It all started about 40 years ago when the Casa De Campo Resort in La Romana, Dominican Republic built a 13 Har-Tru court tennis facility and were in need of ball boys. The local underprivileged children were excited for the opportunity to work and practice their skills at such a prestigious resort and the tennis directors took on a fatherly role to help mentor the children. As time went on and the children honed their skills, they were able to progress from ball boy to hitting partner, then to Junior Pros, which was considered a major accomplishment as they were immediate supervisors to the players and ball boys. Many of the children eventually went on to become tennis professionals at other resorts and tennis facilities worldwide, as well as becoming doctors, lawyers, politicians and businessmen.
In 2016, the former ball boys came together to create the La Romana Ball Boys Tennis Foundation which sets up a mentoring program for ball boys and gives back to their community. Today, the La Romana Ball Boys Tennis Foundation has a total of thirty kids who are being mentored and we are in the process of adding more! Two of our instructors, coach Rene Guerrero and coach Richard Sanchez are proudly part of this foundation and Richard was lucky enough to travel to La Romana, Dominican Republic to celebrate the first anniversary of La Romana Ball Boys Tennis Foundation.
