Embodied Shamanism

Shamans take their bodies with them when they journey.
Sandra Ingerman
People often ask me why I dance? Those
who know me might expect a lengthy response, but I will try to be concise. I dance to deeply feel the emotions that get released when I move, to discover how the shapes of my movements reflect my habitual patterns in the external world. I dance to move into a grounded presence where all my senses are open and alive. I dance to connect with the elements of the natural world and the spirit that moves in all things and I dance to enter what shamans call non-ordinary reality, by moving through the veils that separate the world of the heart from the world of the mind... Ever since I first danced with Gabrielle Roth in 1974 I have been practicing a kind of embodied shamanism.

Now I'm not someone who has always lived in his body. Shortly before my first encounter with Gabrielle my Rolfer, Dub Lee, said to me, "Michael, you're the only person I've ever worked on who doesn't realize he has a body." A bit extreme, but probably true. I experienced a lot of trauma, shock and loss in my early years and had suppressed a lot of emotion. My body was tight, lean, strong and I thought invincible, but numb. It wasn't until I began to move with Gabrielle that feelings began to be released, my intuition and instincts sharpened, and I became conscious of a luminous interior world. Yes, like most shamanic healers, I am a wounded healer, and my wounds have become portals for exploring the infinite spaciousness of the unseen world. When I began studying with Sandra Ingerman ( ) I realized that I had been studying shamanism through dance and movement and it was then that I began to deepen and expand my practice.

Your body is the church where Nature asks to be reverenced.

Honoring Gabrielle Roth on the third anniversary of her passing
Gabrielle made an indelible mark on my soul. I knew from the  day I walked into her dance in 1974  that I had found a home (in my body and the dance) and that my life would never be the same. It was a slow dance  through the years of chaos and turmoil. I know that I am one of countless others that feel blessed,  honored and privileged to have known and loved her... Becoming a 5Rhythms teacher is not only the  best thing I ever did, I can honestly say that it saved my life. Thank you Gabrielle for the wisdom, embodiment  and joy you brought into the world. You are so missed on this day and always...
The videos below are her words about being in a body in this time on planet Earth.

Organizational Shamanism
I am currently writing a book that integrates my shamanic practices  with three decades of Organizational Development work. Organizational Shamanism (OS) is the practice and application of ancient shamanic techniques to solve contemporary organizational and community challenges. It is a whole systems approach to gathering information that can help us to revitalize and energize the spirit of our organizations and tap into new levels of creativity, intuition and wisdom not available with contemporary perception. OS focuses on transforming inner states of consciousness to bring about outer change, and taps into a creative potential beyond limiting beliefs and assumptions.
I am looking for organizations that are interested in trying these new approaches to solving organizational issues. If you and your organization or any one you know are open to applying this pioneering work in your company to bring about organizational change please give me a call. Or email 530.277.0937 or

Why we dance: A Philosophy of Bodily Becoming
By Kimerer Lonthe

This is a book that can change your life by changing the way you view the world. Why We Dance introduces a philosophy of bodily becoming that posits bodily movement as the source and ultimate end of human life. Within this philosophy, dance appears as an activity that humans evolved to do as the enabling condition of their best bodily becoming. Weaving theoretical reflection with accounts of lived experience, this book positions dance as a catalyst in the development of human consciousness, compassion, ritual proclivity, and ecological adaptability. Aligning with trends in new materialism, affect theory, and feminist philosophy, as well as advances in dance and religious studies, this work reveals the vital role dance can play in reversing the trajectory of ecological self-destruction along which human civilization is racing.

If movement is all there is, then how humans move matters. And if how humans move matters, then dance appears as something more than physical exercise or an optional art. Dance appears as a way in which humans learn to participate in the ongoing creation of what is. It appears as a way of cultivating a sensory awareness that can guide humans to create relationships with sources of wonder and sustenance in their lives. And it has always been so.

Wild Geese

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.

Tell me about your despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.

Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting --
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

Mary Oliver

Call Me by My True Names
by Thich Nhat Hanh

Do not say that I'll depart tomorrow
because even today I still arrive.

Look deeply: I arrive in every second
to be a bud on a spring branch,
to be a tiny bird, with wings still fragile,
learning to sing in my new nest,
to be a caterpillar in the heart of a flower,
to be a jewel hiding itself in a stone.

I still arrive, in order to laugh and to cry,
in order to fear and to hope.
The rhythm of my heart is the birth and
death of all that are alive.

I am the mayfly metamorphosing on the surface of the river,
and I am the bird which, when spring comes, arrives in time
to eat the mayfly.

I am the frog swimming happily in the clear pond,
and I am also the grass-snake who, approaching in silence,
feeds itself on the frog.

I am the child in Uganda, all skin and bones,
my legs as thin as bamboo sticks,
and I am the arms merchant, selling deadly weapons to Uganda.

I am the twelve-year-old girl, refugee on a small boat,
who throws herself into the ocean after being raped by a sea pirate,
and I am the pirate, my heart not yet capable of seeing and loving.

I am a member of the politburo, with plenty of power in my hands,
and I am the man who has to pay his "debt of blood" to, my people,
dying slowly in a forced labor camp.

My joy is like spring, so warm it makes flowers bloom in all walks of life.
My pain is like a river of tears, so full it fills the four oceans.

Please call me by my true names,
so I can hear all my cries and laughs at once,
so I can see that my joy and pain are one.

Please call me by my true names,
so I can wake up,
and so the door of my heart can be left open,
the door of compassion.
