The tables are turned on Dr. Richard Grossman!
The Volunteers in Medicine Dental Clinic recently visited a daycare as part of the Healthy Smiles Program. Dr. Grossman finished his evaluations and to his surprise this precious little girl looked at him and said “ now I check you”. Priceless!
The Healthy Smiles program allows VIM dental staff and volunteers to visit daycare facilities and other nonprofits to ensure the children are educated on proper brushing techniques and good oral health.

Dr. Euguene Lucas, Receives the 2017 AANP NP State Award for Excellence Representing Pennsylvania
Eugene Lucas, DNP, CRNP, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC received the 2017 AANP NP State Award for Excellence representing Pennsylvania this past month. Dr. Eugene Lucas holds a
doctorate degree from Wilkes University and is masters prepared and nationally board certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. He is an Assistant Professor and the Coordinator of the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) program in the Passan School of Nursing at Wilkes University and a direct care provider of behavioral health services in various clinical settings.
Highlights of Dr. Lucas’s achievements for this award include:
- Serving as a dedicated volunteer at Volunteers in Medicine, Luzerne County, a free medical and dental clinical for the working uninsured, where he increases access for patients to behavioral health services in a newly established integrated behavioral health center at the clinic.
- Being an advocate to the Care for PA campaign for nurse practitioner (NP) full practice authority. He was recently recognized as a top NP recruiter of new membership to PCNP the state wide advocacy organization for NPs in PA. Dr. Lucas is a member of the Nurse Practitioners of NEPA.
- Mentoring the next generation of PMHNP students to clinical excellence as the Coordinator of the PMHNP program at Wilkes University. His students achieved a 100% national board certification pass rate this past academic year.
Dr. Lucas exemplifies professionalism, and is a compassionate NP provider who silently and humbly makes a difference in the daily lives of his patients. Dr. Lucas demonstrates excellence in NP clinical practice and is a proven leader and mentor in his many NP roles.
Dr. Lucas will be recognized for his award
June, 2017 at the Salute to the States event at the 2017 AANP National Conference in Philadelphia, PA.

Welcome Back Maureen!
Volunteers in Medicine is happy to announce the return of Maureen Harrison to the area.
Maureen had retired to a community in New York approximately one year ago and missed being part of Northeastern PA. Once she returned to Luzerne County and settled into her new apartment in the Dallas area, she revisited the clinic to once again volunteer.
We are proud to have her back and Annette Miskiewicz, Chief Receptionist, has graciously offered to train Maureen on the new electronic medical record system .

Resources Available for Patients with Diabetes and High Blood Pressure
Glucose Monitoring Test Strips Available
VIM recently purchased a large quantity of GE blood glucose monitoring test strips which are available for distribution to patients. They can be found in the medicine closet next to the vaccine “station” in the middle shelving unit. Please only distribute 1 vial of strips at a time so that all patients can take advantage of the free strips. The strips go with the GE glucose meter available for free from Price Chopper.

Pen Needles
Price Chopper is offering free Pen Needles as a part of the diabetic program. The needles included as a part of the program are UniFine Pen Needles available in 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 8mm, and 12mm.

Blood Pressure Monitoring
VIM is proud to announce partnership with Bedwick's Pharmacy and Gifts. Bedwick's has agreed to offer automatic blood pressure cuffs at a cost of $18 for patients who would benefit from home testing of their blood pressure.

Winter Board Meeting
Volunteers in Medicine recently held its End of Year Board Meeting on December 7th at the clinic. Three new members were warmly welcomed, Dr. Gerald Maloney, Chief Medical Officer Geisinger Northeast, Lynn McCarthy, Pharmacist, and Dr. Doug Coslett, Chief Medical Officer at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. It is an honor to have these individuals join the team of our present governing body. We look forward to their expertise as health care professionals.
The Annual Board Meeting is scheduled on January 25, 2017 at the East Mountain Inn/Holiday Inn in Wilkes-Barre. Please mark your calendar and watch for the invitation in the mail.
