See what's happening at White Lick Elementary
October 7, 2016
From the Desk of Mrs. Wise
Happy Friday! I would like to thank all of the parents for making a special effort to come to school this week and participate in parent-teacher conferences. The school-home partnership is so important to ensure the success of your child. We appreciate your support in helping your child reach his/her greatest potential. If you have not had a chance to meet with your child's teacher, I would like to encourage you to do so. I would also like to thank Sarah Thompson and Abby Rechtin for their help with coordinating our Scholastic Book Fair. They did an amazing job.

Yesterday, Blue from the Indianapolis Colts visited White Lick to share the message "Fuel Up and Play 60." Students learned the importance of eating healthy, being physically active, and being a good friend instead of a bully. I've attached a picture from the event. You can see the students' excitement.

Over fall break, we would like to encourage students to keep their reading muscles sharp. Attached you will find a copy of the Fall Reading Challenge. Those students who complete the reading challenge will be invited to participate in our Fall Festival. There will be a variety of games outside if weather permits!

I want to wish everyone a safe and relaxing fall break. Spend time with your child making special memories. We all know that our children grow up way too fast!   We look forward to seeing everyone on Monday, October 24th!!

Counselor's Corner
Body Safety Parent Preview Night: Tuesday, November 1 from 6:00 - 7:00 at Eagle Elementary (cafeteria)
Parents are invited to attend this meeting to learn about the age-appropriate lessons that will be taught to your children this school year by the elementary school counselors. Unfortunately, recent counts show that sexual abuse of children takes place more often than we would like to believe. As a result, our children need to be taught assertiveness and self-protection skills to prevent such tragedies. This program is presented in a non-threatening, informative way.

Parents, please join us so that you can see the videos and hear about the lessons that will be presented at each grade level. For the lessons we will be using the same videos as last year for all grades with the exception of 4th grade.  A new video will be used this year.

Body and Personal Safety Program
The school counselor will be conducting body and personal safety lessons with students in grades K-5 starting the week of November 14.  Unfortunately, sexual abuse of children takes place more often than we would like to believe.  Through these lessons, we will provide children the opportunity to learn assertive self-protection skills, differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate touches, and identify people to whom they can go for help. Students in grades K - 3 will learn the appropriate names of male and female private body parts, and anatomically correct dolls will be shown.  All students will participate in the program.  If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Larkey or Mrs. Wise.
Parents, please check the Flyer Folder for important information regarding body safety and how to discuss this topic with your child.

BUDDY BENCH UPDATE - Your students may have told you about something new outside near our playground this week! We are happy to announce, the two benches we were collecting plastic caps for last year have arrived and are already being used!!! We worked with Green Tree Plastics LLC in Evansville and their ABC Promise Partnership! The program specifically designed by school children for school children.  It is to be a tool to teach children about caring for the earth and green living. White Lick Elementary students collected over 400 lbs of plastic caps during the 15/16 school year. 400 lbs of caps would fill 10 large 55 gallon trash bags, we had 13 bags!!!! Members of our Go Green Club helped bag many of the caps. Thanks to Mr. Bill Keller (father of our 4/5 High Ability Teacher, Ms. Keller), the caps were taken to Green Tree Plastics and we received two 4ft benches (with backs). The benches are made using 100% recycled plastic. The WLE PTO paid the cost of production and our caps were created into benches that will give our students a place to take a break, make a friend or hang with their favorite WLE teacher! For pictures of our new benches, visit  www.facebook.com/WhiteLickPTO
