Meet our newest Board Member

On February 20th, Patrick Zerby was sworn in as a member of our Board of Education, replacing Kevin Snarr.  Mr. Zerby is serving his first term as a member of the Wilmington City Schools Board of Education after serving 33 years in the United States Air Force.

Zerby believes that a strong district academic report card coupled with formidable athletic and extra-curricular programs inspires community involvement and stimulates area growth.  He also believes that the security, safety and overall welfare of the students and staff are paramount to establish an environment conducive to learning.  His goal while serving on the board is to focus on student achievement and implement/enforce policies that will ensure success for all students.

Levy Renewal:  Facts & Figures

Each year our public schools are tasked with providing a substantial and increasing list of services. WCS, through strategic planning, has operated with the same percentage of income tax revenue since January 2003. This School District Income Tax makes up 15% of total operating revenue.

The WCS Board of Education will be placing a Renewal Levy on the May 2nd ballot. This is NOT a new tax and will not increase your taxes.

For more facts and figures about our district finances, we encourage you to visit our Levy Fact page on our WCS District website.

The Wilmington Schools Foundation provides an opportunity for Alumni, friends, corporations, and foundations to charitably support Wilmington City Schools to enhance the education environment of students, faculty, and staff.

In 1988, the WSF was established so that monies raised could be used to further public education programs that cannot be funded through the regular school budget. Since its establishment, the WSF has supported the educational experience through grants, scholarships, and special programs. The foundation works directly with the school system, but is the independent, non-profit entity of WCS.

WSF's Grant Program provides the opportunity for applicants to receive funding for creative and impactful ideas for classrooms and for the educational environment of students, faculty and staff. For the school year of 2016-2017, the Foundation was able to award 27 grants for a total of $27,203.00.

Every Elementary student gets to attend an out of school field trip, thanks to a foundation grant. Some examples of other grants given this year are alternative seating, after school book clubs, chrome books to the 3 elementaries, science lab supplies, and art field trips. These grants are largely made possible by the Annual Gift Campaign. The Gift Campaign is held for the month of October. This year Wilmington City School's pledged $13,700.

Excellence in Teaching Awards , established by the WHS Class of 1945, are presented each year in honor of former teachers, Esther and Woodrow Williams. They recognize teachers in the district who exemplify enthusiasm, dedication, preparation, and inspiration. This year those teachers will be awarded in May.

The WSF currently offers 8 scholarships to graduating seniors.
