Student & Staff Spotlight

Dakota enrolled at Pathway in January 2014. Over the past 4 years, he has shown significant growth in all areas and most notably in his communication skills. Dakota recently impressed his history teacher by leading a class discussion on nuclear weapons. He selected the article to read to the class and composed 5 critical thinking questions to prompt a group discussion. Dakota was respectful of the opinions of others and his questions prompted a lively conversation.
Dakota is active in student council and in January suggested the group campaign to collect clothing for a homeless shelter, where he and his mother volunteer. The drive was a huge success!
Under the direction of the Career Education Program, Dakota has been working in the food services department at Einstein Hospital since September. His responsibilities include making sandwiches and salads and plating desserts. He reports to work on time, with proper attire in place. The kitchen staff welcomed Dakota, making him truly feel part of the team.
Congratulations on your accomplishments, Dakota. We are all so proud of you!

Ms. Harper began her career at Pathway in September of 1991 as a counselor in the residential program. She worked with older students in the Thomas Jefferson Building when it housed 16-18 boys. Her work day would have included educational, recreational and life skill development for the boys in this building which looked very different than today’s Thomas Jefferson (TJ). At that time, the boys’ bedrooms were in the OT and Speech Departments’ areas and the school cafeteria was located in the space where current offices for Transition Services and Career Education are located. Ms. Harper’s sense of humor was valued, especially in the early morning, when 18 boys were getting ready for school. Her genuine interest in their success was appreciated and helped many to gain the confidence needed to tackle life challenges.
Ms. Harper's career goals shifted to include a degree in Special Education and her dedication to The Pathway School continued. Instead of having teachable moments, while helping boys to prepare the evening meal, she has the pleasure of using History to help students learn from past events and to develop insight into lives well lived. Her passion for the environment has led students to participate in recycling efforts. Her support for Student Council has encouraged many students to take a leadership role and to value community service. Toys for Tots, a Thanksgiving dinner distribution, fundraiser for St. Jude and a current pretzel fundraiser for Pathway’s prom are some of the projects that Student Council (and Ms. Harper) can count as achievements for the year.
In her 27
th
year at The Pathway school, she is one who alums remember as being a substantial reason for their success and who today will quietly continue to be a significant and positive influence in our students’ lives.

NBC10 Covers Pathway’s Pep Rally – Go Eagles!
In anticipation of the Eagles Super Bowl win, Pathway held a pep rally on February 1
st
with NBC10 coverage. Students took to the stage to offer their unique Eagles cheers, with many wearing the infamous underdog masks.
It was a great opportunity for everyone to get together, have fun and participate in the excitement leading up to the big game. The clip was aired that evening during the 4:00 p.m. news segment.
A big “THANK YOU” goes out to Pathway teacher, Jenifer Green for contacting the station and inviting them to attend and film the event. The media coverage and subsequent Eagles win, made this pep rally one to remember!

Pathway Celebrates Literacy
Read Across America
is an annual reading motivation and awareness program, promoted and created by the National Education Association, calling for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of children's author Dr. Seuss. Pathway extends this reading awareness for an entire week. Between February 26
th
and March 2
nd
20 guests from the community visited Pathway to read to the students and share information about themselves. Participants included a banker, business owner, restaurant manager, hot air balloon pilot, pastor, township official, AMTRAK employee, sports broadcaster, Homewood Suites mascot, Lewis the Duck and others!
These guests gave of themselves: the gift of their time. It was evident our readers enjoyed the students as much as the students enjoyed them!

The NED Show Comes to Pathway
The NED Show is an elementary school assembly program promoting positive attitudes, better behavior & academic achievement. On February 5
th
, Alex, from the NED Show entertained and shared motivation and good lessons to a full audience of Pathway students and faculty. NED is a loveable cartoon character whose name is an acronym for “
Never give up, Encourage others
,
and
Do your best”
. The focus of the assembly was to promote a culture of kindness and excellence.
Alex shared stories and examples through the “adventures of NED” that touched upon making good choices, having the right attitude, encouraging others, developing goals, taking responsibility, believing in one’s self and being a champion. The students enjoyed Alex’s witty humor and fully participated in the 45 minute assembly.
The show has had performances in every state, and has toured internationally in Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. Each year they perform in nearly 5,500 schools and encourage nearly 2.5 million kids worldwide.

Danny’s Barbershop is Pathway’s Newest Work Site
When Career Education Supervisor, Kay Drevanko, was introduced to Danny Torres and learned about his barber shop in downtown Bridgeport, she did not hesitate to ask if he would be interested in partnering with Pathway as a student work site.
Danny was happy to get involved and in February, John Patterson began working at Danny’s one afternoon a week. John helps out by doing tasks such as folding laundry, replenishing snacks, sweeping/cleaning, etc.
Danny and his staff have been so welcoming to John and given his outgoing personality, he fits right in! John has indicated he may consider being a barber one day, but for now he is learning first-hand what it takes to run this type of business and is enjoying every minute!
This kind of experiential learning is invaluable and we are so grateful for Danny’s Barbershop and our other community partners that have embraced these opportunities with our students.

Pathway Student Art Exhibited in a Juried Show at Montgomery County Community College’s Fine Arts Center
Pathway art teacher, Shari Donath was so inspired by Alan Duck’s artistic talent, she encouraged him to submit his most recent piece for exhibit at MONTCO’s Fine Arts Center. “I see Alan as a true American Folk artist. His work is all done first in pipe cleaners, then he tapes thin paper on top and paints each piece. When I look at the pieces, the anatomy that he creates really shows the character and musculature of that animal. He is truly one of the most inventive artists I have ever worked with here. And, I have never seen this approach to art before
.”
Congratulations Alan! We cannot wait to see more of your unique artistic talent!
