August 2018
Message from Pastor Kim
Dear Friends,

It will be good to gather for worship this Sunday after our children "Dive In” to Fall Sunday school during Rally Sunday festivities! During worship we will have the privilege of presenting new Bibles to our third graders and we will continue the sermon series, “Transitions."

No doubt you have already noticed a transition in the format for the weekly update. With this new way of sharing information on a weekly basis, we have decided that we will no longer also send a monthly newsletter. Don’t worry, there will be a way for you to see all of the fun pictures that are typically included in the newsletter in the weekly update. Person-to-Person will also be available once each month as well.

Rather than having one opportunity a month to have articles included in the newsletter, information sent to Jerry Blackwell at [email protected]  by midweek will go in the update sent later that week. There may be a few adjustments that need to be made along the way with this new way of communicating, so I ask for your patience. Don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns. In the meantime let’s offer a great big thank you to Mary Kunce and Jerry Blackwell for working together to make this change happen. And let’s offer an even bigger thank you to Jerry and Shay Blackwell for years and years of faithful ministry in preparing the monthly Maplewood UMC Messenger.

I am confident that you will enjoy reading about all the ways you can be part of the life and ministry of Maplewood UMC in this new format of the weekly update.

See you Sunday!

God’s grace and peace be with you,

Pastor Kim

DIVE right on IN
Rally Sunday August 19
at 9:45 a.m.
For children from pre-school through 6th Grade (and your parents) Breakfast will be served! While the children have the chance to meet their Sunday school teachers and “Dive In” to some really cool water games, parents will be asked to complete registration forms for this Sunday school year.

Today is the day to wear your flip flops and clothes that can get wet! It’s going to be a great way to begin a new year of Sunday school! Invite your friends!

Another way to “dive in” on the 19th
… children in third grade (and those who are older who have not received a Bible) will be given new Bibles during worship.

Please let Pastor Kim know by email ([email protected]) or text message (314-651-9999) the names of any third grade (or older) children who would like to receive a Bible on this Sunday. They will be having more and more opportunities to ‘dive into’ the Word, in their classes and on their own.
A GriefShare group led by Steve and Lis Wall-Smith meets each Saturday from 10:00am-11:30am, beginning September 15th.
GriefShare is a 13-week program of structured conversations, reflections, and mutual support for those who have lost loved ones of any age and at any time in their lives. While the GriefShare curriculum is Christ-centered, the group is open to anyone. Please invite those you know from outside MUMC to join us — friends, family, co-workers. ...Child care and materials will be available at no cost, but registration is important so we can ensure enough materials and childcare are available.
To get more information or register for the group call Steve and Lis Wall-Smith (314-369-7952). You may also register by going to through the GriefShare.org website.
“A Disciple’s Path” is a small group which will begin on Tuesday, October 2.
Pastor Kim will lead this 6-week study which explores in depth the practices we commit to as members of a local United Methodist Congregation...to support the congregation with our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service, and our witness. These practices create “a disciple’s path” which helps us grow and mature as disciples of Jesus. The small group meeting will last between 60 and 90 minutes. Between group meetings participants are encouraged to engage in 20 – 30 minutes of daily reading, prayer, and reflection exercises which are provided in the study materials. If you are interested in taking part in this study,it is important to be part of an introductory/information session. Introductory sessions will be held on Sunday, September 23 at 9:45 a.m. and Tuesday, September 25 at 7 p.m. The same information will be shared at both introductory sessions. Please choose the time that works best for you.  If you are interested in taking part in this small group study or have questions, please contact Pastor Kim at  314-651-9999  or  [email protected] .
