The Why Behind The Wine Opener
Meet Justine Komin

Justine, 31, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis when she was 6 months old. She began losing weight and was labeled as 'failure to thrive'. Throughout her life, her parents and her aunts have been a constant source of support. When Justine was listed for transplant, her family did everything they possibly could to support her as she waited for new lungs, as well as, after she received her new pair of perfect lungs in 2010 from her donor, Mason, whose family she has had the opportunity to meet.

Since receiving her new lungs, Justine has been able to run, climb stairs, and shower without getting out of breath - to name a few things. She earned her Master's degree and has been able to work full-time for over a year and a half, carrying her own health insurance for the first time. She has celebrated 7 birthdays, gotten engaged and been able to start planning a wedding. She is grateful for the new life that her donor gave her, but she urges other people living with CF to preserve their lungs as long as possible. She believes that it is never too late to start taking better care of yourself.

"A cure would mean that no one would ever have to do what I've had to do just to stay alive. No parents would have to lose their kids, or siblings, or mom or dad, to this disease. People who are born with CF could still have a normal life expectancy, plan for life's normal milestones, have kids and do the same with them, and experience their milestones."

CFF Attendance at Events
Important Note on Attendance at Foundation Events:
To reduce the risk of getting and spreading germs at CF Foundation-sponsored events, we ask that everyone follow basic best practices by regularly cleaning your hands with soap and water or with an alcohol-based hand gel, covering your cough or sneeze with a tissue or your inner elbow and maintaining a safe 6-foot distance from anyone with a cold or infection.

Medical evidence shows that germs may spread among people with CF through direct and indirect contact, as well as through droplets that travel short distances when a person coughs or sneezes. These germs can lead to worsening symptoms and speed decline in lung function. To further help reduce the risk of cross-infection, the Foundation's attendance policy recommends inviting only one person with CF to an indoor Foundation-sponsored event at a specific time.
