The Sermon Title: The Lord is Near
Rev. Harriet J. Bryan
The Gospel: Philippians 4: 1-9

Points to Ponder:
"When I dwell in you, I do so in the present--I live in the present...I do not dwell in the future you visualize or imagine....your imagination of the future, which is almost always dictated by fear of some kind, rarely, if ever, pictures me there with you."
--words attributed to Jesus in William Young's The Shack

The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.”
-- William James, American psychologist and philosopher

GENEROUS LIVING FORUM
Early last spring, at the urging of the Finance Committee, a few of us started an informal, ad hoc Stewardship Committee to begin thinking, and praying, and talking about Christian Stewardship. By our second meeting, it was apparent we didn't want to only be about giving money to the church, although that is certainly important. We didn't even want to only talk about other ways we give to the church through our time and gifts and talents. We wanted to somehow couch the conversation in terms that reflected the mutual benefits of really belonging to a community that supports us as we support it; that giving to the church ought to be more of a natural extension of the rest of our lives and less like another obligation we are expected to meet. So, our Stewardship Committee now thinks of itself more as a Generous Living Forum . We see our purpose as promoting a culture of Christian Stewardship; encouraging our congregation to live generously through their prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness as disciples of Jesus Christ.

We are now searching for examples of Generous Living - searching for how to show Christ's love in ways large and small; through our thoughts, words, and deeds; to family, friends, and strangers; intentionally, until it becomes our nature; and, individually until it becomes our culture. Obviously, this is too much for any of "us" and sharing the conversation is the intent of any Forum. We would like to encourage each of you to think of examples of how generous living has enriched your life; both those times the generosity of others helped you AND how your own living generously has impacted your life in a positive way. We suspect most of you will be uncomfortable sharing even within small groups but we can all share our experiences silently in personal prayers. For the benefit of others, we would love for you to share your experiences with the whole congregation through The Street Scene or especially as a brief witness in worship service. Jot them down, or write them up formally, and send them to Lisa Martin or me, Hugh Hatcher.

We look forward to growing a culture of Christian stewardship at Madison Street UMC!
