A new day for elephants is on the horizon:         Elephant Refuge North America!

Excitement continues to build for Elephant Refuge North America (ERNA) - our new elephant retirement, rehabilitation and education center!

As we shared with you last month, EAI has located the perfect property in the Southeast U.S., where the land and climate are tailor-made for elephants. ERNA will be an elephant paradise -- 850 acres of lush pastures, dense forests, spring-fed lakes, and soul-reviving privacy.

We can't wait to ink our signatures closing the sale in early November - 41
days away!

As of today, you've helped EAI raise $829,447  towards the $2.4M purchase price of the land.

We must may raise an additional $1,570,553
by November 8 when the sale closes.

Please keep the momentum going!  Together we'll build a new future for captive elephants in the U.S.!

The elephants are counting on us.

Please share our news with everyone you know who cares about the welfare of captive elephants in the U.S.
EAI at Tiger Tops

Foot care workshops
The first-ever Elephant Foot Care Workshops were a sold-out success!

Earlier this month, Tiger Tops Elephant Camp and EAI hosted two enthusiastic groups of volunteers in Nepal, all eager to learn skills vital to the health and wellbeing of elephants.

Carol Buckley instructed students on the "fine art of elephant foot trimming" and, together with Tiger Tops mahouts, highlighted the positive effects of chain-free care on the lives of captive-held elephants.

EAI looks forward to collaborating with Tiger Tops on more workshops in 2017.

Chain-free corrals
The chain-free corrals Carol designed  for Tiger Tops are now nearly six months old and are a huge success.

"I am so pleased to see how well the corrals are being maintained," wrote Carol,  "and how completely the mahouts have embraced the chain free/non-dominance philosophy. They have stopped barking commands at the elephants and no longer use sticks and bullhooks. It's a joy to see how relaxed the elephants and mahouts are today."

Changing culture
In consultation with Carol, Tiger Tops officially ended elephant-back safaris at the same time as going chain-free. Instead of rides, they now offer an exciting opportunity to "walk alongside the elephants" in the jungle. The change to a more elephant-friendly activity has received rave reviews from Tiger Tops guests.

EAI in the News

While Carol was at Tiger Tops, David Clark, a filmmaker with
National Geographic, visited to interview her and document her work with the mahouts and their elephants.  We ' ll keep you posted on broadcast plans.
