Administrative Address
Welcome to April! Spring is in the air. These are days when warm weather intermingles with spring snow, exciting cumulative projects coincide with state testing, and excess energy consorts with perseverance. The school year is flying by, but it has much learning in it yet. We have the opportunity to encourage our students to practice the habit of patience. We have the opportunity in the next seven weeks to help our children experience the inconvenience of delayed gratification in a positive way. Though this runs counter to much of the drive of modernity, it runs in line with education and character building, two of AVA’s pillars.

At Aspen View Academy, we share a goal of helping our students learn and grow, both of which take time and effort, even struggle. Such learning and growth inhabit all nine and a half months of the school year. In his New York Times article “The Tyranny of Convenience,” Tim Wu opines: “We must never forget the joy of doing something slow and something difficult, the satisfaction of not doing what is easiest.” It seems that such joy is learned through experience, and the experience of finishing strong is an ideal means of tasting this joy.

Professor Wu continues, "Today’s cult of convenience fails to acknowledge that difficulty is a constitutive feature of the human experience. Convenience is all destination and no journey. But climbing a mountain is different from taking the tram to the top, even if you end up at the same place. We are becoming a people who care mainly or only about outcomes. We are at risk of making most of our life experiences a series of trolley rides."

While outcomes are important to us, we care about the climb, the process. After all, outcomes, destinations don’t build grit, resilience, determination, or resolve. It is the process, the journey, the days of April, one day in succession of another, that builds these in us. Aren’t you glad that we get to resist the “tyranny of convenience” as a community? It isn’t easy, but it is worth it for our children.

Day by day~

This is a reminder that all adults entering the building between the hours of 7:30am-3:45pm must have their drivers license or government issued ID each time. We will no longer use the key fobs. While the key fobs can be more convenient, we have learned they may not be the most secure. Please contact the front office if you have any questions.

A big AVA thank you to the families that donated to feed our Student Senators. As a reminder, we will continue to ask for donated lunch items for weekly Friday meetings.

The AVA Foundation will be partnering with the Student Senate as we wrap up this year and plan for next year.
The AVA Foundation would like to thank Andrea Kluppel, Foundation Secretary, for her commitment over the past 14 months. It is because of volunteers like Andrea and the organization she provided, that the AVA Foundation is able to deliver fun and engaging events for our community and children.
