November 4, 2016
From the Desk of Mrs. Wise
Happy Friday! We had a great week and the weather was amazing. Students who completed the reading challenge enjoyed the Fall Festival on Monday and all the outside activities. Fourth grade had a great field trip on Thursday and learned a lot about Indiana.

Next week we have two great opportunities for our students to participate in service learning:

Soles4Souls : Cub Scout Pack 396 is collecting shoes for Soles4Souls along with the regional scouting group, Crossroads of America, from Nov. 2nd to Nov. 8th. Soles4Souls is a non-profit group that has collected 2.5 million pair of shoes since 2006. They have given the shoes to people in need in all 50 US states and internationally to 127 countries. The Boy Scout goal is to collect 25,000 pair of shoes from 250 units across America, while Pack 396's goal is to collect 700 pair of gently used or new shoes. Please check your closet for any forgotten or outgrown shoes, be sure to tie the laces together and drop them off in the school office during Nov 2nd - Nov 8th! Learn more about Soles4Souls at www.soles4souls.org

Coin Drive: W e will be doing a coin drive the week of Nov. 7-11. All donations will be going to Connection Pointe to support families in need. W e will be challenging each grade level to donate the most coins. The buckets will be weighed. This year we will weigh 100 pennies and assign that weight to $1.00. That same amount will be calculated for a $5.00 (x5), $10 (x10), etc. The winning grade level will receive a trophy. Students will all receive extra Bulldog tickets or Bulldog Bucks. Thank you for your donations!

Thank you for your support! Have a great weekend! Enjoy the extra hour of sleep!

Body and Personal Safety Program
The school counselor will be conducting body and personal safety lessons with students in grades K-5 starting the week of November 14.  Unfortunately, sexual abuse of children takes place more often than we would like to believe.  Through these lessons, we will provide children the opportunity to learn assertive self-protection skills, differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate touches, and identify people to whom they can go for help. Students in grades K - 3 will learn the appropriate names of male and female private body parts, and anatomically correct dolls will be shown.  All students will participate in the program.  If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Larkey or Mrs. Wise.
Parents, please check the Flyer Folder for important information regarding body safety and how to discuss this topic with your child.

A NOTE FROM THE NURSE

Outdoor recess is a vital part of the school day. It is a time for students to burn off some of that energy they have stored up all morning, get some exercise and socialize with their peers. Now that the weather is getting colder, please remember to send your students to school with cold weather attire. Winter coats, hats, gloves and long pants are most appropriate on these cold days along with shoes or boots and socks. Corporation policy uses a feels-like temperature of 10 degrees or less as the cut off for deciding if recess will be inside or outside. If your child does not have the appropriate winter clothing, please let the school nurse know so that we can help all of our students stay warm during the colder months. Thank you for your assistance and continued support! We are looking forward to a healthy and happy winter season!
