Everything you need to know about picking up your CSA box!
This is a very important Newsletter!
Please take time to read through it
so that you are prepared for a successful CSA pick up.

Week 1 (A week)
June 12th, 2014
Remember any biweekly deliveries have been divided into Groups A and B; make sure you know when your group starts
Let the veggies begin!

LotFotL in the Quick! Below are the highlights that we would like to make sure our members know about on the farm.

Delivery Details:  All weekly subscriptions begin on June 12th. All bi-weekly deliveries should have already gotten an email about how biweekly shares work.  If you did not and you are confused please contact us.  See the schedule calendar below for details on when you need to pick up.

Tote sizes: Each Site has 2 different sized totes.  Make sure you know which one you are supposed to be taking. (Staple and Flipflop are SMALL, Gonzo and Seesaw are LARGE)

Sign into your account:  Learn how to sign into your account.  It has details like what share you signed up for, your site contact information, pick up hours, and farm store access.

SWAP boxes:  SWAP boxes will be at eligible sites.  They are in large Blue bins (not totes like the CSA boxes come in).  Use this bin to get rid of something you won't use in exchange for something you will.

Chicken and Egg Shares: Chickens and eggs are delivered in Portable Coolers and will be located next to the shares.  If we sent eggs or chickens for you they will be listed after your name on the check off sheet.  These items will not have your name on them, just find your name on the list and check them off. (Please, NEVER, take anything if it is not listed after your name).

Vacation Requests: If you need to put your share on hold, please do so by Tuesdays at 11 pm on the week of delivery.  At that same time, you will be able to schedule a "double box" AKA make up- box, that will be delivered on a later date.

Forgotten Shares: Unclaimed food is not brought back to the farm, it is donated.  Please set alarms and write notes to help yourself remember to pick up your share.  The farm is not in a position to replace forgotten shares.  You can also find your site's contact information on your account page.  I encourage people to call their site if you do forget, sometimes you get lucky and your share can be saved.

Farm Store Open:
Our farm store is open! Each week can be different so visit often.  Place your order by Tuesday evening to receive delivery at a drop off point of your choice on Thursday.
If you order items from the farm store, find them listed after your name on the check list and locate your items in the portable beach cooler near the totes.  Never take anything if it is not listed after your name.

Vacations

The 2014 vacation policy looks to be a great fit. You can schedule your box on hold when you are gone and reschedule your make-up box to be delivered at a later date.
  1. Begin by logging into your account
  2. Click 'holds' at the bottom of the yellow menu
  3. Click 'schedule' a new vacation.
  4. The 'starting week' should begin the Tuesday before the first delivery you'll miss.
  5. Select the number of deliveries you'll miss in the 'number of weeks' menu.
  6. The 'double box week' allows you to select the week you'll be able to pick up your replacement share. If you missed more than one share delivery you'll be able to schedule multiple double boxes.

NOTE: Biweekly members can schedule to pick up their make up box (aka double box) on an off-week, preventing the need for a double box on a regularly scheduled delivery week. (No credits or cash refunds are issued for unscheduled make-up boxes.)

Braising Mix

The Braising Mix contains arugula, broccoli rabe, tatsoi, and dandelion greens.  These greens are great for cooking.  It also allowed us to share your arugula and tatsoi that, although fine for cooking, got a little bit more flea beetle damage than we liked.  This damage does not make the greens unsafe or untasty, but it is not very pretty after it has been chewed on by these hungry little buggers. By mixing it with other greens we got a much more attractive product that can be thrown into soup, sauteed as a side dish, mixed with eggs, or thrown into your favorite ferment (like sauerkraut or kimchi).

How to Pick up CSA items.

(Make sure that you can view this image) SMALL totes are Staple and Flipflop Shares, and LARGE are Gonzo and Seesaw Shares.
Blue Bin is SWAP box
Place all of your online farm store orders by Tuesday at 11 pm the week of pick up.
    1. Find and check off your name on the Roster Sheet, only taking what is listed after your name.
    2. Find your box size (Large for Seesaw and Gonzo and Small for Staple and Flipflop shares)  NOTE: Boxes will not have your name on them, so you need to know what size to take.
    3. Transfer the contents into your reusable bag. (We do leave some plastic bags for anyone that forgets their bag)
    4. Please neatly stack all of the empty bins together so they're nesting inside each other.
    5. Chicken and Egg shares, as well as farm store items, will be located in the portable cooler.

Enjoy your farm fresh, local food. Please call the farm if you have any questions or concerns. 920-318-3800

NOTE:  If it is not listed after you name, please don't take it, even if you are sure that you should be getting it.  Please call the farm so that we know that something isn't quite right.  We will take care of you and get you your food, we promise!

SWAP Boxes

Drop sites that qualify for SWAP boxes will have an 18 gallon Blue Bin that contains veggies that are eligible for trade.  Remove an item from your CSA box that you don't think you will eat and trade it for something in the SWAP box that looks more appealing!

Best Practices for Members

  1. Only take what is listed after your name on the check list.  If something is not there, it is best to call the farm so that we can figure out what went wrong and fix it.
  2. Call right away if something isn't right. We cannot fix it if we don't know about it. The sooner we know the higher your chance of getting optimum results.
  3. Consult your member account or the FAQ page on our website.  Your farmer needs to have time to grow your food.  You can help by taking a minute to see if you can find information on your account page or our website.  We are always happy to help, but it stings a little to get a question that you know is right on the member's account page.
  4. Send helpers prepared. If you are having someone else pick up your box, make sure to give them all the information that they need. It is fine to ask them to do it, but make sure they know the size of the box they need and to check off on the roster sheet.
  5. Set an Alarm. We all get busy and no one wants to miss out on their food.  Remember, unclaimed food is NOT returned to the farm, but donated at the end of the day on Thursday.  Setting and alarm or using post it note reminders helps you to make sure your box gets picked up.

Drop Site Details

Most of our sites are set up to be self serve.  Here are specific pick up details about your locations.

ALWAYS CHECK THE ROSTER SHEET FOR YOUR NAME!

Remember, boxes don't have your name on them, so make sure you know what size box to take.

(Gonzo and Seesaw are LARGE totes and Staple and Flipflop are SMALL totes).

The Dirt on the Farm!

Most weeks you will get a fun farm story, field report, or other information to help you feel more connected to your farm and farmers. This week, we have given you a lot of other information to keep track of so we are going to keep this section good and short.

In the next couple of weeks you can expect to see items like; kale, chard, sorrel, dandelion greens, lettuce, spinach, bok choy, mizuna, radishes, and napa cabbage showing up your shares.  This is the time of year for greens.  Planning meals like salads, stir fries, and soups will be a sure bet.

Things you may want to stock up on and have on hand in your cupboard are; rice, chicken and/or veggie stock, eggs, canned or dried beans, salad dressings, other veggies to complement your salad friendly veggies.  I like to have things like seeds, nuts, and dried fruit to add to my salads. These early veggies go well with Asian cooking as well, so condiments like rice wine vinegar, hot sauce, and soy sauce are good to have around.

CSA helps bring out the creative culinary artist in our members.  One of my favorite cook books to help me be creative is Farm-Fresh & Fast, put out by the FairShare Coalition. We also love to hear what you have done.  Feel free to send recipes and pictures of your creations via email or Facebook.  Happy eating.

As always, thank you for your support this year.  Make sure to contact us if you have any questions.
