As we come to the final weeks of the 2017-18 school year, pausing and recognizing progress and celebrating success is a priority. What skills, understanding, or habits do our children have now that were a struggle just nine short months ago? Can they tie their shoes and make their beds all by themselves? Can they read a novel and develop a well-written paragraph? Do they make their own lunch or load their backpack before bedtime daily? This is progress. Progress can also be captured through unit assessments, i-Ready diagnostics, and even the awards to our Latin students who performed above the national average on the National Latin Exam. A student's ability to restate the question in an answer that evidences depth and breadth of understanding is progress. The ability to prioritize and complete homework is a sign of growing maturity. What about responding to sibling conflict with a willingness to hear another's perspective? That too is growth.

With growth, we also value celebrating success. It is important to recognize and celebrate all the successes, both big and small, that your child has had over the course of this year. Your child has built their character and embraced the positive and welcoming culture at AVA. They are truly growing into being the world’s future leaders. Take the time to celebrate and share one or two of the successes with a friend, a staff member, and, of course, share the progress you see with your child. It is good to remind each other of the struggle toward the ease. Celebrate progress. After all, the years fly by, even those filled with days that seem long.

Enjoy considering and celebrating all the ways your child has grown.

Elementary Field Day

Field day is going to look a little different this year. We wanted to give our kids and teachers the opportunity to slow down, really enjoy every station offered, and celebrate the end of the year. We will be having TWO field day events this year. There will also be a concessions table/fundraiser where students will be able to purchase snacks and drinks. Students may wear athletic shorts and any AVA t-shirt or uniform shirt on their field day. Shorts should be at least finger-tip length.

  • Kindergarten-2nd grade will be on May 23rd from 9am-Noon.
  • 3rd-5th grade will be on May 22nd, from 9:00-3:00.

K-1st grade students will be expected to bring a sack lunch the day of their event. If they would like to purchase any snacks from the concessions table, they should also bring cash.

2nd grade is the only grade that will have their lunch at their normal time, so they can bring a sack lunch or purchase from the cafeteria. If they would like to purchase any snacks from the concessions table/fund raiser, they should also bring cash.

3rd-5th grade students will be expected to bring a sack lunch the day of their event. If they would like to purchase any snacks from the concessions table/fund raiser, they should also bring cash.

Please make sure all sack lunches are nut free and can last the day outside in the shade before your child gets to them.

All students should bring plenty of water, hats, and sunscreen to last the day outside.

Middle school students will be running the majority of the stations, but there are still things we need parent assistance for! We are also in need of some easy up tents to provide shade. If you able to help, please sign up here.

For questions, please email Ms. Damm or Mrs. Alguire

Baseball

Baseball makes the dust shine in the light of the sun
The batter is nervous but calm
The coach called out because he hit a home run
The bat is like a metal pipe waiting for a bomb
The field is waiting to see the game today
The crowd is filled with joy
It is a clear crisp day in May
The win is relying on the boy
