Triangle Speech Services is the private, professional practice of Judith L. Bergman, a licensed speech-language pathologist (SLP) who specializes in foreign accent and regional dialect modification and related communication skills. I offer customized, individual tutorials to corporate-sponsored and self-enrolled individuals who speak English fluently but with moderate to severe accents that create challenges and frustrations in the workplace.

We had two possible "eye-catching" titles for this issue with the hope that new readers would be curious enough to open the email. The other title was "Confidence Comes From Success, Not Pep-Talks."  Both really point to the same thing: If a training program, such as accent modification, really works, the results will be demonstrated.  When a client experiences himself or herself as being understood the first time most of the time, when he is not asked to repeat or rephrase, he or she is experiencing success as a speaker of "listener friendly" English.  Each concrete experience of success builds more confidence and the speaker begins to participate more readily in meetings and networking conversations, has more success, builds more confidence.

"Pep talks" i.e. encouragement by the instructor, should help the client understand the learning process, the need for patient and persistent practice and constructive feedback.

Listen and Decide for Yourself

E.P. is an Attorney from Venezuela, and her native language is Spanish. If you click on this link to Sound Cloud  you will hear her reading the "Rockefeller Passage" from the Compton Pronouncing English as a Second Language Pretest (Roc-Pre 2) and then reading the same passage during her post test (Roc-Post 8).  The numbers are just my way of ordering the multiple sound files to enable transcription. The sound link will not work in Safari but does in Firefox and other browsers.

You can move back and forth and compare specific parts of the reading passage and then decide for yourself if "the proof of the pudding is in the eating."

Feedback from E.P.and other clients who have recently completed their accent modification training:
E.P. wrote on her PESL Client Feedback and Evaluation form: "This program has helped me a lot! I can speak more clearly and confidently. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to reduce their accent for working purposes or self-improvement."

We received this note from N.D., a physician from Brazil (native language Portuguese): "I'd like to thank you very much for the great course and fantastic teaching you have provided to me. It has already made a difference in my confidence level and it will continue to impact on my life. Gracie mille!

M.M., an Industrial Engineer from Venezuela, wrote this on her feedback form: "This program has been life-changing for me. I am more confident talking to others. My self-esteem has grown.  When I first started I was feeling skeptical about improving my English pronunciation. Knowing that I was pronouncing so badly was kind of shocking. Becoming aware of the different sounds and using the tools of the program helped me to feel confident again. I learned strategies to use in my day-to-day conversation."
