we choose, begins with a person's acceptance that they are part of something larger than themselves. The want to know who we really are and to know the truth of our existence and our connection to a living Universe is, to me, the fundamental life-giving question that the heart commits to once opened by love or suffering. How we are led and pushed to our true nature is what spirituality and personal growth are all about."

The point of experience is not to escape life but to live it. Each of us carries some wisdom waiting to be discovered at the center of our experience, and everything we meet, if faced and held, reveals a part of that wisdom. The Endless Practice is filled with universal insights and stories woven with guidance and practice, which will bring the reader closer to living their life to the fullest.

Poetry Corner

Native American Prayer

Oh, Great Spirit

Whose voice I hear in the winds,

And whose breath gives life to all the world,

hear me, I am small and weak,

I need your strength and wisdom.

Let me walk in beauty and make my eyes ever behold

the red and purple sunset.

Make my hands respect the things you have

made and my ears sharp to hear your voice.

Make me wise so that I may understand the things

you have taught my people.

Let me learn the lessons you have

hidden in every leaf and rock.

I seek strength, not to be greater than my brother,

but to fight my greatest enemy - myself.

Make me always ready to come to you

with clean hands and straight eyes.

So when life fades, as the fading sunset,

my Spirit may come to you without shame.

-Translated by Lakota Sioux Chief Yellow Lark in 1887

Cherokee Prayer

Let us greet the dawn of a new day

when all can live as one with nature

and peace reigns everywhere.

Oh Great Spirit,  a da nv do, bring to our brothers

the wisdom of Nature and the knowledge

that if her laws are obeyed

this land will again flourish

and grasses and trees will grow as before.

Guide those that through their councils

seek to spread the wisdom of their leaders to all people.

Heal the raw wounds of the earth

and restore to our soul the richness,

which strengthens men's bodies

and makes them wise in their councils.

Bring to all the knowledge that great cities

live only through the bounty

of the good earth beyond their paved streets

and towers of stone and steel.

-Jasper Saunkeah, Cherokee

Lay Yourself Open

When you want to lay yourself open for the divine,

like a snare that is hollowed out to its depth,

like a canopy that projects a shadow

from the divine heat and light

into your soul,

then go into your inner place physically,

or to that story or symbol that reminds you of the sacred.

Close the door of your awareness to

the public person you think yourself to be.

Pray to the parent of creation, with your inner sense,

the outer senses turned within.

Veiling yourself, the mystery may be unveiled through you.

By opening yourself to the flow of the sacred,

somewhere, resounding in some inner form,

the swell of the divine ocean can move through you.

The breathing life of all reveals itself

in the way you live your life.

-Neil Douglas-Klotz
