This issue of Social Working features faculty and staff updates.
Welcome to our Visiting International Scholar!
We are pleased to welcome Elvan ATAMTÜRK as our visiting international scholar this semester. Mr. ATAMTÜRK is a lecturer and co-head of the Department of Social Work at Kocaeli University, where he has been since 2013. From 2007 to 2013 he served as a social worker at the family court. He received a BS from Hacettepe University in 2005, and an MSW in 2010.

Congratulations Chris Costello!
Lecturer Chris Costello, MSW received her Veterinary Social Work certificate last October from the University of Tennessee Knoxville School of Social Work. Congratulations Chris!

Professor Costello has since created an elective in Veterinary Social Work for our MSW program and has helped to establish new field sites in this area for our students.

Dr. Mathbor Delivers Keynote Address
Professor Golam Mathor delivered the keynote address at the International Conference on Social Work and Sustainable Social Development in Bangladesh from January 4, 2018.
Dr. Tawanda Hubbard
Specialist Professor Dr. Tawanda Hubbard recently published an article in the Winter 2017 issue of Reflections : Narratives of Professional Helping entitled " It’s Not All About The Behaviors: Identifying and Addressing Relational Neglect in Adolescence within the Familial Environment."

Dr. Hubbard was also awarded the Pink Heart from her Sisters in Alpha Kappa Alpha at their Founders Day Celebration .

Dr. Michael Cronin and Dr. Shirley Gatenio Gabel (Fordham University) presented information on the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Social Work at a workshop in February at Fordham University School of Social Services. This was a prelude to the theme for this year's Social Work Day at the UN : SDG's, Climate Change and Social Work Practice.
Lecturer Christa Hogan, MSW has been invited to be a content expert for the company, Embodied Labs.  Embodied Labs is a Chicago-based company that develops immersive, interactive, empathy-focused curriculum to create a tool for teaching medical students patient-centered care using virtual-reality technology. They have created a training module for macular degeneration called  We Are Alfred ,  and an Alzheimer's Disease training module called The Beatriz Lab. Christa will be working with them as a content expert on their next project about End of life Experiences.

Adjunct Professor Aubrey Hunt has developed and implemented the new Acute Partial Hospitalization Program at Monmouth Medical Center. 

The program is geared to reduce or prevent hospitalization/re-hospitalization amongst the SMI population. There is a focus on group and individual therapy, as well as medication management. 

Groups include Co-Occurring support, Emotional Regulation, Wellness and Recovery, DBT skills training, CBT techniques and Motivational Interviewing. All interventions are individualized, trauma informed, and patient centered. It has been very successful in stabilizing the population in the community, as opposed to an inpatient setting.
Associate Professor Dr. Elena Mazza has been selected to participate in the Faculty Behavioral Health Curriculum Development Initiative with the National Technical Assistance (TA) Network for Children's Behavioral Health. The purpose of this four-year initiative is to partner with schools of social work throughout the country to improve the knowledge, expertise, and overall preparedness of graduates of MSW programs to provide effective behavioral health services to children, adolescents, and their families.

The program will focus on yearly goals that include: supporting social work faculty members in developing curriculum on children’s behavioral health in year one; incorporating new modules into existing curricula and classes in year two; implementing new modules and gathering feedback from students and social work educators on integration and effectiveness of modules in year three; and evaluating the effectiveness of modules in the fourth and final year.
